Mental Break Ideas

For those who need a mental break or just need to step away for a bit, here are some tips/ideas to help you.

1. Go re-read your favorite book.

2. Watch a favorite movie or tv show, something that makes you smile and laugh.

3. Bake something.  Screw calories today, if you’re needing something sweet to help you chill and relax for a bit, DO IT!

4. Play a game that is fun or relaxing for you.  This is a game that is about bunnies and snow that I always find super relaxing.

5. Draw something, even if it’s just a kitten playing with yarn, go with what makes you happy.

6. Go write a story idea you’ve been wanting to work on. Even if you end up tossing it out later, who cares if  it will at least distract you a bit.

7. Listen to your favorite playlist of music and dance to it if that makes you feel better.

8. Cuddle and play with your pet if you have one.

9. Go into a quiet room and just focussing on deep breathing. Here’s a video to help if need be. 

10. Lots of people didn’t sleep well last night so if you’re needing a nap go and take one.

I know it’s frustrating and depressing, but you can’t lose hope and we all need to take care of ourselves first before we can try that again.  So, take care of yourselves everyone!

She said she was going to a get together with her friends, a "wine & whine"... But she stayed out all night. Not even a 'hey I'm safe' text or call. She avoids opportunities to be intimate, often pulling away or awkwardly changing the subject. She is disconnected and not in tune with my emotions, especially my frustrations with her. "What's wrong?" Is her favorite line, knowing damn well the problem is her. She says she feels like she is asexual now, When I ask why we never have sex or why she feels so distant from me... "I'm sorry I'm so fucked up", "I'm trying"... But I've seen the anonymous Craigslist posts and the emails with her potential hookups. I've seen and heard the sexual things she talks about with her friends in person and online. I see the way she looks at other people. So how is it not me? I try to leave. She breaks down and tells me not to. You. Can't. Have. Your. Cake. I'm starting to resent her because I'm better than this! I am not her. I have no problem committing to and staying attracted to one person... and SHE wants to make me like her, a bed hopper, a person that uses and abuses people for sex. I don't understand her. I'm tired of trying to. I'm tired of fighting alone for a relationship that could be so great. I am not asexual. I am not polyamorous. I am not emotionally unavailable or closed off to being intimate or vulnerable with someone I care about and am attracted to. But she is all those things and she won't even try to work with me on it together. I don't think I can do this anymore. I deserve happiness. I deserve communication. I deserve intimacy. I deserve someone who will reciprocate. I know for a fact that I don't deserve to cry over someone that claims to love me and want me as much as I have these past months. This is not love. Feeling rejected is not love. Feeling like someone is playing you for stupid is not love.

I've done many of these, despite overwhelming feelings of fear, anxiety, depression, and inadequacy. But it gets better. You just have to be willing to step out on faith.

You can always start over.  You can go back to school. You can quit your job.  You can change careers.  You can leave a bad relationship.  You can leave an okay relationship.  You can write that novel. You can write that song.  You can learn a new language.  You can learn to play the guitar.  You can get fit.  You can train for that half-marathon.  You can make new friends. You can start a business.  You can learn to cook.  You can kick your addiction.  You can reconnect with old friends.  You can change religions.  You can move to a new city. You can travel.  You can treat your depression.  You can lose weight.  You can learn to sew.  You could get up right now, pack a bag, and get on a bus to a whole new life if you wanted to.  You are never as trapped as you think you are. Change can be difficult, scary, and time-consuming, but it’s always possible. Opportunities can take a long time to appear, but they always show up. Be patient. Work hard. Love yourself. You can do this.
