Glenn Jones - Bergen County Farewell
Here, sitting on the world. To feel the world in such a way, where, here is simply a chair, and there thats’s a table, and yet at the same time, its a miracle, its an ecstasy.

& when my best friend died from the cancer that ate him inside I got drunk & I stayed that way for several nights into several days For the times I was aware what I remember is that you were there You held my head & I cried & cried You called our jobs & you lied & lied

If someone talked to you the way you do to you, I’d put their teeth through Love yourself! And that’s what they do, the bastards make you not want to look like you, so you pay through the nose to look like someone else. All you weirdos on the shelf: love yourself, love yourself, love yourself I GO OUTSIDE AND I FEEL FREE CUZ I SMASH MIRRORS AND FUCK TEEVEE
Joy as an Act of Resistance is very aptly named. I feel like this album will be as important to me as anything ever done by a band like the Clash, and I hope these guys find that kind of widespread audience. Thematically, this record is focused on unity, community, self love, self acceptance, getting out from under toxic masculinity and xenophobia… it’s simultaneously furiously angry and biting, but also playful and hopeful. The world is a bloody mess, but that doesn’t mean we should give in to despair, even in the darkest of moments.
This is one of my favorite tracks off the album. While Joe can clearly write more complex or symbolic lyrics (he’s a witty dude, as many of the other songs on the record illustrate), this song is just a blunt force instrument, a message of love delivered with snarling contempt for the things that push us to hate ourselves: The straightforward way of addressing the brutal negative self talk so many of us engage in, the way we treat ourselves in ways that we would virulently oppose if we saw someone else subjected to them, the linking of this to simple greed and how the induced insecurity of entire generations has been carefully tended by marketing companies, the false equating of stereotypical beauty with virtue, the call to say fuck it and disengage with it all.
And above all: love yourself, love yourself, love yourself
