So Undertale’s Japanese version was just released and I’ve been playing through it and making notes of new words. Here’s a list of a few I think would be useful to anyone else thinking of doing the same:

光るのお父さん; Dad of Light [Netflix Drama]

Note: This isn’t language related in the slightest, as I want to just write my raw feelings about this drama as it touched a lot of personal things for me. Plus, I watched it with English subtitles and didn’t really pay attention to the language use. I plan to rewatch it with Japanese subtitles, and when I do, I’ll write up a blog post about it from a language point of view! I just finished watching 光のお父さん and I just had to write about it. I’ve been so excited to watch this because it’s based on Final Fantasy XIV, an MMO I hold close to my heart. A lot happened on that game, especially good things. For about a year, I played with a Japanese guild. They were the nicest people I’ve met, and to this day we are still close and keep in touch on Twitter. It also improved my Japanese greatly! Fast forward a few months, I met my boyfriend, too. I associate nothing but good things with that game, so I was very excited when I realised Japan had released a drama based on the game. It ended up being probably the realest drama I’ve watched this year.

It’s quite short, only 7 episodes plus a bonus 8th episode (which I’ve yet to watch). It follows the story of a father and son. The son is a huge Final Fantasy fan, and used to be quite close to his father when he was younger. As time went on, they grew apart, to the point they rarely ever talked. One day, his father suddenly quits his job, and his son, in an effort to get to know his father better, buys him a PS4 as a retirement gift. He also buys him Final Fantasy XIV, and gets him set up on the game. The son has a plan. He’ll play the game with his father but won’t let his father know who he is in the game. He plays a blonde Miqote (cat girl type character) named Maidy. His father makes a Hyur (human type character) named ‘Indy Jones’ (haha!).

It’s a very heart-warming story. I watched it with English subtitles as my boyfriend wanted to watch it with me. We both kind of had an idea of where the story was going to go but it was very much a rollercoaster of emotions. It made us laugh, it made us smile, it made us almost cry (I eventually did, at one part. But I’ll put that under a ‘certain to be spoilers’, part...!) and it was just a really great drama. I feel it hit us harder than the usual viewer because we both owe a lot to the game. We both wouldn’t be where we are right now if we hadn’t have met in Limsa Lominsa that time. Most of the drama takes place in real life, and there are scenes of the son at work, and how he applies lessons he learns from the game into his real life, and visa versa. But there are scenes in the actual game, where they’ve dubbed the characters lines over the characters speaking in game. It was absolutely wonderful to watch, I loved the in-game scenes. They captured what it’s like playing on Japanese servers perfectly. A very strong sense of community. Japanese players don’t really ... separate role-play and just playing normally in a game. They don’t necessarily role-play, but they do take the game and their role very seriously. Most of the scenes were the players in the game all gathered around chatting in their shared house: this is something that happens a lot in the game! It was so charming and honestly, very heart-warming.

**!!Certain to be spoilers!! ** As you can expect, there has to be a ... twist to it, and there was. The father is ill. It never says what illness, but even without saying what illness it is, it captures the affect on the family perfectly. It only touches on the illness in maybe two episodes, but even then I was hurting for them. In my personal life, a very important and close family member is currently ill. There is no chance of recovery. I knew going in to watch this that it’d probably hit on that subject, and probably really get to me, and it did. There is a part where they address his illness, and his son says something to the effect of, ‘he’s fought many tough enemies before. He’ll certainly beat his illness!’ and... that was it. I wept. I turned to my boyfriend and cried my eyes out. That hit straight at home. It was the realest drama I’ve watched. It was a combination of a very important game/series, and a family dealing with an ill family member. Two subjects that are very close to me. I won’t say what becomes of his father, but let’s just say it’s certainly given me a new perspective on things. I’m not sure if it was the right time to watch this given everything going on in my personal life, but I’m glad I watched it. It helped me relive some great memories, and I laughed and cried throughout.  I definitely recommend people to watch it. Especially if you’ve played Final Fantasy XIV. It’s a very ... heart-warming drama. I really enjoyed it. I just needed to write about it somewhere hahaha. It hit me on so many levels. Looking forward to re-watching it already!

Progress Update [jp;kr;no;nl]

Hello hello,

I’ve definitely slowed down when posting updates, I do apologise (if anyone was particularly interested in them... haha!). As I’ve said many times before, I’m also juggling decorating an apartment and work at the same time, so some days I find myself quite busy. Following on from my small update yesterday, where I wrote a little post in Korean saying I had no time and I didn’t study Korean yesterday. I didn’t study anything yesterday BUT I did watch two episodes of the anime ‘Death Parade’ and noted down some new vocabulary which is always nice. I then rewatched both episodes later that night with my boyfriend which reinforced that new vocabulary, which is always great! I’ve been keeping up with Memrise for all languages - which is an amazing feat for me. Duolingo has taken a backseat once again, unfortunately. I find it hard to keep up with it sometimes, but I’m eagerly awaiting for Korean on Duolingo! I hope Android gets it the same time as iOS! Still also waiting for Dutch tree 2.0, when that finally releases I think I’ll definitely work on finishing the tree, and getting right back into my studies. Norwegian is slow as ever, but that’s how I like it!  Okay, that’s it for the general summary.  Let’s break each language down and see what I’ve been doing: Korean: I found the TV show Heart Signal recently which seems to be the Korean version of Terrace House with a twist. All the participants need to anonymously text the person they are interested in at midnight every night. They don’t know who the text is from as it gets to set to a manager who then forwards it to the right person. There’s 3 girls and 3 boys, and I’ve watched all of episode 1 and about half of episode 2. The episodes are quite long (1 hour and 20 minutes!), and a lot of it is subbed in Korean, especially the interactions between the house members. I’m really enjoying it and I’ve picked up some words/expressions already. It’s great to hear real, natural Korean out in the wild, it’s also interesting to see dynamics between young Koreans from a cultural standpoint, and how they build relationships. I’m really enjoying it but I’ve had to take the episodes in small bites, as it’s hard to commit almost 2 hours everyday to just watching a TV show, so I’ve been watching it alongside working through ‘How To Study Korean’, a site I am really enjoying working through. I’ve also been keeping up with Memrise and doing the HTSK deck there. All in all, Korean is going quite well, and I’m very much enjoying it. I’m hoping by next week, I can write a small paragraph on HelloTalk and receive corrections/improvements to see how far I’ve came so far! Japanese: I went by my fathers house last night and picked up yet more books. I have a huge bookshelf there with all my Japanese books on, and I’ve been slowly picking them up. Tonight I grabbed my N2 新完全マスター series books (and some manga!) Very happy to be reunited with them. Planning to work through 語彙 and 文法, then possibly 読解. I have plans to eventually take the N2, I’m thinking it’ll be next years resolution, but for now, I’m using them to refine my Japanese, especially vocabulary and grammar. I’ve been practising speaking on HelloTalk by sending voice messages. I’m not confident enough to call people, and I’m worried about awkward silences, so I figured voice messages are better. I can take my time, and can still get some speaking practice. It’s been quite successful so far, and it feels really good when you speak, send it off, and they reply... you think, huh, I���m actually communicating in this language! Alongside that, I’ve been keeping up with my 読書の秋 project. I read about 3 pages last night, and noted down about 15 words. The words themselves are very literature-only, so I’m not sure if I want to commit them all to memory. I would say about 3 are actually daily use. I plan to read more pages today, and I’ll write a post about it either tonight or on the weekend. Dutch: Forever forever sitting in the back. I’m still watching a Dutch video daily, however! I have kept up with that. I’ve also kept up with doing Dutch on Memrise, still working on Dutch 1 but slowly approaching the end. Dutch 2 is in sight! My boyfriend showed me a conversation with his friend last night and I was able to read it and laugh. My passive knowledge is seemingly light years ahead of my active knowledge, but that’ll soon be changing once I get started working on textbooks again. I luckily have a lot of exposure so even though I’m not actively studying it, I’m still hearing it, or reading it, or even using the odd word with my boyfriend.  Norwegian: Right now, it’s the posts I see on Tumblr and Memrise. I don’t mind though! I’m enjoying taking it slow. I also got recommended a Norwegian Youtuber, so I’m thinking I’ll add their videos into my daily routine. But not a lot to report on Norwegian.
