Mizi’s “True Face”

These specific frames confirmed for me that Mizi knows and has known so much more than we (the audience) thought she knew.

So much more than even those closest to her thought she knew.

It’s the curse of perspective.

To everyone else (Sua, Till, Ivan, etc.), Mizi was a beacon of light.

A pure being who could do no wrong, had no flaws, and was always smiling, positive, and perfect.

She was beautiful. Naive. Innocent.

That’s what we were led to believe as well, because much of what we’ve learned about Mizi has been through the eyes of those around her.

Everyone loved her. It was impossible not to.

She didn’t know of the horrors their world would inflict upon them.

And no one wanted to break that facade because it would break the illusion of who they perceived Mizi to be; an illusion that they all relied on, one way or another.

Not Shine, and definitely not Sua or Till.

But that’s not the true Mizi.

She experiences negative emotions.

Hurt. Fear. Anger.

Sadness. Resignation. Disgust, even.

But she stuffs it down. Ignores it. She acts clueless because that’s easier than confronting the situation or the “bad” feelings that come with it.

This is how Mizi copes.

Like when Till tells Mizi that he likes her because she’s pretty, for a moment Mizi’s face is shadowed and obscured by her hair.

Only one of her eyes is visible and it looks… dull. Flat. Like Mizi is realizing something she doesn’t want to.

Her mask slips and we see a window into the feelings she’s hiding.

Then in the next panel, that look is gone, replaced by her smile and usual cheery attitude, as if it’s no big deal.

She brushes her hair away from her face and fixes the mask back into place.

The shadow disappears too.

If Mizi doesn’t acknowledge Till’s romantic feelings for her, then they don’t exist. She doesn’t have to worry about what acknowledging them might mean for their friendship since she doesn’t reciprocate.

Everything is fine if you pretend it’s fine. The horrors don’t exist if you don’t look at them. Try to remain positive. Don’t think about it too much.

Be pleasant to everyone.

Smile until your cheeks hurt.

Apologize even if they’re the ones that are wrong. Even if they hurt you.

But you can’t bottle things up forever. Eventually they spill out, whether you want them to or not.

When Mizi reaches her limit, when all of the negative emotions she has been holding back spill over, she lashes out.

She slapped Sua.

She attacked Luka on stage.

She snapped at Hyuna who was trying to comfort her after she was rescued.

Oftentimes Mizi cries when she snaps because even though we’ve seen her cry a few times as a child, I think she bottles up a lot of her sadness too.

And now, Mizi is crying again.

Her negative emotions are spilling out again.

But this time it’s different.

Worse.

There’s nowhere to run or hide. She can’t ignore those feelings any longer. Her inner demons are seeping out.

Grief. Guilt. Remorse.

She tears herself apart for being the last one left.

The sole survivor.

Everyone she was pretending for is dead. Whatever comes next is only for her to decide.

after phos prays everyone away, the final arc welcomes a new "beginning" for phos healing, finding closure, and further understanding themselves and the universe…

noticeably, their pain dissipates into warmth, like a song coming to a slow, soft end. there is comfort realizing how phos embraces their happiness and takes in the new perspectives they learn through their newfound friendships <:") their final life ends up being hopeful and beautiful in its own way... i love how hnk makes me feel.....
