I don’t think people are really representing Chell incorrectly when they make her fully verbal per se, we all have different interpretations of her character. But I do find it odd, because to me her being partially verbal or nonverbal is part of what makes her Chell. I honestly can’t imagine her any other way.
I’ve seen interpretations where she may be deaf as well but honestly I don’t think that’s the case. Especially since the defense for this is “well she might not be able to hear Wheatley/GLaDOS talking to her.” But she clearly can, because she responds to Wheatley in the apple scene, just not verbally. Plus, if she had some sort of assistive technology to allow her to hear, it would’ve been vaporized by emancipation grills by now.
That said, I don’t hate this interpretation. I think people can make it work. Really I don’t hate any interpretation of Chell. She’s a pretty blank slate all things considered, and like most mute protagonists, she’s literally made for the player to project on.
Personally, I think she has autism. Surprisingly I don’t see this headcanon a lot. Which is weird because being partially verbal or nonverbal is part of the autism spectrum. The not knowing when to quit and other noted abnormalities we see mentioned about her in the Lab Rat comic I think could also support this. She has a high IQ, though not the highest, implying a good sense of pattern recognition (common with people on the spectrum). Not only that, I imagine she has pretty high pain tolerance or otherwise abnormal reactions to pain, given how she manages to keep pushing despite being full of bullet holes (which is another trait common with people on the spectrum just because of how our sensory issues work). The little complaints about having to build another potato battery on her BYDTWD project in Portal 2 also stuck out to me. There are a lot of little things that even if they’re just part of the gameplay, they make her feel like she may be autistic.
And yes these apply to Gordon Freeman too, but I have a different set of headcanons for him that I may go over if people see this and wonder about it.
#I personally love autism chell#my headcanon specifically though is that the brain damage from the extended sleep actually caused her to go mute#whereas before she was only nonverbal out of convenience/stubbornness

The Cranberries reference if it isn’t obvious they do in fact have to let it linger
