Because of my inspiration from Maria or the Wrongs of Women and Maria and the Vindication of Women, this blog will discuss the aesthetics of writing and the influence of the pen and cursive on makeup as well as the aesthetic of jail and sadness on makeup. https://www.refinery29.com/en-us/women-in-prison-makeup
Currently, I’m having some trouble finding cursive’s influence on art or makeup. However, read this article on what women have used in jail throughout history for their makeup. This brings me to the discussion of the cabaret and the morose, messy makeup found in jail.

Use your triggers and write about them. It’ll help you not be so defensive next time they come up. I like being told to chill but not calm down in one sentence with no words before or after. Just two periods… pisses me off

Black lipstick for th office is red or dark brown. You look intimidating from a distance so you don’t interrupt their work, but upon closer investigation, you look friendly and possibly flirty even

A brand of tiktok video that I really hate (especially when it’s posted by a makeup artist or brand) is the type that says “mainstream media never shows skin texture, here are some unedited photos of skin”, and all their photographs are women in heavy makeup.
What they show in these photos is not the “texture of skin”, but rather the texture of several layers of wax, pigment, and oil. Heavy makeup only ever looks “good” in an edited photo because having clumps of pigmented oil on your face is objectively repulsive.

Graphic liner. What started the popular trend that makes other makeup seem amateur in comparison? To be a makeup artist is becoming equivalent to a tattoo artist with all of the requirements of popular and effective makeup work. https://www.thelist.com/401200/this-graphic-eyeliner-trend-isnt-for-the-faint-of-heart/
When precise and symmetrical graphic liner is the focus of subcultural looks, they start to lose their focus on damning beauty standards and artistic perfection. How do we use the graphic liner trend in a punk way that focuses on imperfection? Think Edward Gorey, Nic Blinko, and Tim burton art. How do we bring these styles back? Are dull lines or squiggly lines the way to do it? These were popular alternative makeup styles in 2017, but now where do we go when they have been taken and ramped up if you will?

What does the spectral nature of ghosts tell us about the transient and short lived nature of womanhood? Is ghostliness the next level down from vagina envy where one cannot penetrate or envelope or encompass? Read “Fleur” by Louise Erdrich

I want to thank my classmate Emily Fourcier for bringing this book to my attention
‘The more legal and material hindrances women have broken through, the more strictly and heavily and cruelly images of female beauty have come to weigh upon us. […] During the past decade, women breached the power structure; meanwhile, eating disorders rose exponentially and cosmetic surgery became the fastest-growing medical speciality. […] We are in the midst of a violent backlash against feminism that uses images of female beauty as a political weapon against women’s advancement: the beauty myth.’
—  Naomi Wolf, The Beauty Myth, (1990) p. 10

I would like to discuss the concept of nose contouring in regards to race. I will eventually tackle each of the different types of contours and discuss which kind of stereotypes or body images are perpetuated by each. However, the nose contour is up for debate regarding which group of people is most denigrated against. I have been seeing more usage of bronzer on the nose to make noses look flatter and wider, but for the most part, the elongated lines on the side of the nose and the highlight in the middle and at the tip show a European beauty standard. As Essence’s writer Brianna McCarthy explains, she “ can’t help but feel like contouring our noses is a subconscious (or for some a conscious) attempt to make our beautifully blunt noses conform to European standards.” I find this strange because I always found the European long nose to look more along the lines of male beauty standards. This just showcases the contradictions of beauty standards.
Back to the concept of the wider and flatter nose, the bronzing is usually done with pink or baby pastel colors as part of an overall cute sie look which just adds to the exoticization and infantilization of Eastern and Southern girls. The articles used for my reference below do not really discuss the orientalization or the infantilization, but they discuss the messy, sick, or incapable look which they que the audience to portray. These visuals convey the same inability that is common of little girls. I wonder why being unkempt and sunburnt or sick is supposed to be charming unless someone is meant to take care of the wearer and bring them back to health-like a parent.
