GRRM is in fact really good at making up top tier characters i will use the starklings to illustrate the point okay you got: 1) high school freshman King Arthur stars in a shakespearean tragedy, as told by his mom; 2) local moody teenaged Starbucks night shift manager must do his very best to stop the zombie apocalypse through the power of friendship; 3) a middle schooler who keeps her sparkly butterfly gel pens in perfect rainbow order at all times is being held hostage by her evil middle school boyfriend and his evil blonde mafia family; 4) a scrappy but poorly-supervised middle-grade book protagonist bops about a war-zone looking for her family but instead! learns about Death; 5) paraplegic fourth grader Frodo Baggins receives mystical visions and must go on a quest to see a hundred-year-old tree guy; and 6) kindergartener that Bites
#a song of ice and fire#I love ASOIAF (that's why I'm critical of it!) and one of the biggest reasons is GRRM's ability to write characters#it's a cast of thousands but each one is memorable even the most minor of characters#...I better not be reverting to my ASOIAF fannish ways

like I'm sorry but I will keep posting about this until people stop being cunts and shitheads so I think we'll be here a good while. every time I talk about the colonial framing of australia and how colonialism is at work in modern day understandings of this country I only need to count to ten before every european and usamerican in sight starts spouting complete bullshit. why don't you all take a deep breath and examine why the fuck you're so wedded to the idea of australia you have in your head
#I think what I find sad about the lands that are now Australia/Tasmania is that for millennia people worked out the best way to live there#by understanding how to live WITH the land and not against it#and then Europeans came and went 'what if we made it hard for everyone to live here by not living with the land'#'and also by importing animals like sheep whose hooves damage the fragile plants and create erosion'#'and also killing those who know how best to live with the land'#there are regions in the world that are more challenging to live in sure (like the Arctic or deserts)#but that doesn't mean they're not beautiful and liveable

I am a trained scholarly professional and I still giggle when I see this in manuscripts

(More context: it's from the offertory in the office of the dead and the word in question is usually spelled poenis. Medieval Latin tends to smush diphthongs together, though, which results in a lot of unintentional comedy)
#to the tune of Handel's Hallelujah chorus:#🎵 penis music! penis music! 🎵#music#Latin#(actually regrettably have also worked out that kung pow penis also works with the Hallelujah chorus. same syllable length.)

How can you call yourself a fan of an author or his story and at the same time humiliate and hurt him in front of his own fanbase and a colleague in a public meeting?
How can you look into the eyes of a man who has called the Starks and Daenerys his only children, since him and his wife had infertility problems, and say that he has no desire to see his story come to an end?
How can you look into the eyes of a man who sacrificed his time and his mind and his passion and his heart to create a story that millions of people love and tell him that none of this matters because he's an old man now and his life is now winding down and he should leave the conclusion of his life's work to the colleague who sits next to him?
And how do you think that colleague must feel knowing how many sacrifices and sleepless nights there are to reach the end of a book in seeing his colleague so mistreated by his own fanbase when he himself said that he could never accept it and that their styles are too different?
[ i am talking about the person at Worldcon that said to Martin that he is too old and ready to die and that he should let Sanderson - that was right next to him - wrote the last 2 books. ]
