Brothers Jared and Shannon Leto formed American rock band 30 Seconds to Mars in 1998, a mere three years after Jared wrapped up production on the best project he'll ever work on, the teen drama "My So-Called Life". You may also recognize him from Their breakthrough single, "The Kill" helped propel the band to notoriety in 2005. In 2019, it was alleged after the band's annual Camp Mars/Mars Island retreat that they had founded a cult with their fanbase, The Echelon, most likely due to J. Leto's penchant for long robes and flowing hair.

But are they emo?

Avril Lavigne is a singer/songwriter from Canada who first rose to fame with her debut song "Complicated" way back in 2002. Her follow-up song "Sk8er Boi" told the story of an ill-fated romance between a punk and a ballerina. Her song "Girlfriend" hit the top of the Billboard 100 in 2007. On her most recent album "Love Sux", released in 2022, she collaborated with certified non-emos Mark Hoppus and Machine Gun Kelly.

The Used is a band from Utah who released their first album in 2002. The band's profile increased in the early 2000s when lead singer Bert McCracken dated Kelly Osbourne and appeared in an episode of her family's reality show The Osbournes. They were Warped Tour regulars, joining the tour for 8 summers, however cancelled their 2007 appearances when McCracken had to undergo vocal surgery. Their first two albums are certified Platinum, and their most recent record, Toxic Positivity, came out in May 2023.

In 1999 the band released their music video for "All the Small Things", which parodied some of the most successful pop acts of the day and was, somewhat ironically, a minstay on MTV's TRL daily video countdown. Guitarist Tom DeLonge recently rejoined the group after departing in 2015. The group's 3 core members have been involved in other notable bands including +44, Angels & Airwaves, and Box Car Racer.

Bring Me the Horizon is a British band that formed in 2004. Their name comes from a quote from Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl. In 2016, the band performed at the NME Awards and trashed Coldplay's table, with Chris Martin famously calling the incident "very rock and roll". They have been nominated for two Grammys, including Best Rock Album, for which their 2019 album Amo was nominated.

The Academy Is... is a band from Chicago mostly active from 2003-2011. Currently, the members are William Beckett (lead vocals, piano), Adam Siska (bass), Mike Carden (rhythm guitar, backing vocals), and Andy Mrotek (drums). They were signed to Fueled By Ramen on the basis of an EP the first year of the band. Their first album, Almost There, was released in 2005. TAI reunited for Riot Fest in 2022 and have a new single on spotify.

The results are in! This was a deep cut, to be fair, but apparently very influential in early emo even if the band itself doesn't want to be called that.

Moss Icon is an American band formed in late 1986 in Annapolis, Maryland, US. Its original lineup was vocalist Jonathan Vance, guitarist Tonie Joy, bassist Monica DiGialleonardo, and drummer Mark Laurence. Alex Badertscher joined as second guitarist in 1990. Their first release, Demo Tape was self-released on cassette in 1987. Their other full-length, Lyburnum Wit's End Liberation Fly, was recorded in 1988 but not issued until 1994.

Sleeping with Sirens started in Orlando, Florida (US) and first became popular with "If I'm James Dean, You're Audrey Hepburn" off of their first album With Ears to See and Eyes to Hear (2010). Current members are Kellin Quinn (lead vocals, keyboards, the only original member), touring lead guitarist Tony Pizzuti, Nick Martin (rhythm guitar, backing vocals), Justin Hills (bass guitar, backing vocals) and Matty Best (drums, percussion). Fun facts: Kellin Quinn's voice is a "leggero tenor", and spotify says they have the most monthly listeners in Jakarta, Indonesia.

Their first album, Joyce Manor, was released in 2011 and Punknews named it their "2011 Album of the Year". 40 oz. to Fresno is their 6th and most recent album, released in 2022. Guitarists Barry Johnson and Chase Knobbe first met and bonded in late 2008 (over blink-128), and in 2009 added bassist Matt Ebert and drummer Kurt Walcher. They're known for writing very short songs.
