some time ago (somewhere around 2021) when i was practicing with POSCA pens, I did a few color sketches of Eilonwy from the Chronicles of Prydain. She was always a very fun character to read.

Here is part 12 of the set of storyboards for sequence, four of the black cauldron, and we have the same as before, but with the storyboard being placed in different positions from the last. There were additional shots of the castle, though, and it showed the two heroes running through tunnels, and a view of the area of the castle. One was complete with towers and a broken roof. However, there might be more to come so give us a little bit of something new.
Stay tuned for more.

As a kid, I spent quite a while staring at my family's tattered paperback cover for Lloyd Alexander's The High King, the fifth and final book in the high fantasy kid's book series 'Chronicles of Prydain.'
It's a visceral scene that pulls the viewer in like any cover should. Check out the fear in those bugging eyes. The ligaments of the knee. The ligaments on that Couldron-born zombie's neck. A lot of ligaments in this one! This image may have been my childhood introduction to the concept of ligaments.
The artist is the Belgian illustrator Jean-Léon Huens (1921-1984).

Here is part 11 of the set of storyboards for sequence 4 of "The Black Cauldron". Here we get to see an alternate or extended intro of Fflewddur Flamm where we get more crucial dialogs regarding his character and what he saw in the dungeon like the iron maiden, the rack and an axe. In fact, this part had more dialogue than the previous version I showed you plus it had an additional gag that involved Fflewddur telling the guards to go the opposite direction of where Taran and along we went while they were in search of the two fugitives. It may have dragged the scene a little more had they included it in the film, but it was funny nonetheless.
Then came the part when Taryn came face-to-face with the brutish henchman and just like in the last version, the confrontation begins.
More to come when it comes to this version of the sequence.

Here is part 10 of the set of storyboards for sequence four of the black cauldron, and the second part of the second iteration Of the sequence. Here we see more of the tomb part and we got to see an alternate version of the part in which Taran and Eilonwy came upon the door to the secret chamber.
There is also another version of Fflewddur’s introduction that has more to it in terms of dialogue and shots that we did not see in the film.
Speaking of which, there are some missing and alternate dialogue between Taran and Eilonwy in the tomb and after they saw Creeper and a henchman haul a cart into the chamber. you might be surprised by how different the dialogue is for the film. Not to mention a bit of information that should’ve been used in the film.
We will see more of the intro scene of the minstrel in the next part so, stay tuned for that.

Here is part eight of the set of storyboards for a sequence four of the black cauldron. We see Fflewddur being chased by the guard dog and managing to catch up with Taran and Eilonwy so that the trio can escape from the castle.
We see no dialogue from Fflewddur, but we do see an alternate line said by Taran. In the final film, he said, “Run princess! Run!” But in here, we see him say, “Run, Eilonwy! Run!” I don’t know why they change that line but this sure was something. also, we don’t see that line that had the bard saying, “Why didn’t you tell me you had a magic sword?” maybe it was a last minute addition to the film in terms of script writing. but I’m not so sure, honestly. And also, we see the guard dog, just standing through the holes at the gate holding with a piece of his victim’s pants in his mouth where is in the film, the dog crawled up through the holes with a piece of fabric in his mouth, and then fainted. maybe they put a little more into that for animation’s sake. That’s what I’m wondering.
Anyway, that’s the that’s part of one alternate version of the sequence, but we’re still not through the batch yet. stay tuned for the next part because we’re gonna get started on the second alternate version of the sequence.

Here is part seven of the set of storyboards for sequence four of the Black Cauldron.
Here we see Taran and Eilonwy trying to evade some weapons that creeper and a henchman threw at them while they were trapped at the drawbridge. Thankfully, however, Taran had the magic sword so that he would use it to break the chain that would bring the drawbridge down. as we see here, there are a few parts that were not in the film like him, looking up the chain and how he reacted to the chain of the drawbridge going up. That was her, but a few missing shots in here. then there was Fflewddur being chased by the dog still.
More storyboards to come.

Here is part six of the set up storyboards for sequence four of the black cauldron. Here we see more of the escape from the castle. There’s one bit with Fflewddur Who was trying to escape from the guard dog then, there was Taran poking some holes in the barrels, Resulting in some wine, squirting out of the holes and having the guards slip on the wine in order to slow them down. then there was him and Eilonwy running through the castle courtyard until they stopped at the drawbridge, resulting in them being cornered by the henchmen.
What we see are a few bits that were not present in the film like a henchman throwing a barrel at our heroes only for Taran to destroy the barrel, and cut down the tower that the henchman stood on. and also Taran skipping with glee with sword in hand while he and Eilonwy were running through the hall. and also a few other shots of the henchmen, having wine squirted upon them. A few parts of these were probably in a comic book adaptation of the film, but not the film it’s off. There’s plenty more to come, so stay tuned.

Here is part nine of the set of storyboards for sequence four of the black cauldron and part one of the second version of the sequence. Here it begins with Taran meeting Eilonwy for the first time in the dungeon.
What’s really interesting to note is that there are some alternate dialogue, and also those that did not make it into the film, but would provide it a little more insight into what’s going on into the castle. for starters, instead of her saying, “I’m Princess Eilonwy.” She said, “I am a princess. Don’t you know that?” Believe it, or not, if you look closely, the lip-synch was a bit off in the final film. Well, she was saying, the former. the work print revealed that she was actually saying, the latter line, which matched the lip sync a little better . Technically the clips of the unfinished version were in a documentary that was found in the electronic press kit, which is rare these days. It was, however, found in the libraries that has the copies of that. One of which was in UCLA .
When you have her explaining how long she waited, and what she expected to wait for, while the two were walking through the tunnels under the castle. there was also a hint of a war that was, for when she was talking about the great king, who built the castle before the horned king, took it over. Had they kept that line into the film, it would’ve helped people get a little more sense of what’s going on.
And then there was also one part that could’ve been in the film, the part, when Taran picked up the sword, so he got he would be amazed by it. I had to use that in the film, we would get more of him being amazed by the sword, and they should not have cut that part out so that we could admire the details of the sword.
more of the tomb scene will come along with what happens next in the next part so be sure to stay tuned for that.
