Once Eddie's sitting down, settled in the chair, he tips his head back bathing his face in the light of the moon. It's half full, but shining brightly in the night sky. Steve can't help but admire the way it illuminates the strands of Eddie's wild hair.

"Okay, this is nice," Eddie admits, taking a deep breath. "I feel like I can breathe easier out here."

"See?" Steve knocks on his head. "I'm smarter than I look."

"You're plenty smart, Harrington," Eddie replies with a grin. He snatches the joint out of Steve's fingers and takes a puff, keeps looking up at the moon thoughtfully.

THE BALLAD OF EDDIE MUNSON’S BATTLE VEST

"Go on," Wayne nods, urging him to close the blades and make his first cut. He does it slowly and nervously. The scissors are sharp and cut into the thick fabric like a hot knife into butter. He's more confident with the next cut and soon enough he's cut all the way round back to where they started. He admires his work. It's not perfect, there's tiny scraps of the sleeve still hanging off, probably from the places where he had to open the heavy scissors for the next cut.

"Good job, Eddie," Wayne says.

The sky morphs from twilight into night, cerulean and white giving way to navy blue and glowing pinpricks of light, and Eddie takes a drag. In the midst of it all, the moon takes center stage, replacing the sun as it sets behind the horizon. As a kid, before things went wrong enough for him to realize things were wrong, his mom was always tugging him outside on nights like this.

Come look at the moon, Eddie, she’d say, voice soft with a hint of the Kentucky twang she never quite lost. It’s so pretty tonight.

Eddie swallows, harsh and thick, and releases a shaky exhale. “You good, man?”

Steve grins and nods. “Little tight back here, huh?”

“Terrible conditions for the leading man, I have to say.” Eddie whispers.

“Eh,” Steve starts. “I don’t think they’re that bad.”

Eddie’s sure that he’s hallucinated the way Steve’s eyes flicker down to his lips and back up. Wayne always says that Eddie has a knack for seeing what he wants to see, after all.

“That’s your cue,” Steve moves and jerks his head to the stage. “See you back out there, Kenickie.” The motherfucker winks and Eddie’s head spins, his lines jumbled and his steps just a bit off.
