Thereā€™s something about the ocean...
(In which I finally go completely haywire, because the wait for this next game is slowly but surely rotting my brainā€¦)
So, hereā€™s something that has been on my mind ever since I first read all of Tevinter Nights.
Tell me if Iā€™m wrong, but surely I wasnā€™t the only one who thought, after finishing the whole book and looking at it in its entirety, that there seemed to be a notable recurring theme related toā€¦ the ocean?
A quick summary: Weā€™ve gotā€¦
- the Qunari occupying the shores along the Arlathan Forest, to get resources for building more ships/dreadnoughts for their invasion
- some truly horrifying creatures lurking underground/beneath mountains that are not darkspawn but something much worse, probably the result of some evil ancient lyrium experiments from Ghilan'nain, made with ā€œa gray fluid that smells like the oceanā€, despite the fact that they werenā€™t anywhere near the sea
- an entire chapter about another octopus-esque monster with tentacles that lives in the sewers of Minrathous and kills countless people
- a confrontation on board a Qunari ship, the new Darvaarad, right before Rivaini harbors, that almost lead to war between Tevinter and Rivain
- in general, most of the chapters including scenes set around docks, harbors, beaches, coasts, rivers and lakes at some point
- an appearance of one of the Executors, a mysterious group of people who are coming from across the sea, and that Solas labels as ā€œdangerousā€
Thereā€™s also this super gorgeous illustrated map of Thedas that came with every copy of the book and features quite a lot of intriguing looking sea creatures. šŸ‘€
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Now, when I first thought about why that would be, I concluded that, well, of course the ocean is going to be more ā€œprominentā€, considering how DA4 will be set in northern Thedas, primarily centering around Tevinter, Antiva, Rivain, Seheron or maybe even Par Vollen, ALL of which located directly at sea or very near the coastline. So naturally it makes sense for a book setting up the course for the next game, to focus more on that part of the world.
So when I first saw the DA4 Behind the scenes video at Gamescom then, a lot of the concept art seemed to confirm my assumption, presenting the possibility of a much more ā€œoceanicā€ setting.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
All this being said though, upon second thoughtā€¦ If we turn to the deep sea lore with all of this in mind, I think.. there might be more to the ocean and its relevants for DA4 than just the setting. šŸ‘€
Let us start by thinking about how the elements/nature factor into the lore in general. The first that comes to my mind is the oldest and perhaps most significant conflict in the history of Thedas that we know of (to date). The ancient elves, their magical floating cities, ā€œgodsā€ flying around in the form of dragons and a civilization build and dependent on the magic of the Fade, also called ā€œthe Skyā€, going at war with the Children of the Stone or rather ā€œthe Pillars of the Earthā€ itself, the Titans.
So, if we have the ā€œSkyā€ essentially fighting the ā€œEarthā€ā€¦
Thenā€¦ what about the Ocean?
Where does the ocean factor into all of this/what role does it play in the great scheme of it all and how is it relevant to the story of DA4, aside from its setting?
I might have an idea, but you may want to get that tinfoil hat first (and maybe some tea and a bit of time) before reading any further. šŸ˜ Itā€™s just thoughts cobbled together in the hope of making any lick of sense (it wonā€™t). lol
(Also, please picture me exactly like this meme while reading any of this.)
Tumblr media
Soā€¦ Letā€™s talk about the Void for a second, shall we?

made the mistake of clicking on the "for you" tab and saw the worst dragon age text post I have ever seen. It was like "man, I hope Bioware goes back to exploring [idea they thoroughly explored in all 3 games] like they did in Origins. I just know that they're just so obsessed with [idea that has been the main focus of everything from the very first cutscene of Origins]. I'm so sick of it."
This is what 10 years of not actually playing any of the games and playing them in your head is like. 10 years. I think some of you guys need a break. I know it did me some good.

My thoughts/headcanons about the different styles of magic across Thedas. I'm skipping avvar and elvhenan because... idk i don't feel like it (we also can't really comprehend the extent of elvhen magic yet. perhaps we never will.):
SOUTHERN CIRCLES: perhaps the one we've been most familiar with until now. Solas criticises Vivienne on a few counts with regards to her magic and I think this sums it up: "Your rigorous training lays a solid foundation, true. It also creates boundaries, limits, where none need exist." I think that's indicative of the Southern approach to magic in general. The Chantry needs to keep its mages under a tight leash, but it also has a vested interest in training them to be useful, especially in a military capacity. Within the Circles there is some room for experimentation and advancement, but it's always limited by fear and the harsh regulations imposed on their use of magic.
Therefore I think Southern Circle magic tends towards the practical, the utilitarian, somewhat of an inflexible, blunt approach. They likely favour elemental magic, though spirit healing seems to be reluctantly tolerated for its sheer usefulness. There's some variety, though, such as the Kirkwall Circle favouring Force Magic.
TEVINTER: obviously Tevinter mages enjoy a great deal more freedom in terms of magic, and can freely experiment and push the limits, in fact they're incentivised to do so. Leaving aside blood magic for now, magic is an intrinsic part of Tevinter culture, and Circles are regarded as prestigious academies-- I think magic there is viewed as an art, a science. Obviously from a banter between Solas and Dorian we know that Tevinter stole techniques from the ancient elves. There are likely some similarities although obviously Tevinter magic has evolved since then.
Imo Tevinter magic is about precision, skillfulness, refinement, elegance, subtlety. There's almost a certain poetry to it, though it is also showy, ostentatious. They appreciate magic for magic's sake, not just as a tool. I talked in a different post about how I don't like Necromancy for Dorian and I wish he'd had a specialisation that showcased an aspect of Tevene magic other than blood magic- like I said I think this could have been glyph-based magic, which is showy but also might require skill and dexterity.
DALISH: The Dalish mages we've met have been very capable and well-trained, so I think it's unfair to say their magic is inferior to anyone else's. I think it's simply different. Since they live so closely with nature I tend to think they have an intuitive, instinctual approach to magic, almost a natural ease. To Dalish mages, magic is like breathing, though there is a lot of study that goes into it as well.
Obviously we have direct examples of Keeper magic in both Velanna and Merrill, so apart from the typical thornblades-type spells I'd also say they favour primal magic (lightning, stonefist/petrify etc)- based somewhat on the fact that Merrill doesn't have access to the elemental tree in da2. Not that I don't think they can summon fire, but I think they view fire magic differently. This is my headcanon/inference but, like healers, Keepers follow Sylaise's Vir Atish'an, the way of peace. Sylaise represents healing, but also fire. For someone who lives in a forest, fire is useful, but can be destructive if it gets out of control. I believe they don't view fire as an offensive tool primarily, but as something healing.
QUNARI: again, Qunari magic is severely limited, even more so than in Southern Circles. I think the Qunari view their mages as basically walking rocket launchers, but magic is their blind spot. They're terrified of it, so they'll never get the most out of its possibilities. I mean, their mages can't even talk to each other, so what chance is there of exchanging ideas and advancing? This might be the reason why they haven't totally crushed Tevinter tbh. It does seem that Qunari/Vashoth likely make naturally powerful mages, it's just that their magic is unrefined, brutal, basic but destructive. I imagine they favour the most basic elemental or primal magic, hardly venturing into any other schools at all. The Saarebas seem to have lightning abilities in-game, which fits a society which is technologically advanced but limited when it comes to magic.
NEVARRA: so obviously we've got the Mortalitasi. Tbh I'm not as interested in the Mortalitasi as I could be, I think necromancy just doesn't appeal to me in terms of vibes lol. But anyway, it's clear that magic in Nevarra has a ritualistic importance, it's dark and secretive, subtle, and even though it can be used offensively that seems to be a secondary purpose. I think, like in Tevinter, magic is likely an intellectual or a scientific pursuit, but here it also has a religious significance. Obviously they favour spirit magic and necromancy. Unlike Rivain and the Avvar, though, they seem to view spirits as tools/slaves- in Tevinter Nights we see a Mortalitasi using a wisp to stir her tea for example.
RIVAIN: ugh my faves. There's a good chance we'll get to see this in the next game and I couldn't be more excited. We know that the women are trained as Seers and commune with spirits. The Circles there are really just a front to appease the Chantry, while the unique brand of Rivaini magic is a natural facet of life. I think it's probably witchy, obviously spiritual, intuitive, likely also ritualistic. Obviously a lot of it is spirit magic, probably spirit healing, but I like to think they also use Entropy magic (my beloved) because the idea of curses just kind of fits the witchy vibes of it all. Since their culture is so entwined with the sea, storm magic also might make sense.

Since my Baldur's Gate brain rot is still not cured, I would love for spells/abilities to have more impact on dialogues/roleplay rather than pure combat. For instance, BG3 had spells that were only used when talking to people - detect thoughts, prestidigation, friends, or that one time where you could offer to heal an injured tieffling. I know that's not what they're going with, but let me pretend i'm a mage that can do something else than summoning napalm. DAI had class specific dialogues and Perks that let you have specific reactions to stuff. I want that, turned up to eleven.
On the subject of dialogue, more banter ! More ! I would also deeply love more spirit/odd magic than the elemental one we got. Your idea of dreaming in places to arpent the Fade and learn stuff from it would be amazing.
I don't want healing magic back. On the side and in dialogues, sure, but not on the battlefield.
I'm not that much into crafting, but i loved that we could tint bits and pieces of armor separately rather than always the whole thing.
Also, i played GOW Ragnarok, and i'm sort of curious playing that kind of game as a full mage, in a more dynamical/weighted way than the usual MMORPG-adjacent experience.
Also also, if the character creator could be decently lit, that would be swell.
My personal DA4 wishlist + thoughts
Iā€™ve been teasing this post for a couple of weeks over at Twitter, iā€™m the worst! But anyway, since game journalism has decided to confirm, once again, that the next Dragon Age game will be set in Tevinter like thatā€™s breaking news, nowā€™s as good a time as ever to write all this down.
Locations: Tevinter, clearly. Itā€™s been pretty much a given since the end of Trespasser in 2015, with that scene where the Inquisitor stabs a map on a table directly on Tevinter as they promise to go after Solas to stop him. But also concept art and several stories from Tevinter Nights heavily imply Antiva, Nevarra, the Anderfells, and maybe Rivain. For those of you who donā€™t know your Thedosian Geography 101, thatā€™s basically Northern Thedas. And it makes sense, since so far for three games straight weā€™ve been first stuck in Ferelden, then the coast of the Free Marches, and later the rest of Southern Thedas. Weā€™ve never been North, only heard of it. So in DA4 iā€™m sure we will finally be able to visit.
Characters: If weā€™re going to Tevinter, we must meet Dorian again, maybe meet Maevaris Tilani as well (previously only seen in comics), judging from the latest comics series, iā€™m hoping for Fenris too. And going by the latest teaser trailer, we might see Varric again. As for characters that so far we have no news of, iā€™d like to see Cole, the Iron Bull, and if by any chance BioWare feels like blessing us with a Hawke/Fenris reunion i might just die happy.Ā  Iā€™d also very much like to see the Inquisitor, but more on that later.
Companions: considering concept art and the latest teaser trailer, plus Tevinter Nights stories and new characters, we have an interesting repertoire of new potential companions. A Tevinter mage, an ancient elf (like a temple guardian) or a dalish elf (like Strife), a Nevarran mortalitasi or spirit, Antivan Crows, Lords of Fortune (new faction, kind of like treasure hunters), Qunari lady, maybe an alchemist or shapeshifter, Grey Wardens (possibly a dwarf), a liberated or escaped slave, a Siccari (Tevinter spies/assassins)..even past agents of the Inquisition could return.Ā
Plot: We know Solas wants to take down the Veil. We know thereā€™s two archdemons left, and Grey Wardens are regaining some spotlight in concept art lately. We might have to fight on multiple fronts simultaneously and be strategic about it. Solas might even unleash a double Blight just to keep us distracted while he focus on his own goal, who knows. But many other things are happenig in the margins and all over the place. The Qunari Antaam is having a crisis with some of its members supposedly going rogue, the order theyā€™re so proud of is breaking up, and the whole of Northern Thedas is facing an imminent threat of invasion. Tevinter is still dealing with remnants of the Venatori and might soon be dealing with a slaves rebellion and/or a political and social reform (Magisters Dorian and Maeveris have been working wirh the Lucerni, a group aiming to restore and redeem Tevinter). The Antivan Crows -the de facto rulers of Antiva - may be dealing with a succession crisis, as their First Talon, a powerful feared and respected but old lady, might not be around for much longer and seems her chosen heir has died before his time. Meanwhile in the Anderfells nobodyā€™s heard anything from the Grey Wardensā€™ HQ at Weisshaupt since the end of Inquisition, and as told in the novel Last Flight, the sudden reappearance of griffons may have had something to do with that radio silence. So you see, get ready for another +100 hours long game because BW has plenty of stuff to keep us busy with. But in short, DA4 seems will be about primarily searching, finding, and dealing with Solas. Regardless of what you decided at the Exalted Council in Trespasser, the Inquisition or whatā€™s left of it is most likely the group orchestrating that mission. As it was so clearly stated then, they need new people Solas doesnā€™t know so he canā€™t foresee their actions, so itā€™s possible the DA4 protagonist is a new agent or a third party hired to do what the Inner circle canā€™t due to their familiarity with Solas in the past. But at the same time -and this is assuming we get to find Solas in this game - i definitely think the Inquisitor could easily show up again. No, losing an arm doensā€™t mean theyā€™ve retired forever, prosthetics do exist in Thedas, a world where you can combine dwarven craftmanship with enchantments, seriously, i donā€™t ever want to hear ā€œbut they lost an armā€ ever again as an excuse to write them out. And no, marrying Cullen or joining the Red Jennys is no impediment to join theĀ ā€œStop Solasā€ Squad; the end of Trespasser means something, mainly that this is personal. Be it they loved them as lovers, as friends or ended up hating his guts for using and betraying them, the Inquisitorā€™s relationship with Solas makes this very personal, and so having any other character do that face off would cheapen all of it, all that bittersweet angsty development and expectations of either revenge or closure. That moment should happen between those two. It adds a ton of motivation due to their past historyas well, something a new protagonist would lack entirely.Ā  My personal best hope is for a sort of dual protagonist thing, say we play new protagonist for most of the game but a selected missions or scenes where we play as the Inquisitor once again and take over for key and heart-wrenching dialogue options. My second best hope is for the Inquisitor to show up as playable for the moment we catch up with Solas. My third and final best hope is for the inquisitor to be a sort of advisor but more like new protagonistā€™s boss/employer to whom they report back to and get new missions from. The Inquisitor can be stuck in meetings for the most part of it, i just want to know theyā€™re there, behind a door, super busy but there. A cameo like Hawkeā€™s in Inquisition is the bare miminum i can take, anyhting less than that like a mention in a sidequest description or a footnote in a codex entry would be a totalĀ  injustice.Ā
Romances: Iā€™m open for pretty much anything, as any good BW fan would be. But iā€™d like romances to feel more alive in the sense that they donā€™t abruptly get stuck once you exhaust all related quests and dialogue options. As much as my Adaar liked that spank from the Iron Bull, that it was the only thing they could share after their romance was locked was a bit..meh. I liked Dorianā€™s tho, because his gave one the option to talk a bit, go for a walk, gossip, and sure, it all happened off-screen, and there were limited possibilities, but it was nice and made their relationship feel a bit more real, like they had more to it than kissing and stuff. It happens in most games, once you secure a romanceable companion suddenly you run out of things to do and share with them, and you get stuck with the same 3 lines of dialogue over and over again. There should be a way of solving that.
Side quests: iā€™m ok with fetch quests initially as it is a good way of forcing the player to go out and explore huge maps, but iā€™d also like the fetching to have some meaning other than checking things off a list. I want to explore many ruins, and -canā€™t believe iā€™m actually saying this- i want a Fade quest. Wait! I know what youā€™re thinking but donā€™t kill me just yet, hereā€™s my idea: what if we could visit the Fade at certain locations to witness memories or meet with spirits and recollect information on Solas, his past, his present? Both to understand him better (keep in mind weā€™ll most likely get a new protagonist who isnā€™t familiar with him like we are as players) and try to locate him or predict his next move. It would be i think i great way of having visions of Arlathan in its golden age, maybe seeing some of the other Evanuris, how they interacted with each other and with the elves in their service, what really happened ā€¦i just want that sweet, sweet lore, i need it.
Technical stuff: ok, graphics will be amazing for sure, but i also would really really like: better, more varied and longer hairstyles, PLEASE. Body sliders, itā€™s damn time we get them. Mounts that actually make a difference! Let staves blades make damage in combat, Iā€™M BEGGING HERE. Combined classes, MAGICAL ROGUES! A homebase we can fix up/build on/redecorate as fully as possible (Skyhold was great and i love it to pieces but why were those walls NEVER repaired????) . More casual outfit options, idk i love to dress up my characters, maybe some transmog? A day/night cycle and please i would love to see Thedasā€™ second moon, also weather variations depending on the region. Yes, iā€™m ambitious.
Gameplay: iā€™d like more AI options for companions, but not quite like in DAO, that was too much and i rarely used it. Iā€™m curious how theyā€™ll do combat this time but i know for sure i donā€™t want the kind of combat that has me going almost frame by frame pausing at every second, itā€™s annoying for me. I want large areas like in DAI but with a bit more stuff to see and do although one of my favourite maps is the Hissing Wastes so i wonā€™t complain if we get a literal desert but iā€™d also like it to have secrets hidden around, make me work to find and solve them, i love exploring, i jump and click on EVERYTHING like iā€™m still a kid playing Monkey Island.Ā A companion in concept art seems to be holding what looks like some form of rifle, so iā€™m curious how theyā€™d incorporate that in the game. I know Tevinter has the magics and dwarves have the skill, a firearm is totally within the possibilities in-game without breaking any lore; also super curious what sort of skill trees Crows or Lords of Fortune could have, are they rogues, or warriors, or both??
So far, thatā€™s what i got in my head.Well, most of it anyways, i may have missed something but this post has to end somewhere lol
Whatā€™s in your head? Feel free to share! Have you been thinking on how youā€™ll create your next protagonist? All i can think of is magical rogues and thatĀ  glowing bow was all the hype i needed.

i get that book fans want Rand as main character as he is in the original series but to me, the fact that the writers went "instead of following the Young Prophesized Hero, let's shift the point of view and make the Mysterious Middle-Age Witch-Advisor the main character" is genius. Give me the original point of view. Give me the morally grey, determined, experienced character sacrificing everything for the fate of a stubborn young man that won't trust her. So Iā€™ve been enjoying the Disney vs. DeSantis memes as much as anyone, but like. I do feel like a lot of people who had normal childhoods are missing some context to all this.
I was raised in the Bible Belt in a fairly fundie environment. My parents were reasonably cool about some things, compared to the rest of my family, but they certainly had their issues. But they did let me watch Disney movies, which turned out to be a point of major contention between them and my other relatives.
See, I think some people think this weird fight between Disney and fundies is new. It is very not new. I know that Disneyā€™s attempts at inclusion in their media have been the source of a lot of mockery, but what a lot of people donā€™t understand is that as far as actual company policy goes, Disney has actually been an industry leader for queer rights. Theyā€™ve had policies assuring equal healthcare and partner benefits for queer employees since the early 90s.
Iā€™m not sure how many people reading this right now remember the early 90s, but that was very much not industry standard. It was a big deal when Disney announced that non-married queer partners would be getting the same benefits as the married heterosexual ones.
Like ā€” it went further than just saying that any unmarried partners would be eligible for spousal benefits. It straight-up said that non-same-sex partners would still need to be married to receive spousal benefits, but because same-sex partners couldnā€™t do that, proof that they lived together as an established couple would be enough.
In other words, it put long-term same-sex partners on a higher level than opposite-sex partners who just werenā€™t married yet. It put them on the exact same level as heterosexual married partners.
They werenā€™t the first company ever to do this, but they were super early. And they were certainly the first mainstream ā€œfamily-friendlyā€ company to do it.
Conservatives lost their damn minds.
Protests, boycotts, sermons, the whole nine yards. I canā€™t tell you how many books about the evils of Disney my grandmother tried to get my parents to read when I was a kid.
When we later moved to Florida, I realized just how many queer people work at Disney ā€” because historically speaking, itā€™s been a company that has guaranteed them safety, non-discrimination, and equal rights. Thatā€™s when I became aware of their unofficial ā€œGay Daysā€ and how Christians would show up from all over the country to protest them every year. Apparently my grandmother had been upset about these days for years, but my parents had just kind of ignored her.
Out of curiosity, I ended up reading one of the books my grandmother kept leaving at our house. And friends ā€” itā€™s amazing how similar that (terrible, poorly written) rhetoric was to what people are saying these days. Disney hires gay pedophiles who want to abuse your children. Disney is trying to normalize Satanism in our beautiful, Christian America.Ā
Just tons of conspiracy theories in there that ranged from ā€œa few bad things happened that werenā€™t actually Disneyā€™s fault, but they did happenā€ to ā€œPocahontas is an evil movie, not because it distorts history and misrepresents indigenous life, but because it might teach children respect for nature. Which, as we all know, would cause them all to become Wiccans who believe in climate change.ā€
Like ā€” please, take it from someone who knows. This weird fight between fundies and Disney is not new. This is not Disneyā€™s first (gay) rodeo. These people have always believed that Disney is full of evil gays who are trying to groom and sexually abuse children.
The main difference now is that these beliefs are becoming mainstream. Itā€™s not just conservative pastors who are talking about this. Itā€™s not just church groups showing up to boycott Gay Day. Disney is starting to (reluctantly) say the quiet part out loud, and so are the Republicans. Disney is publicly supporting queer rights and announcing company-supported queer events and the Republican Party is publicly calling them pedophiles and enacting politically driven revenge.
This is important, because while this fight has always been important in the history of queer rights, it is now being magnified. The precedent that a fight like this could set is staggering. For better or for worse, we live in a corporation-driven country. I donā€™t like it any more than you do, and Iā€™m not about to defend most of Disneyā€™s business practices. But we do live in a nation where rights are largely tied to corporate approval, and the fact that we might be entering an age where even the most powerful corporations in the country are being banned from speaking out in favor of rights for marginalized peopleā€¦ thatā€™s genuinely scary.
Likeā€¦ Iā€™ll just ask you this. Where do you think weļæ½ļæ½d be now, in 2023, if Disney had been prevented from promising its employees equal benefits in 1994? That was almost thirty years ago, and look how far things have come. When I looked up news articles for this post from that era, even then journalists, activists, and fundie church leaders were all talking about how a company of Disneyā€™s prominence throwing their weight behind this movement could lead to the normalization of equal protections in this country.
The idea of it scared and thrilled people in equal parts even then. It still scares and thrills them now.
I keep seeing people say ā€œI need them both to lose!ā€ and I get it, I do. Disney has for sure done a lot of shit over the years. But I am begging you as a queer exvangelical to understand that no. You need Disney to win. You need Disney to wipe the fucking floor with these people.
Right now, this isnā€™t just a fight between a giant corporation and Ron DeSantis. This is a fight about the right of corporations to support marginalized groups. Itā€™s a fight that ensures that companies like Disney still can offer benefits that a discriminatory government does not provide. It ensures that businesses much smaller than Disney can support activism.
Hell, it ensures that you can support activism.
The fight between weird Christian conspiracy theorists and Disney is not new, because the fight to prevent any tiny victory for marginalized groups is not new. The fight against the normalization of othered groups is not new.
Thatā€™s what theyā€™re most afraid of. That each incremental victory will start to make marginalized groups feel safer, that each incremental victory will start to turn the tide of public opinion, that each incremental victory will eventually lead to sweeping law reform.
Theyā€™re afraid that they wonā€™t be able to legally discriminate against us anymore.
So guys! Please. This fight, while hilarious, is also so fucking important. I am begging you to understand how old this fight is. These people always play the long game. They did it with Roe and theyā€™re doing it with Disney.
We have! To keep! Pushing back!

i also wanna yell about gwendoline christieā€™s performance as lucifer because sheā€™s just astonishingly good. so many people approach the role emphasizing the fallen aspect of the fallen angel, and she goes out of her way to emphasize that sheā€™s a fallen angel. the way she treats dream with the utmost hospitality coated in poison, and fucks him over as much as she can with the same hollow pleasant smile on her face. the way she canā€™t outdo dreamā€™sĀ ā€œI am hopeā€ because to kill hope would be to kill her own hopes of one day going home. the way she literally gasps with tears in her eyes when dream calls her on that. and when the mask finally drops, and she tells him in no uncertain terms that one day, Hell will destroy him, itā€™s fucking personal and that sheā€™ll be holding the knife herself. i canā€™t, honestly. give her all the awards.
