Seems much easier to capture the form of someone I know well. Brain knows the mapping of familiar shapes and perhaps feeling at ease and less self conscious. Mommy mommy there's a dragon in that corner! I keep hearing... I first clapped eyes on Mr Leo in an Artscape production of Boy meets Boy probably in the early 90's. Etherial and androgynous he captivated my attention. Using his body and light waves of movements he glided between performance and making like a wise sorcerer manifests magic. 'Ou witch doctor' as the South African expression goes might sum up his energy. Priveledged to understudy such a majestic performance in Sun City's 1998 show Baletsatsi, Craig used his other worldly talents conjuring the spirit of Mobisi. Like a guardian angel throughout my journey I have always been inspired by and somewhat in awe of Craig's presence and ability to switch between art, design, hair, make up and performance with none of the lovey type ego usually associated with theatre people. Whilst making these sketches he tells me he rarely identifies with actors, making more connection with the makers and technicians. A true artist. Result = crushingly proud grandma 🦄
