Another #Xmen drawing from my childhood portfolio, drawn in Junior High. #Marvel splash pages were my favorite thing to draw back then. This one was a study of a Jim Lee cover. #retireddrawings https://www.instagram.com/p/B5ybaV4Dv8_/?igshid=odj6uotmwe5j

Drew this poster of the #Xmen back in junior high, when #Marvel comics and Jim Lee fueled my imagination. Years later I helped shape the franchise a touch when I joined the 'Days of Future Past' previs team. https://www.instagram.com/p/B5yWOyWDb5X/?igshid=yo39riytor3u

Today's retired drawing: face studies of the late comedian George Carlin, for a collaboration I developed for a while to make a 3D Animation of his classic "Seven Dirty Words." I like to do each drawing in an exaggerated caricature to see if it uncovers new aspects of his anatomy. It can be more useful than doing several nearly identical studies. #georgecarlin (at Los Angeles, California) https://www.instagram.com/p/B41XXu5jWFa/?igshid=zcncja3b9tng

Part of why I'm retiring old drawings by uploading them to social media is to light a spark for new creations, like today's 15 min lunch sketch of Seattle Seahawks QB Russell Wilson. This one was done in my "300 Heads" sketchbook. (at Los Angeles) https://www.instagram.com/p/B4yDTmkDWS9/?igshid=1pjck8qlijvul

Going through some old sketchbooks to find pieces worth keeping. This high school sketch was done by request for Mike Rinehart: Boba Fett vs. Maverick. Hope fans of #TheMandalorian enjoy it too. https://www.instagram.com/p/B4qu0hVDMqS/?igshid=aynwxasge86v

Oil piece way back from 2009. This one’s for the Radiohead fans. Somehow I lost track of this panel after a few moves, but at least I was able to get a clear shot of it for the website.

TBT this week is old artwork. Unused ‘spec’ Illustrations for a friend’s book, created in 2011. Some revisions were requested, so I made other angles for the same moment.

Pages 9-11 of the “Grandpa” mini-comic I made for the “Making Mini-Comics” class at (the now closed) Meltdown Comics in LA, taught by Jim Higgins. The story was based on a real nightmare I had, and I wrote the rest as fiction. Pages 1-10 are in an earlier post of mine here on Tumblr.

Pages 1-8 of the “Grandpa” mini-comic I made back in Spring of 2011, via the making mini-comics class at the (now closed) Meltdown Comics in LA, taught by Jim Higgins. The story is based on a real nightmare I had after my Grandfather died (the rest is fiction). I I’ll have a follow-up post with the remaining pages.

Cleaning up some space on my desktop, and thought I’d throw these guys and their works-in-progress pictures up on my Tumblr page for the first time. They were part of a giclee print series I did back in 2011 on my first cintiq. Memories...

For #StarWarsDay this is that long-promised WIP for last year’s “Big Trouble in Little Corellia” piece. #Maythe4th be with you, #StarWars fans.
Layer 1: original Big Trouble poster
Layer 2: slap-comp of main references. I tried a more cluttered composition with more characters from the movie, but decided against it. Lando’s picture came from a Lego package design that was leaked early on. I had to wait for the slow trickle of photos and articles to reveal what characters would be used, and what their costumes would look like. Normally I try to avoid trailers and spoilers for Star Wars movies, but working on this piece meant I had to stay more closely tuned and absorb everything I could find.
Layer 3: linework and whites pass #1. Adding the whites helped to keep track of how much of the poster I was actually reimagining. I also repainted Solo’s left hand to more properly match the scale.
Layer 4: Han Solo pass. I like working on the most important character first. He would be the focal point.
Layer 5: gang pass. I used a still from the movie as an initial reference for them, but ended up repainting them all in poses that I preferred.
Layer 6: lines/whites pass. Subtle changes to character expressions.
Layer 7: background pass. Covering the semi-truck would need something huge, so I used a Star Destroyer. I liked the TIEs in the top right, but didn’t end up keeping them.
Layer 8: the “attack plan”: prioritizing which areas to paint
Layer 9: jacket painting, with reference from EW magazine
Layer 10: more Han painting, this time making sure my colors are in line with the original reference.
Layer 11: values pass. This is made harder by painting on a white surface. If I had to do it over again, I might have chosen a grey palate like I’ve seen many oil painters do.
Layer 12: first color pass, keeping the Big Trouble poster handy.
Layer 13: color refinements
Layer 14: airbrush tinting. Focusing on setting certain areas back behind others.
Layer 15: fx pass (tried to preserve the cool light flares from the David Lo Pan character), final composition adjustments to match the Big Trouble poster design

Productive movie going experience today. Saw Endgame and the Star Wars trailer on the right screen, and took a picture with the displays of two movies I worked on that come out soon (Detective Pikachu was the other). https://www.instagram.com/p/BxEOjY9lBHY/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=fib3xrddbntq
