It’s no surprise that famed postmodern architect Rem Koolhaas has called Baghdad-born, Pritzker-prize-winning architect Zaha Hadid “a planet in her own inimitable orbit.” To Frank Gehry she’s a “force of nature.” In sum, she has an all-encompassing, forceful worldview that has helped her overcome obstacles in her chosen profession: namely, that she’s an Arab female in an industry governed by white men.

Ninety-nine replica animals constructed with precise attention to detail surround a watering hole. Both predator and prey form one harmonious ring with a single aim—survival. Tigers, giraffes, and pandas all drinking together continue Guo-Qiang’s fixation on the circle of life. They conjure sentiments of living together on one planet, and lure his work back down from the heavens into an earthly realm.

It was also a great opportunity to see the rise of Modern China from the ground level. There’s a marked difference every time I return to China. Everything is constantly in flux. Everything from food to music to even how people respond to you as a black man walking down the street. It’s a constant source of anxiety because you never know what’s going to be waiting for you when you return.

"Street casting in America is a lot different than street casting in countries outside of the industrial complex. In New York or Los Angeles, you’ll stop people in the streets, and they have this kind of, “Well, of course you found me” moment, you know? It almost feels like, they were waiting for their moment of fifteen minutes of fame, there is this kind of post-Paris-Hilton, just-add-water, celebrity moment."
