Moe, the family beagle, died at age 13, leaving some heartache in the home of Mary and Roberto Westbrook. They live in Norfolk’s Colonial Place with their 3-½-year-old son, Luke — who keeps asking if his dog is coming back.

One day, Luke asks to write a letter to Moe. Doing so becomes a bit of a mom-and-son ritual — crayon-filled sessions that seem like good medicine.

The usual message: “I miss you. Hope you’re having fun in doggie heaven.”

The letters — addressed to Moe Westbrook on Cloud One — are carried out to the mailbox, then retrieved by Mary after her son falls asleep.

A few weeks ago, she forgot to fish one out. The next morning, it disappeared with her mailman.

“I figured someone would just throw it away once it got to the post office,” Mary said. “It didn’t even have a stamp.”

But this week, an answer appeared in the Westbrook mailbox. Printed on paper marked with a tiny “USPS” at the bottom, it was addressed to Luke from Moe:

“I’m in Doggie Heaven. I play all day. I am happy. Thank you 4 being my friend. I wuv you Luke.” [x]
