This temple is patronized by saints, poets and it is a thousand-year-old monument. Prominent among them are Arunagirinathar, Manickavasagar, Sundarar, Sambamdar, and Appar. Shiva devotees have a good reputation for this temple as Arunachalaeswar prayed in the form of fire, a fire composed of the basic elements of the universe. God here is also called Annamalaiyar where “anna” means powerful in Tamil and “malai” means hills. As god is powerful, the almighty is compared to hills.
