Hellenic Deities: Aphrodite
🌹 Goddess of love, beauty, sex/desire, fertility and war
🌹 Symbols: Roses, myrtle, the ocean, seashells, pearls, the beach, apples, mirror, honey
🌹 Sacred animals: Swans, bees, doves
🌹 Colors: Pink and red
🌹 Crystals: Rose quartz, aquamarine, aragonite
🌹 Most Important Myths:
-Birth from Uranus’ severed genitals and the sea foam
-Arranged marriage to Hephaestus
-The exposure of her affair with Ares
-Judgment of Paris
-Death of Adonis
-Seduction of Anchises
Tumblr media
🌹 “Don’t take the myths literally” understanding:
Aphrodite is not envious, petty or vindictive. She is an incredibly loving, warm being. She also does not envy anyone because she doesn’t need to. She’s Aphrodite! Comparing someone to her, beauty-wise, will not anger her. But, she wants you to see your own beauty through her, instead of trying to make hers rub off on you. She does insist on great respect and has a fierce side that should not be underestimated. Yet, she is absolutely delightful.
It is also not exactly that she was horribly “unfaithful” to her husband. She was forced into a loveless marriage and then actually found love. She just found it elsewhere and was shamed for it. That story is less about infidelity and more about how you can’t force love that isn’t working and have to follow your heart, even if that has consequences
🌹 Devotional acts: Self-care of any kind (skincare, salon trip, spa day), a long hot bath (with bath salts/essential oils/bath bombs, etc), shopping, putting a nice outfit together, doing your makeup, writing romantic poetry or love songs, writing yourself a love letter, watching a romantic movie, sexual pleasure (either alone or with a partner), buying yourself flowers (especially roses) or chocolates, doing self-love affirmations in the mirror
🌹 Assistance and Support:
-Obviously, Aphrodite is a huge help in romantic matters. But, it may not be the help that you are expecting. If you are yearning for or with someone who isn’t good for you, she is notorious for imploding or ending such situations. She will wake you up to what is really going on. Aphrodite wants you to actually be happy in love, not to invest in or stick to what you think will make you happy but really isn’t. Yes, she can also help you manifest the right person. You just need to do the inner work and healing required to align with that kind of relationship.
-She also is well-known for helping people when it comes to self-love and self-esteem, especially those who are more feminine. She will push you to improve your body image, feel more confident in your skin, see your beauty and attractiveness, and, above all, to know your worth
This is the only way I have found she can be a bit strict or “tough love”. As you build a bond with her, she will not tolerate you being down on yourself or accepting less than you deserve. But, this comes from a place of affection and love
-Aphrodite can also improve your relationship with sex. She encourages sex positivity, teaching you to fully embrace your pleasure, rid yourself of shame, and feel comfortable in your sensuality
-She also can teach you the power and the value of femininity. If you are a more feminine individual, she will encourage you to embrace that and own it, regardless of society’s negative ideas about femininity. If you’re more masculine, she will get you to do the same, to accept your feminine side without fear
-She can be called on when doing glamour magic, love magic, sex magic, and even earth magic, as she is a fertility goddess
🌹 Additional Note
-It is best to work with her on Friday, as this is the day she rules. You can and should, of course, work with her any day but this will be the most “charged” day in terms of energy

“Give Aphrodite a red candle!” “Give her a blue candle!” Give her a candle of your favorite color. Tell her why you love it so much; is it just comforting or does it symbolize something to you? When you see that candle you’ll think “aw I love that color!” That’s literally what some of her epithets personify her as, that feeling of love and warmth! Just an idea idk 🤷‍♀️

Everyday Ways I Honour Aphrodite
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
(NSFW warning)
🌹Roses, roses, roses. Rose soap, rose lip balm, rose hand cream, rose lotion, rose perfume, rose oil on my pillow before falling asleep, rose candles, rose incense, roses in my garden, rosewater toner, rose face mist, rose shower gel, dried roses in the bath... Just roses everywhere you can fit them.
🌹Reading romantic books and poetry, watching romance films
🌹 Reading books and poetry about Aphrodite
🌹Making myself feel beautiful with pretty jewellery and makeup. Even just a swipe of tinted lip balm boosts my confidence (I use French Girl Rose Noir). I try to wear at least a little bit of makeup or jewellery daily, even if it's just a pair of studs or a subtle lipstick
🌹 Even if I'm just staying at home all day I'll spray perfume and put on jewellery and do lipstick just to feel sensual while I'm lounging around playing Animal Crossing (currently wearing a comfy embroidered nightie, small gold hoops, a pretty bracelet and a little bit of YSL Orange Perfecto lipstick as I write this)
🌹 Embracing my sensuality. Swaying my hips, feeling the softness of my body, dancing freely, engaging in self-pleasure, taking nudes, trying to unlearn the shame associated with sexuality from my upbringing. I don't watch porn often as I find most of it unhealthy and misogynistic (I only like this one random Japanese couple's channel and some vintage and Korean softcore), but I enjoy toys (my favourite is the rose), erotic literature, erotic film, audio porn (usually in other languages because I find a lot of dirty talk just makes me cringe but I still get enjoyment out of hearing little moans and silky low voices so I get that and avoid secondhand embarrassment from bad dirty talk by listening to it in languages I don't understand), and erotic fine art.
🌹 I try to get really comfortable when I'm engaged in self love. Lipstick and perfume on, hair styled, lingerie or nightie that makes me feel sexy, a candle lit or rose, ylang ylang and jasmine oil in my diffuser, soft music playing. Then I'll position myself comfortably, and stroke my thighs, tease my nipples, squeeze my breasts, lick my juices off my fingers and use it like a lipstick, painting my lips and nipples or using it to lightly lubricate my clitoris. Running my hands all over my belly, thighs and breasts, experimenting with different types of pressure and stimulation. Just luxuriating in the sensual feelings I can bring to my beautiful female body.
🌹 Wearing jewellery with seashells, pearls, emerald, ruby, bronze, copper, gold, jade, garnet and iridescent beads
🌹 Enjoying apples, honey, figs, pomegranates, strawberries, raspberries, olives, lettuce, rosewater and chocolate. I like buying Guylian chocolates as they're seashell shaped, but any chocolate will do (my favourite chocolate bar to buy is white chocolate with strawberries). I also like foods that you can taste the rosewater in like rose macarons and Turkish delight.
🌹 Making foods with ingredients she likes, like honey cakes, Persian rose love spell cookies, rosewater nougat, Persian love cake, baklava, cornes de gazelle, mhencha, etc... I mostly stick to Mediterranean, North African, Arab and Persian recipes, as they commonly use ingredients like rosewater, honey, pomegranates, and figs.
🌹 Carrying rose quartz in my pocket and keeping rose quartz under my pillow
🌹 I use a rose quartz roller to massage oil into my face
🌹 I keep a mini Venus de Milo statue and a swan trinket box on my bedside table
🌹 Drinking a drink made up of honey, cinnamon, milk and hot water at night to relax
🌹 Wearing pretty lingerie under my clothes, even if it's a basic outfit
🌹 I often fall asleep to the sound of ocean waves
🌹 Gold highlighter swept on my cheeks and body shimmer on my collarbones, reflecting light like sun rays on the ocean
🌹 Doing little offerings, like spritzing her statue with perfume, or offering up a portion of food I'm eating that I think she'd like
🌹 Lighting incense in scents like myrrh, frankincense, rose, vanilla, cinnamon, ginger and jasmine
🌹 Drawing myself relaxing baths with fragrant oils and salts
🌹 Reading hymns, Sappho's poetry, and listening to Athanati Afroditi
🌹 Listening to music that's romantic or sensual (this is my playlist)
🌹 Carrying a hand mirror and admiring myself as I check my makeup
🌹 Adding honey to tea
🌹 Writing letters and poetry about love and beauty
🌹Admiring women I find beautiful without jealousy or resentment, just appreciation
🌹Using these emojis: 🌹🦢🌊🪞🍎❤️💘💗💕💋🕊️🫒💄
🌹 Wearing pink, red, aqua, and seafoam green
🌹 Being consistent in self care. No matter how low my spoons are, unless I'm so dog-tired I end up falling asleep on the couch at 8pm, I force myself to do my evening skincare routine - cleansing, toning, eye cream, moisturiser, oil. And I always feel better for it even if I was exhausted before. Much smaller but I'm also consistent in oiling the ends of my hair daily and spraying perfume before bed. And I keep up with getting my hair done and brows waxed every three months without fail.
🌹 Doing exercises that make me feel sensual. I'm really lazy tbh but I push myself because I know Aphrodite would want me to take care of my body. I pick exercises that make me feel good and desirable, like yoga flow, belly dance, and exercises that target my womanly attributes.
🌹 Giving compliments!
🌹 Doing a big self care day every Friday (the day associated with her). Hot oil hair treatment, foot soak and exfoliation, removing old nail polish and buffing and filing nails, face mask, teeth whitening....
🌹 Going to the pond in winter and admiring the swans
🌹 Going to an art gallery in my city just to look at the painting Venus and Cupid (Day) by Fragonard
🌹 Sleeping on silk sheets as they feel sensual (they're also good for your hair and skin)
🌹 Making my own diffusers and cosmetics from natural, aphrodisiac products. Homemade bath salt with rose petals and pink salt, homemade lip mask with olive oil and rose oil, and adding oil of rose, jasmine, sandalwood, and cinnamon to a diffuser as I find these scents stimulating and sensual.
🌹 And of course, thanking Lady Aphrodite every day.

Absolutely be political in your worship.
Aphrodite isn't called Pandemos (of All People) so you can sit around and let the big names capitalise love and serve it only to those who can afford to pay past the persecution. Hermes isn't called Oeopolus (Shepherd) so you can sit around and let a bunch of power-hungry wolves lead a flock of influencable sheep. Apollo isn't called Paean (Healer) so you can sit around while wealthy corporations serve healthcare only to those who can afford not to die. Athena isn't called Ambulia (Counsellor) so you can sit around while the people are being fed propaganda against each other to divert them from the real enemy at the top. Dionysus isn't called Eleuthereus (the Liberator) so you can sit around while freedom is only granted to those whose skins have the acceptable colour while the others die in chains. Zeus isn't called Xenios (of the Foreigners) so you can sit around while the borders are closed to those who need it and only open to those who can give back the money.
The Gods stand with the oppressed, and so should you.

im trying to incorporate my worship more in my day to day routine (bcs i cant rlly do big rituals or celebrations due to family n being closeted) so do you have any recommendations for activities i could devote to certain gods? or like tips on how to do so?
i worship athena, aphrodite and apollon mainly btw, so anything related to Them specifically would be nice! thank you :]
Khaire, Nonny!
Here's a list I came up with because it's easier for me to keep track of:
Aphrodite: Taking showers (I use rose-scented washes), taking a self-care bath, nourishing yourself with food or water, taking time out of your day to be kind to yourself, smiling at your reflection, giving your reflection compliments, giving compliments to strangers, engaging in random acts of kindness, wearing devotional jewelry, listening to a playlist with songs that remind you of her, being kind to your body, being gentle with yourself when you're struggling, taking time to relax after a long day (even just a little bit), wearing an outfit you dedicate to her, planning your outfits ahead of time, take time to ground yourself each day (if you can), spending time with loved ones, going out with friends, talking to loved ones, relying on others for help when needed, lending your help to someone who is struggling, practice showing yourself the same kindness you share with others
Apollon: Engaging in anything related to personal hygiene, taking your medications (if you have them), using herbs to help with mild maladies (like headaches and stomach aches; using medications is also ok!), taking a daily walk/getting in some daily movement, eating s delicious meal that you made for yourself, listening to a playlist with songs that remind you of him, wearing devotional jewelry, dancing to music, singing to music, taking time to write a short poem each day, basking in the warmth of the sunlight, reading a book, going out of your way to learn more about a topic, practicing divination, creating or working on an art piece, working on having a healthier sleep schedule (going to bed at a reasonable time), doing your homework/studying, working on any form of self-improvement, getting curious about yourself and who you are in any sense (making lists about yourself, asking yourself questions, etc.), engaging with media from your childhood
Athena: Taking a daily walk/getting in some daily movement, working out (if you can; this can be in any sense), slowly embracing more nuance into your life, going out of your way to seek knowledge, give advice to a loved one, practice taking your own advice, practice listening to yourself/your gut more often, take time to reflect on your accomplishments/strengths each day, listening to a playlist with songs that remind you of her, wearing devotional jewelry, engaging in creative hobbies (especially knitting, weaving, crocheting, etc.)engaging with good world/country news, stating updated on happenings in your country/the world, practice standing up/advocating for yourself, caring for your body's physical needs (food, water, sleep, etc.), doing your homework/studying, setting firm boundaries with others/reflecting on what your boundaries are, engaging with media you love, taking set time away from screens, practice growing s thicker skin to things people say
-
Of course, something you can do for all of them is pray to them at night or in the morning - just a quick prayer of acknowledgement, it doesn't have to be fancy. You can rotate through whom you pray to as well, if having a schedule is helpful to you. Hope these suggestions help! Take care, Nonny, and may the gods watch over you, if you wish them to. 🧡

THANATOS: AN INFODUMP
Thanatos (Θανατος) known to the romans as Mors is the god or daimon (personified spirit) of non-violent death. He is a chthonic deity residing in the underworld.
Tumblr media
This post covers his family, symbols, notable myths, epithets, orphic hymn, and my favourite passages about him.
Tumblr media
PARENTAGE AND SIBLINGS
His parentage and family can be understood through Hesiod’s Theogony (A Greek epic written in the 8th or 7th B.C)
And Nyx (Night) bare hateful Moros (Doom) and black Ker (Violent Death) and Thanatos (Death), and she bare Hypnos (Sleep) and the tribe of Oneiroi (Dreams). And again the goddess murky Nyx, though she lay with none, bare Momos (Blame) and painful Oizys (Misery), and the Hesperides . . . Also she bare the Moirai (Moirae, Fates) and the ruthless avenging Keres (Death-Fates) . . . Also deadly Nyx bare Nemesis (Envy) to afflict mortal men, and after her, Apate (Deceit) and Philotes (Friendship) and hateful Geras (Old Age) and hard-hearted Eris (Strife).
— Parents: Nyx with no father (Roman versions of his birth name Erebus the father)
— Siblings:
Apate (deceit)
Eris (strife)
Geras (old age)
Hesperides (nymphs of the evening)
Hypnos (sleep) Ker (violent death)
Keres (death-fates)
Moirai (fates)
Momos (blame)
Moros (doom)
Nemesis (retribution)
Oizys (misery)
Oneiroi (dreams)
Philotes (friendship)
Tumblr media
SYMBOLS AND APPEARANCE
SYMBOLS
— inverted torch → represents a life being extinguished
— butterfly → symbolises the soul
— sword → indicates his authority to sever the thread of life
— poppies → as a symbol of eternal sleep
— wreath → suggesting eternity, or the cyclical nature of life and death
APPEARANCE
Greek vase paintings depicted him as a winged, older man with a beard and rarely as a young, beardless youth.
Roman sculptures portrayed him as a youth holding an inverted torch and a wreath or butterfly
Tumblr media
NOTABLE MYTHS
— THANATOS AND THE BODY OF SARPEDON
As seen in the Iliad, Thanatos and Hypnos are tasked to carry the body of Sarpedon away from the battlefield to Lycia so his brothers and countrymen can give him a respectful burial.
Homer, Iliad 16. 453 ff (trans. Lattimore) (Greek epic C8th B.C.) : "[Hera speaks to Zeus about the approaching death of his son Sarpedon :] ‘But after the soul and the years of his life have left him [Sarpedon], then send Thanatos (Death) to carry him away, and Hypnos (Sleep), who is painless, until they come with him to the countryside of broad Lykia (Lycia) where his brothers and countrymen shall give him due burial with tomb and gravestone.’"
Homer, Iliad 16. 681 ff : "Then [Apollon] gave him [Sarpedon] into the charge of swift messengers to carry him, of Hypnos (Sleep) and Thanatos (Death), who are twin brothers, and these two presently laid him down within the rich countryside of broad Lykia (Lycia)."
— THE CAPTURE OF THANATOS BY SISYPHUS
Sisyphus was the (possibly) founder and king of Corinth and was known as ‘the craftiest on men’ in texts by Homer. In the myth, Thanatos was sent to carry Sisyphus into the underworld. Upon Thanatos’ arrival, Sisyphus who was hiding chained him and in doing do, suspended death across the entire world. Thanatos was later freed by Ares who had noticed an absence of death from the battlefield
Alcaeus, Fragment 38a (trans. Campbell, Vol. Greek Lyric I) (Greek lyric C6th B.C.) : "King Sisyphos (Sisyphus), son of Aiolos (Aeolus), wisest of men, supposed that he was master of Thanatos (Death); but despite his cunning he crossed eddying Akheron (Acheron) twice at at fate's command."
Aeschylus, Sisyphus the Runaway (lost play) (Greek tragedy C5th B.C.) : Weir Smyth (L.C.L.) quotes from Pherecydes, a C5th B.C. mythographer, in his discussion of the plot of this lost play: "The drama was satyric; its theme, the escape from Haides of the crafty Korinthian king. According to the fabulous story told by Pherekydes (Frag. 78 in Müller,Fragmenta Historicum Graecorum) Sisyphos made known to Asopos that it was Zeus who had carried off his daughter Aigina; in punishment for which offence the god sent Thanatos (Death) against the babbler; but Sisyphos bound Thanatos (Death) fast, so that men ceased to die, until Ares came to the rescue, released Thanatos, and gave Sisyphos into his power."
— THANATOS WRESTLED BY HERACLES
In the Euripides, a Greek tragedy written in the 5th C B.C. Thanatos is wrestled by Heracles to save the life of Alkestis. Heracles does this to repay Admetos, Alklestis’
Euripides, Alcestis 839 ff : "Herakles : I must save this woman who has died so lately, bring Alkestis back to live in this house and pay Admetos all the kindness that I owe. I must go there [to the funeral at the graveside] and watch for Thanatos (Death) of the black robes (melampeplos), master of dead men (anax nekrôn), and I think I shall find him drinking the blood of slaughtered beasts beside the grave. Then, if I can break suddenly from my hiding place, catch him, and hold him in the circle of these arms, there is no way he will be able to break my hold on his bruised ribs, until he gives the woman up to me. But if I miss my quarry, if he does not come to the clotted offering, I must go down, I must ask Kore (Core, the Maiden) [Persephone] and the Master (Anax) [Haides] in the sunless homes of those below (domos anêlios)."
Tumblr media
EPITHETS
Greek
- Paean -> the healing (delivers men from the pains and sorrows of life)
- Melampeplos -> of the black robes
- Anax Nekron -> master of dead men
English (these are ones I've derived from text so partial upg)
- insatiable
- dreadful/dreaded one
- awful god
- with a heart of iron
- without mercy
Latin
- Acherontis - inflicter of Acheron (woe)
Tumblr media
ORPHIC HYMN
The Fumigation from Manna. Hear me, O Death [Thanatos], whose empire unconfined, extends to mortal tribes of every kind. On thee, the portion of our time depends, whose absence lengthens life, whose presence ends. Thy sleep perpetual bursts the vivid folds, by which the soul, attracting body holds: Common to all of every sex and age, for nought escapes thy all-destructive rage; Not youth itself thy clemency can gain, vigorous and strong, by thee untimely slain. In thee, the end of nature's works is known, in thee, all judgment is absolved alone: No suppliant arts thy dreadful rage control, no vows revoke the purpose of thy soul; O blessed power regard my ardent prayer, and human life to age abundant spare.
Tumblr media
MY FAVOURITE MISC. COLLECTION OF TEXTS
Hesiod, Theogony 758 ff (trans. Evelyn-White) (Greek epic C8th or C7th B.C.) : . . . These are Hypnos (Sleep) and Thanatos (Death), dread divinities. Never upon them does Helios, the shining sun, cast the light of his eye-beams, neither when he goes up the sky nor comes down from it. One of these [Hypnos], across the earth and the wide sea-ridges, goes his way quietly back and forth, and is kind to mortals, but the heart of the other one [Thanatos] is iron, and brazen feelings without pity are inside his breast."
Aeschylus, Fragment 82 Niobe (from Stobaeus, Anthology 4. 51. 1) (trans. Weir Smyth) (Greek tragedy C5th B.C.) : "For, alone of gods, Thanatos (Death) loves not gifts; no, not by sacrifice, nor by libation, canst thou aught avail with him; he hath no altar nor hath he hymn of praise; from him, alone of gods, Peitho (Persuasion) stands aloof."
Aeschylus, Fragment 141 Philoctetes (from Stobaeus, Anthology 4. 52. 32) : "[The wounded Philoktetes (Philoctetes) laments :] ‘O Death (thanatos), the healer (paian), reject me not, but come! For thou alone art the mediciner of ills incurable, and no pain layeth hold on the dead.’"

Have compassion towards yourself; forgive your past mistakes

I'll likely add more to this list! This is a list of discreet ways to worship Thanatos. Take care, everyone! I hope this is helpful. 🩵

Even if you're not a beginner, reading about the deities you worship can be considered a devotional act!!!
Also, just like the title says, if you worship the Greek Gods, you are a Hellenic Pagan or Hellenic Polytheist. You are not a Hellenist, Hellenistic Pagan, Hellenistic Polytheist, Hellenic, or Hellenistic. Please use the proper terminology!!!!!!!!!!
I have a few devotional playlists on my Spotify account (they're linked on my pinned post) but if you'd like to request one, feel free to do so and I'll work on it.

I have made frequent mistakes, as people do. And I will continue to make them. To any and all affected, I sincerely apologize.
I've decided that will all that's happened and all that was tied to my previous name, it was time for a rebrand to move forward into a new direction. I ask that no one associated with the past dramas mention me nor my new account name, and we all go our separate ways ♡

SYMBOLS AND APPEARANCE
SYMBOLS
— inverted torch → represents a life being extinguished
— butterfly → symbolises the soul
— sword → indicates his authority to sever the thread of life
— poppies → as a symbol of eternal sleep
— wreath → suggesting eternity, or the cyclical nature of life and death
APPEARANCE
Greek vase paintings depicted him as a winged, older man with a beard and rarely as a young, beardless youth.
Roman sculptures portrayed him as a youth holding an inverted torch and a wreath or butterfly

"A Voice from Gaza… A Cry for Help"
Hello, I’m Saja from Gaza 🇵🇸💔 I’m writing to you today during one of the hardest moments of my life… For months, we’ve been living under the fire of war 💣. The bombing never stops, and death follows us everywhere 🕊️. Destruction has become a daily scene in our lives 🏚️.
But war is not our only enemy… Prices have skyrocketed 💸🔥, and everything has become unaffordable. A loaf of bread 🍞, a box of milk 🥛, a bottle of water 🚰… have all become distant dreams. Even the most basic needs are no longer within reach. We survive on so little, trying to hold on despite the pain 😔.
My home is no longer the same 🏠❌, our lives have changed, and safety has vanished. My children no longer know peaceful sleep or full meals 🛏️🍽️. Every day brings a new danger, and every night we pray just to survive one more day 🙏.
Tumblr media
This is a picture of my home after the bombing… Our dreams turned to rubble. 🧱💔
Today, I am asking you for a helping hand 🤝, a message of support 📣, a kind word 💬, or any contribution, no matter how small 💖. Any support — big or small — makes a real difference in our lives 🌟.
If you’re unable to donate, please help by sharing or reblogging this post 🔁. My voice may not reach far, but with your help, it can reach those who can make a difference 🌍✨.
Thank you from the bottom of my heart to everyone who reads and cares ❤️. Your presence gives hope in a time where we’ve lost almost everything 🌹.
