There is something so beautiful and sweet to me about the fact that Thanatos is the god of peaceful death.
When I die, I want Death to greet me as an old, childhood friend - unknown yet so familiar, intimidating yet so comforting. I want Death to take me gently by the hand, whisper in my ear, "It'll be alright," and help me stand to my feet as I walk towards a new life - a different kind of life - in a place I may have seen in a dream once.
I hope Thanatos greets me, in my final moments, with the softness and sweetness of an old friend. To me, that is peaceful. And it's so beautiful that he is so willing to provide such comforts to humans in their official transition from one plane of existence to the next. How kind, how compassionate, how admirable.
Death is a friend, in the end, and he smiles softly as he takes your hand.
So we all know that deities show up looking different for different people, but Hypnos has always looked the same to me every time I see him.
Tall, slightly tanned. Long white, curly hair. Only one head wing, not sure why. Freckled, but in the shape of stars. Golden eyes with eyebags. Fairly young, like 20s looking. He wears one shoulder robes, white or purple. He usually has a crown of poppies but sometimes it’s an eye mask. Sometimes he has a blanket over his shoulders like a cloak and of course bunny slippers. He always looks ready for bed, unsurprisingly.
He sounds very quiet, soft spoken and never raises his voice. Gentle on pitch, pretty androgynous. In fact he’s just androgynous in general.
I don’t work with Thanatos, but I have an image of him I’m assuming from Hypnos. Since the two are so closely linked. He looks very similar, obviously since they’re twins. But he’s paler, his hair is straighter and his face is usually obscured by a hood. I’ve never heard him speak, I just vaguely know what he looks like. Same eyes, similar height. Although Thanatos seems more… skeletal? Like he’s got sharper cheekbones and his hands are kind of boney. I’d assume because you know, death.
Never seen Nyx, Morpheus etc. although I would like to. Just out of sheer curiosity about what they look like to me.
okay i actually finished some other user boxes (that i still don't know if they're a thing anymore) but! you're free to use them, just say Aterios made them.
i'm open to making these under request, just send me an ask with the deity you'd like a box for!! please be nice, too.
gods in this post: Hades, Persephone, Thanatos, Hypnos, Hekate, Helios, Selene, Asteria, Eros & Nyx.
Every day I am in awe of how much the gods love us.Every day I remind myself of how many things the gods have gifted us because of their immense love.
Lady Gaia's gift is this planet, where we live, where we make memories, where we see all the beauties of the nature.Without her,we would not be here.
Lady Demeter's gifts to mankind are the soil and agriculture, from which we get food.Without them,we would starve and die.
Lord Ares' gifts are strength and courage.Without them,we would not have the strength to live.
Lady Persephone's gifts are the possibilities to communicate with your loved ones that have passed away and also plants.Without them,we would not be able to see if our loved ones are okay wherever they are and without plants, some animals would die.
Lord Thanatos' gift is eternal peace.Without him,we would have to bear and see all these atrocities in this world.
Lady Eris' gift is the posibility to cut ties with toxic people.Without her, there would be more situations of abuse.
These are some examples. There are more things to say, because there are a lot of gods, but you get the idea. This is just a reminder that the gods do truly cherish us and want the best for us.
Low energy Devotional Acts for when you don’t have a lot of energy (or time, or money, etc.)
💀Thanatos💀
- listen to a devotional playlist for Him
- listens to ‘dark ambient’ soundscapes
- learn about butterflies
- if able, visit a cemetery
- learn about the work that death doulas, hospice workers, funeral directors, morticians, cemetery caretakers, and grief counselors do
- if able tend to the grave of a loved one (tidy it up, bring new flowers/decorations, etc.)
- talk to deceased loved ones (doesn’t have to be anything fancy- I talk to my dead dog all the time I say good morning to him and when we leave I tell him we’ll be back etc. whatever you wanna tell them you tell them!)
- learn the stages of grief and how complex grief is
- if interested and able (I know this can be touchy) learn about the process of dying and what happens to the body after death
- learn about what you can have done to your body after death- there’s lots of interesting options out there! Burial at sea is still very much a thing that can be done, I didn’t know that until I got curious and looked this stuff up!
- if able and willing talk to your loved ones about what your wishes are for when you die- what do you want to happen to your body, what do you want your funeral to be like, etc. (I include this because I used to work in assisted living and nothing is worse than your family just not knowing what your wishes are for when you die, I’ve heard too many horror stories)
- learn about death magic and spirit work
- learn about the Victorian era spirituality craze (like the uptick in things like seances and all that, it’s all very interesting)
- learn about the many ways to communicate with the dead
- destigmatize death- death has become a very hush-hush subject which doesn’t really do us any favors in my opinion so don’t be afraid to talk about it, talk about your wishes, etc.
- learn about funerary practices throughout history and around the world
- learn about the meaning of death throughout history and around the world
- listen to songs about death
- read poems, books, plays about death- there’s a lot of them and they’re quite interesting
- watch movies/shows about death (my personal favorite is the seventh seal)
- if able and willing reflect on your own thoughts and feelings on death (can be death in general, about your own mortality, etc.)
- look up cemetery symbols and symbolism! And whenever able do a cemetery scavenger hunt
- wear black
- learn about how to help someone who is grieving
- listen to goth music
- be kind to spirits
- learn about haunted locations
- read ghost stories (idk if this counts but my personal favorite is The Legend of Sleepy Hollow)
💤Hypnos💤
- listen to a devotional playlist for Him
- listen to calming soundscapes
- learn about symbolism in dreams
- learn about the stages of sleep
- if able establish and practice good sleep hygiene
- learn about good sleep hygiene
- if unable (or you have a hard time sleeping) look up calming and quiet activities you can do instead
- listen to calming music
- if able make your bedroom into a cozy safe space
- learn about herbs and plants with calming and/or sleep inducing properties
- if able donate some bedding you don’t use anymore (even animal shelters will take some! Bedding is always in high demand in all sorts of places so if you’re needing to unload some this is the chance to do it!)
- learn about our sleep cycles and the circadian rhythm
- if you have young family members (kids, little siblings) tuck them in and/or read them a bedtime story
tbh this is my approach to death and the realm of the dead. As sad as it when someone or something passes away, I view the universe in a perpetual state of death and transformation, made of energy, light and life that is continually turning into newness by its demise, and so I welcome Thanatos as an old friend who sometimes has to take people I love somewhere else, but I always welcome him in with praise and love, for it is his embrace that makes life possible and worthy.
For every newborn flower born of fallen leaves, I bring praise and offerings to Thanatos, to Hades, to Persephone and all of the Cthonic gods, who are creation and destruction in one 😊Have a snickers, old friends.
