World Famous Oki Dog, Los Angeles, spring 1999
I look like a total doofus in this photo - what was going on with my hair?, also that jacket was awful but my mom made me wear it - but I am posting it anyway because a) I’m in front of Oki Dog and b) it is the first known photograph of me wearing that Clash t-shirt.

You walk down Alameda Looking at the cracks in the sidewalk Thinking about your friends How you maintain all them in A constant state of suspense
For your own protection Over their affection Nobody broke your heart You broke your own 'cause you can't finish what you start

Text
“The belief is sometimes the biggest part of it all. You can choose to believe in your published book being held in the loving hands of strangers, your name tattooed forever on the heart of the one you adore; you can choose to believe in tiny red-haired pesky piskies - all the things “they” may tell you not to believe in. But who are they anyway? What do they know? What makes them any more real?”
— Francesca Lia Block, from I Was A Teenage Fairy

Top: Phuzzz, live at the YMCA in Racine, sometime in 1998.
Bottom: Phuzzz’s self-released cassette.
Later, they changed their name to Quazi Stellar, and released an ‘official’ album; which can be downloaded for free here.

I always loved this poem and every poetry professor I had in college and grad school pressured me to change it. I never liked those revisions.

Check out this mix on @8tracks: punky brewster by matildawhiskey.
This is a mix tape someone made for me when I was 15 or 16, and to this day, it remains one of the best mixes I have ever received. It’s got proto-punk, punk, post-punk, garage rock, it rules. (There is one difference from the original version - the final track was The Hi-Fives “No No,” which I could not find an .mp3 of, so I closed it with a different Hi-Fives tune.)
Side A
The Undertones - True Confessions
Tom Robinson Band - Up Against the Wall
Generation X - Ready, Steady, Go
Buzzcocks - What Do I Get?
The Clash - Career Opportunities
Stiff Little Fingers - Rough Trade
Wire - Reuters
Mission of Burma - Fame and Fortune
Gang of Four - Damaged Goods
Magazine - My Mind Ain’t So Open
Radio Birdman - Love Kills
The Saints - A Minor Aversion
Celibate Rifles - Bill Bonney Regrets
Sex Pistols - Pretty Vacant
The Damned - Help!
The Stooges - Loose
Dead Boys - Sonic Reducer
Ramones - I Don’t Wanna Walk Around With You
Side B
The Velvet Underground - Head Held High
New York Dolls - Trash
Lyres - How Do You Know?
Wipers - Messenger
Lords of the New Church - Black Girl White Girl
Poison 13 - One Step Closer
Thee Headcoats - Headcoat Man
The Gories - There But For The Grace of God Go I
