The idea of Chara (even a monster version) growing up in a universe where their aggressive tendencies were not only tolerated but praised and encouraged  would probably not end well for anyone.

When it comes to chara and giving that character any bit of extra story outside of what is presented in the game, it is mostly projection on the writer. The game shows that chara was simply a bad egg, something that does indeed happen from time to time. Moreover, Chara being abused is never confirmed, but Chara's abuse towards Asriel is solidly shown in game. Bullying between siblings may be normal yes, but making someone help kill yourself to go kill others is in no way reasonable, kid or no.

Oh boy the Discourse. This is going to get long so please bear with me.

First off all, I have a few main issues with this.

1). Your assertion that Chara was “a bad egg from the start”.

I’m just going to break my feelings on this down for you. Chara was a kid. They are called “child” in game, not, “a scary adult who lived with the dreemurrs”. They were, no matter what actions they took, a kid. Kids are not mature, fully formed individuals. They do not understand things. They act in ways that are immature. They need guidance and comfort from adults. 

No child would hate humanity for no reason. No child would wake up one morning and decide to climb a mountain nobody returned from. We do not know exactly why Chara climbed the mountain, but we know it was not for “a very nice reason.” 

Chara did not know monsters existed any more then Frisk did, based on evidence in canon. If they were not abused, then they must have been terribly unhappy and hurt for some other reason. 

You can take the stance that Chara was 100% responsible for the genocide route. You can tell me a lot of their actions were harmful to Asriel. But it is very depressing to hear it written off as them being “a bad egg”. You could do the same to Asriel, for turning to murder when he lost his soul! The potential was in him all along, was it not? There must have been something “bad” in there, that made him do that. But saying this overlooks his own trauma and complexities as a character, that pushed him to act the way he did.  A child character, like Asriel, but also like Chara, should be treated with respect and we should attempt to understand and sympathize with them. 

2). Chara’s ‘abuse’.(part 2)

I went into this before in the post that started this whole debacle, but again, a child, no evidence of any malicious intent towards Asriel pre-game, literally kills themselves to attempt to free their family. Ever since no/c/ho///co made this theory, I have really reeaaaaally disliked it. If Chara’s behavior was to the level they claimed, there is no way Toriel or Asgore would not have known and put a stop to it. And if you’re right and Chara wasn’t abused, what reason would they have to pick on Asriel? 

3). “The Plan Was Abuse.”

It was pretty fucked up and should have 100% been stopped and displayed some really unhealthy codependency Chara and Asriel seemed to have. But Asriel agreed to help within like literally 5 minutes.  You could call Chara’s actions emotional manipulation I guess but?? I think it gives a literal kid a bit to much credit  and implies it was a lot more intentional and malicious on their part (think back to being around 9-12. how rational and calculating were you??? I was really into pretending I was a warrior cat.)

tldr: Calling a someone coded around 9-12 years old as an abuser just icky to me. Why would you??? Its not necessary?? Let Chara and Asriel have a nuanced and interesting relationship without just slamming “Chara Was An Abuser” onto it.

(And ah, don’t worry that’s not unfounded!! They defiantly Had Issues that the dreemurrs could not address properly, which lead to their own maladaptive coping mechanisms going Full Swing at our sweet sheltered prince. 

I dislike however, calling them abusive, when it is highly implied that they suffered serious childhood abuse on the surface, and any bullying or lashing out was probably tied to serious unaddressed interpersonal and emotional issues. Calling that abusive, in general, feels more disrespectful then anything. 

Of course, to Asriel, having an edgy paranoid bullying sibling was probably less then pleasant, especially at first. In a perfect world, Chara could have gotten the help the needed to not fling themselves and Asriel into a weird codependent sibling thing. In the end tho, it seemed they were close enough to call each other best friends, which to me at least, seemed entirely genuine on Chara’s part. Despite everything, luv the gote. 

(( @asdclaptrap ahahah thank you!! as much as i utterly adore chara and asriels relationship, his lines post pacifist route feel a bit…off. “not the greatest person”, like hes trying to place all the blame for their deaths on chara, now that he’s realized he’s made the right choice in sparing humans thanks to frisk. Its an interesting dynamic, and one i’ve always felt post-pacifist fics ignored for having their relationship immediatly fix itself. breaking off codependency is a lot harder then that!!

But I’d like to state straight off for the record that this is a soft chara blog though. none of this “chara was abusive” bs. the way asriel will talk about them on this blog will always be through his own perception warped by his trauma and grief and chara was like…9 guys.. they were like 9 or smth they weren’t as smart as they thought they were.))
