F.for angsty artwork reasons. How did riker cope with being bullied and his brother dying and being forced to mask as a kid/teen

I had to think about this for a bit-- I haven't written down a ton of specifics. In general terms, it was like he was trying to smother a fire.

Riker had some violent outbursts as a young kid, and had a habit of putting small metal objects in his mouth--screws, washers, that sort of thing-- but after he was diagnosed with autism, his mother came down harder on his behavior. He probably started smoking by mid-late middle school; drank a little in high school but that didn't get Really Bad until college. He was pretty lonely, had one good friend who was a preacher's son (mostly because I like the idea of him getting thoughtful over the Dusty Springfield song).

He also did mechanical repairs on cars, farm equipment, etc. I think he would've thrown himself into tuning things up when he needed to decompress or be away from people. Something I was fairly recently added to the backstory of Riker Venczel, the version of him in The Five Bright Stars, was that his hometown was near a robotics/automaton manufacturing plant, so there were some robots that came in and out of town, more than average for a small town in the Midwest. That probably could hold true for Szarka, too; one incident the two versions share and is briefly referenced in Bad Moon Rising is Riker repairing a 'bot that he found powered down in a barn. That 'bot was named Fitzgerald II and became a sort of fatherly figure for Riker for a while, though he left town before Stephen's death. He came back for a little bit to attend the funeral, but I don't think they reconnected after that.

Sometimes i make a small doodle of riker on a piece of paper and his face just looks so sad like a wet dog and i feel compelled to throw the paper at a wall

I forget it wrapped up so I check time to time and see if it updated and then I’m like “oh right, it ended and I saw how it ended!” Forever grateful to witness the end of such a well-written story.

Funnily enough, The Hound and The Fox (Oil in Water) is listed on the base playlist for The Jack, post-repairs! I think I originally put it there because of the lyrics and the thought of him calling out hypocrisy-- which he does do a bit. But I can see it working for Hare too!

Probably more awkward! I think he may have dabbled in edgy/emo fashion but didn't press his luck, given his mother wouldn't have liked it. It's not something he would've returned to in college/beyond school.

I was thinking about how the Walter bots had raised generations of little Walters and how the Becile bots didn't have this opportunity. The closest thing was The Jack, in a sad, twisted and cruel way.

Do you have any thoughts on how they would have raised a kid?

Ohhhhh, y'know, it'd be easy to joke about how they'd be terrible influences and the most rowdy, trouble-inspiring set of uncles and aunt, but they'd probably be a mixed bag... They'd just stagger their bad ideas until the kids were older XD

Hare's squeamish around Human Oozes so he'd probably keep any babies at arm's length, literally. Once the kid was older he'd be teaching them card and coin tricks and how to steal from the adults, and then sneaking them out of the house, and you know you're gonna be getting your license soon, have you ever considered driving a get-away car. And of course if the kid was queer he'd be very supportive.

The Skull is 100% a disciplinarian and a snitch so that kid is going to do their homework. He'd be against Hare's influence in some ways, mostly in trying to point the kid away from stealing from other family members, and in doing so ends up a target for hi-jinks himself. The kid would not be scared of The Skull because he would not hurt them.

The Jack, well, assuming the timeline stays the same, he wouldn't be left alone with the kid a lot. In actuality he'd be more likely to run away from a crying child than to put them in any danger, but no-one trusts him at that point. Once the kid was older they'd probably get tasked with watching out for The Jack like Hare and The Skull were.

Dee was a mother in her past life, but there's only so much you can do from behind a closed door. She might offer advice to Hare when the kid starts to have complicated emotional problems, or talk through the door to them for short times.

Locksmith was locked up, but that's ok, because manipulation aside, the kid would find Locksmith borrrinnngggg.

Riker and Scratch don't super factor in here, but if they did... Riker probably isn't great with kids or teens and knows it, so while he wouldn't be mean, he'd be stand-offish. Scratch on the other hand is young enough to remember being a teen and would be friendly with them.

And Tatters would love the attention.
