Okay, what if Kara came to Earth first and was raised by the Kents? The answer will break your heart in the best of ways!
I love the interactions between Lois and Kara. Jimmy is adorable. But what I enjoy the most is the thinking done in the fic.
(Also, the sequel, Sunburst, mAKES MY HEART EXPLODE WITH JOY).

Anenko is one of those authors who have a writing voice that is just like the actual manga - which is interesting to see how the written word and drawn manga interact.
The way Anenko writes both Moko and Kyoko is a joy to read - she perfectly encapsulates their ways of thinking and desires, their reactions, their triumphs and failures.
This fic is summed up: Moko is a good friend.
Moko is the Best Friend, though she’ll fight you if you say it. Just read and enjoy!

Well, I never finished Daa Daa Daa! and now I kinda don’t want to because I don’t believe that it will stand up to 143.
This is a beautiful, moving fic about love and loss and life. It takes place in the aftermath of Ryuu going home and is absolutely heartbreaking in its sincerity. These are kids who are mourning their child, regardless of age and coping mechanisms and it’s like the sudden greyness of a day when you look around and everything’s muted, but there’s that bittersweet taste of sorrow in the back of your mouth.
Yeah, that didn’t really make sense, but read the fic and let me know if that’s what you felt too!

Okay, who thought it was okay to write a crossover of FMA and Yotsuba&!?
Well, ryfkah is a genius I tell you.
Yotsuba is Yotsuba, despite any universe changes. And Yotsuba in Fort Briggs manages to perfectly encapsulate all of the wonderful...quirks of personality that the characters have.
It’s short and sweet, but well worth the read.

I read this over the winter holiday. And then I went back to work, came home again, sat down on the couch, opened up a tab to see if the story had updated and then when I looked up again, five hours had passed, the cat was hungry, and I still hadn’t made dinner.
...I had also reread the entire dang thing.
So, let me start out by saying that this is one of my favorite fics discovered in 2017. Wrought’s writing is dynamic, engaging, and occasionally like a punch of emotion to the face (our main protagonist, Raiku, is the most adorably oblivious character ever and I would physically punch people in the stomach for her. I love her and her reactions). The characters are well-written and spring off the page; the plot is unique and I can’t wait to see where it goes.
Meet Raiku of the Gairano “family united under a common goal.” They can see what is called the Genematrix, “the source of every tragic story, dramatic interlude and attractively damaged character alive and precious.”
The beginning author’s note says that this is a parody and comedy, in my opinion, this work far outstrips what typically is written as a parody in fandom circles and has become a beautiful, fleshed-out interpretation of Naruto canon (disclaimer: I stopped reading Naruto canon after everyone died and was MIRACULOUSLY brought back to life the next chapter because my poor heart couldn’t take the trauma. I still enjoy every scrap of fic I read!). I love and feel for all of the characters introduced through the story. Raiku’s internal monologues (especially during time skips), had me literally howling with laughter (the cat was Not Amused) and having to take breaks to gain my breath back.
This fic is funny and brilliant. I have to go back and reread chapters again, finding crumbs of foreshadowing and piecing together what’s actually happening vs. what Raiku thinks is happening. I would never be a ninja - I can barely read the underneath, let alone underneath the underneath, but this story is so fun to puzzle out!
Fanart and other fic can be found on the author’s tumblr, @northwrought and is all adorable (and occasionally heart breaking in the best of ways).
So, for 2018, I’ll be trying to rec a fic a day (it’s already February, so I’ve got a lot of catch up to do, but wish me luck!). This review has been on my mind for a while, but it updated today and pushed me into actually making a post.

Let’s try this again, shall we?
Alright, originally this was going to be a photo blog, but I think a name like asleep-in-the-library is more deserving of books…or fics.
Welcome to my new fic rec blog. Let’s see if I can do this.

So, some background first. My little sister loves archaeology, especially in Central America and plans to major in both when she goes off to college. So, for her high school graduation I attempted a cake I had never attempted before. A cake...shaped like one of my sister's favorite ruins in Chichén Itzá. And because I'm a glutton for baking punishment, I decided to also include the ruins of the pyramid it was built over.

So, because I am apparently a crazy woman, I decided to make two cakes--chocolate with raspberry buttercream frosting on the outside and a chocolate ganache and raspberry syrup coated lemon cake inside to represent the ruins. The entire cake was then covered with a raspberry flavored marbled fondant to make it look like stone. Unfortunately, I made the fondant by hand and it turned a little too dry and cracked a quarter way through its application. So I covered the cracks with gold powder to make it look like the building was gold underneath (not academic, I know but I had been working on it for about six hours by then and was NOT in a mood to fix it). I did a bunch of calculations on how to make it scale before throwing in the towel and deciding to make it delicious instead. That means that I threw out one layer (then used to make a small sheet cake) and basically ignored the calculations I spent three days trying to figure out. The original building has nine steps and a staircase running down it, but I just kinda ran out of energy by the end.
But it's delicious and turned out really well. We had her party a month ago and are still eating the leftovers from it!

I made polenta casserole tonight and it is delicious. The creaminess of the polenta offsets the spice of the sausage and I cannot get enough of it.
