We’ve been pretty quiet publicly on the CM13 (Marshmallow) progress, but we’ve been busy bees behind the scenes. Today, we’ve enabled the first wave of devices to receive CM13 nightlies. Now, before you jump head first into flashing these, please take a moment to read the items below – as they will impact your experience.

If you are on CM 12.1 YOG4P or CM 12.1 YOG7D releases, we recommend you stay on course with the SNAPSHOT release channel and not jump to nightlies unless you are willing to accept a dip in quality. Our stable branches are vetted, CTS run and (in some cases) shipped on retail devices – which means the quality of those branches is far and above that of nightlies. We’d advise these folks to stay on the SNAPSHOT train, and we’ll have a quality approved SNAPSHOT for CM13 sometime Jan.

If you are on a 12.1 nightly, you can ‘dirty flash’ CM13 (read update like any sane person) as long as you also update your third party addons in the same pass. This means, if you use Xposed, OpenGapps, etc. flash a Marshmallow compatible version of them immediately after your CM13 flash.

If you have taken any unofficial, XDA or self made builds of the CM13 source code, we’d advise you to wipe upon coming to our official nightlies as we cannot ensure upgrade compatibility with third party distributions. Of course, you are welcome to not heed our suggestion, but don’t blame us if something goes sideways.

The device roster is starting small, and will grow over the next few weeks.

I have a real issue with mainstream television. I am not fond of the writing, I don’t like many of the plot lines, and most of it isn’t appropriate for family viewing. I didn't see that here with PowerDVD, and I tested it on an older, Windows 7 based PC.If you’ve ripped your DVD’s to ISO’s, PowerDVD 15 now offers convenient direct playback of Blu-ray and DVD ISO files, either directly from the PC or via a network-connected drive. You see them nearly everywhere, and if you're like me, you use them… a lot. Finding the right zip file client is often difficult in a sea full of zippers, finding the right one for you is difficult at times. My favorite happens to be Ashampoo's Zip Pro. As a zip client for Windows, its hard to beat. Compressing and uncompressing files are common operations. You do the same things when you copy and delete files. Ashampoo ZIP Pro seamlessly integrates with Windows Explorer and provides convenient status updates as well as jump lists through the Windows 7 and 8 taskbar. Zip Pro's features are presented through a Windows 8 like tile-based interface that displays essential features as rearrangable tiles. Zip Pro has powerful file encryption with multiple algorithms. Zip Pro's encryption can also encrypt and sign Office and PDF files, adding another level and layer of security to your data protection strategy.  App Pro’s: Easy to use, Works with Windows 7 – 8.x App Con’s: Interface is very Windows 8-like Conclusion: Zip Pro also offers a few other features, like being able to create self-extracting archives. You can even repair damaged archives with this tool. I can't tell you how many times I've spent time downloading a corrupted zip file. Now, you can fix those bad files. If you're looking for ISO support, you're going to find it here. With Zip Pro, you can access parts of ISO images, and even create them with it. Its all kinda cool. What the app does is really great. That it follows and emulates the Windows 8 Start Screen is something that may not sit well with a lot of people, me included. The interface may simulate Windows 8, but its not. Non standard interfaces in windows have a tendency to be memory pigs. I haven't had enough time to really put the app through its paces. Antimalware Premium is currently $ 20USD, but covers three (3) PC’s for a year. This is why apps like 5KPlayer are so important, and on the Mac, it’s a great app to have in your media tool kit. 5KPlayer is a free media player for Mac OS. It's an all-in-one HD video/ music player, AirPlay streamer and free online video/ music downloader. It plays video flawlessly, and supports 4K/ 5K/ HD resolutions in MKV, MP4, AVI, WMV formats. It also can play YouTube video, MP3 music & DVD's. One of the best things that 5KPlayer does is support Apple's AirPlay . AirPlay allows you to stream media from iPad, iPhone to and from your Mac or AppleTV. If you've ever used AirPlay, then you know that the ability to find what you're looking for with one device and then wirelessly play it on your screen of choice is a huge win, especially if you have an Apple TV. That white noise – albeit high quality audio white noise – can be a huge productivity booster.  App Pro’s: Free, video conversion, App Con’s: It's not an iTunes replacement Conclusion: To be honest, I wasn't really excited about this app when I sat down to take a look at it. I ended up really loving it in the end. The app is easy to use, great looking, and best of all, supports AirPlay. The biggest "disappointment," however, is that it's not a full iTunes replacement. iTunes has become so bloated over the years that it's hard to work with at times and doesn't do a great job of organizing music. 5KPlayer is close here, but really does have a long way to go. However, its video playback is wonderful; AND it supports HD, 4K and 4K video playback, which you're going to want going forward. The app is free and would be a winner even if you had to pay for it. SpiderOak Backup, sync and protect your data with this cross platform, cloud-based tool. Cloud storage is something that everyone should have. Everyone. Period. Everywhere. You should also have more than one backup or instance of your data on more than one service. You should be using, for example, OneDrive AND Google Drive AND Dropbox AND SpiderOak. Yes… SpiderOak. It’s a very cool, very secure, multi-platform, cloud-based sync service, and it's pretty cool. Back in 2011, one of the first articles I wrote for InformationWeek was a roundup of cloud-based backup services, and SpiderOak made the cut then. It’s a GREAT service that doesn’t get half as much lime light as it really deserves. Its biggest draw – privacy. SpiderOak can't look at your data. They don't have your encryption keys. SpiderOak encrypts all of your data on its servers. This means that only YOU can get at your data. No plaintext data, no keys, or file meta data is ever stored on their servers. All this ensures absolute confidentiality of your data. SpiderOak couldn't decrypt it, even if ordered to by a court of law. The service is fast. I've been using it for quite some time now, and SpiderOak always has my data up and synchronized well before any of the other services I use. I'm not certain if it’s the compression they're using or some other feature; but it's always, quick, accurate and reliable. App Pro’s: Competitively priced storage plans, easy to use, 100% private App Con’s: Free plan doesn't offer enough storage space Conclusion: SpiderOak is the leading private backup solution and has 100% Zero Knowledge of your data. You can get 2GB of space for free, or 1TB of space for only $ 12 a month. Plans start at $ 7 a month for 30GB; and go up to 5TB. You can pay monthly or annually; and you can upgrade, downgrade or cancel your plan at any time. The only issue that I see with SpiderOak is the same issue that I see with OneDrive – they don't offer enough space on their free plan; and then their 1TB plan is $ 2USD more expensive than Google Drive. However, that shouldn't deter you for using this 100% private service. SpiderOak is an awesome service and one that I can't recommend highly enough. Football Manager , like its predecessors – either in the Championship Manager form or the rebranded Football Manager series – is a fantastic backroom, strategy and management football game. In Football Manager , you take the position of – you guessed it – a football manager. You start the game at the beginning of the football year, choose your player, choose your strategy and make all the decisions every budding Alex Ferguson might think of. The Football Manager series is known to go on for weeks and even if you were rushing through a season, it’d still take quite a few hours. These are games that you invest your time in, and Football Manager  – with its new features, larger database of players and clubs, and more interactive game play – is no exception. It is important to note, to those unfamiliar with the Football Manager series, that this is not your typical football sports game like the Fifa or Pro Evolution Soccer series. This is a game dedicated to the management, strategy and simulation side of football, and while there are 3D games to watch, the matches themselves are entirely lacking when lined up alongside other football game series. Pro's: Highly configurable, huge replay-ability, the best football management game out there. Con's: Requires a lot of time invested into it, 3D game play is lacking. Conclusion: Football Manager offers a level of realism, professionalism and depth that many video games simply could never offer. You can spend weeks and weeks playing a single season of Football Manager and forever be learning something. Never will you feel like you’re clicking ‘Next’ just for the sake of it. Yet this expansiveness will naturally turn many away, and if long-term, large-scale, management simulation games aren’t for you, then you should avoid at all costs. As with each instalment of the game, Football Manager gets better than the last, and when you’re already the greatest football management game out, that’s a winning combination.
