in primary one, we used to have "news books", jotters with only the bottom half of each page lined, where every monday we would record and illustrate what we did at the weekend.

and almost every weekend, I would go to my gran's house and we would play cards. usually a lot of switch and gin rummy, sometimes trumph. so often in fact, that after a weekend where there was a sunny day (rarity, I'm glaswegian) we had a barbecue with some family friends, my primary one teacher annotated my account of this in my news book with "You didn't go to your gran's and play cards?"

the gran I played a lot of cards with was legally blind for much of my memory. her cards were large print and she wore very big glasses. my big brother would sit opposite her and CHEAT his BLIND GRANNY at gin rummy, by using the reflection of her cards in her big glasses to know what she was collecting. he got away with this for years, presumably, until I grassed him in.
