NOT diagnosing anyone here but the whole debacle over the waterfall and etho's compliment/non-compliment thing was incredibly relatable to me, an autistic person. so many people in my life think i hate them and their hobbies because i ask (in my mind) innocent questions that, to them, are loaded—and the compliments i DO give out fly under the radar because of how i tend to deliver them. so it's so funny that the hermits deal with these same misunderstandings lol

I feel like I'm goin' nuts every time I see a post that says "oh they were all supposed to be insane cannibals but now only Shauna is like that and everyone else is just scared of her." No, they literally just condemned Coach Scott to death, tortured him because of a gas-huffing prophecy, ate him, and danced around his severed head like 3 episodes ago. Only Natalie objected to this on any meaningful level, and she was ostracized and punished for it.
The reason they're freaked out about Mari is because she's one of them, instead of an outsider. Literally, in the finale, they make a distinction between killing "enemies" and spilling their own blood- this is the line that some of the girls aren't willing to cross. That doesn't make them not villainous, or violent, or cannibalistic! It's actually not "better" to display some guy's head on a spike just because he's Not One Of Us. Shauna is terrifying because she's unwilling to make that distinction- she literally interrupts Van and Tai's plot to give Hannah the queen! Which they rationalized because she wasn't one of "them." And, in the adult timeline, Taissa decides that Shauna is the problem because Van dies, when approximately 1 day ago she was considering hunting down random people to murder on Van's behalf. It's easy to rationalize violence when it's not happening to people you care about, which is the brutal philosophical bedrock of civilization. The one taboo that most of the Yellowjackets are unwilling to break is killing the people you love, and Shauna has had her ability to love stripped away to nothing.

as much as i completely understand the shauna haters, we HAVE forgotten what happened in s2. to compare her to natalie—who is by and large an angel despite what happened to her—she is not a perfect victim. she's shitty, mean, and vindictive. . .but the worst thing that can happen to ANYONE happened to her and I'm not talking about jackie. it's easy to move on from it bc it was intentionally made to "go away" (the YJs knew dwelling on it was not an option), but Shauna's baby dying and her delusion making her believe (for even just a second) that her teammates had eaten him is what drives the story.
i'm not trying to get at a trauma olympics type thing here w/ a reference to natalie, but we should recognize that shauna was only a shitty best friend/wife before her baby brutally died—she is not evil for evil's sake. she's been experiencing a severe mental health episode for half a year, and it gets worse as it approaches the anniversary of her son's death, as they find someone she compartmentalized as complicit in his death.
it was only after that that she became violent and vengeful. it's why she allowed melissa to cling on to her. it's why mari ran away and found coach. it's why she wanted to hunt coach, and then condemn him to death, and then force him to live with "what he had done." it's why she couldn't ever have a healthy relationship. it's why she tried to force natalie to see what she'd been going through, only to drive her away to seek safety instead.

okay so considering what we know now and comparing it to s1, what DID make everyone forget that shauna was like that? natalie is obviously the most affected by her actions out of the survivors in s1, but she still treats her relatively normal in the scenes where they're trying to find the blackmailer. taissa remembers her as her best friend in the wilderness, but not as what she became
if shauna and lottie were similarly victims to psychosis and hallucination, were the girls only willingly to temporarily forget how she was because she, unlike lottie, shied away from it after their rescue?
or does something else happen between the finale and their rescue that justifies everyone forgetting just how they acted?
