the first years were always fun to watch, they seemed to be filled with such naivety and innocence - something that was taken from everyone at hogwarts from last year. astoria could not imagine what life might have been like for harry potter's friends, ron weasley and hermione granger, and astoria was seldom to ask them, but she didn't mind talking to them about other things. astoria approached ron, following his gaze to the two friends that were having a grand ol' time. "to last year, before everything happened? yeah. do you wanna go do something else instead, maybe to get your mind off of this?"
hallway // open starter
ron stares wistfully at the passing first years, eagerly going to their classes as they laugh and giggle. a sharp pain hits his chest as he sees a little red haired boy, surprisingly unknown to him and could not possibly be related to him, and a black haired boy with messy hair talking animatedly to each other. ron could imagine the two of them becoming best friends but would they share a fate similar to his own? he shivers. ron leans against the pillar. “do you ever wish you could go back?” he says aloud, still staring at the first years.

"there are so many different subjects you can read!" astoria enthused with a smile. sometimes, and not often, the muggles had things right. their books were something of pure wonder, their brains took them places that maybe wizardkind's brains could never. "really? they're quite interesting. they write about everything! not only about things that have never happened, but things that happen to them too! they have such diverse lives and they're interesting creatures. i never knew."
"it would depend entirely on the subject." evgeni shrugged. they'd read just about every book on the levskis they could manage to get their hands on. even if they wouldn't personally touch a chaser position with a ten foot pole, the family legacy was a sight. but muggle books? they don't even think they could name one. "i can say honestly i've never so much as looked at a muggle book. what would they even write about?" fiction, most likely, as their real lives couldn't possibly be worth recounting.

when astoria's brain caught up to her and she realized the person she was rattling onto was hermione granger, her heart sunk. how awful was it to lose your very best friend in the whole world? astoria could not imagine. "which sister do you relate to the most? i will have to put a few on my list, i'm sure that you have such vast opinions." if astoria was being honest with herself, she could see herself having a good friendship with hermione granger. "i would love some recommendations! one day, you must show me your favourite book store back home." maybe astoria couldn't bring harry potter back or make anything better, but she could try to be a distraction.
hermione opened her mouth the answer when the other rattled on. if this conversation had happened a year ago she'd be over the moon to be talking about muggle books with someone, especially in the wizarding world. "little women is one of my favorites. i also loved anne of green gables and jane eyre," despite not feeling all the way there, there was no way hermione could not take the opportunity to have this conversation. "have you ventured out of the classics? i have a ton of recommendations if you want some."

reading took astoria out of the world that she lived in and into an entirely new world, somewhere that the blonde couldn't even imagine being. the muggles wrote about their woes, their life experience, fiction - these were all things that astoria had no idea about until she actually gave them a chance. she wondered if pansy would ever give them a chance or if she would stay ignorant forever? not that astoria would say that out loud, she loved pansy too much to point out her flaws. "aren't you a doll, pansy?" she cooed towards her sister's friend; despite pansy's flaws, she was such a lovely girl. "how about we go shopping together?"
the parkinson family may not be known for having the most expansive library at the manor, however it was acceptable to pansy, who honestly did not have the most interest in reading every piece of literature out there. although, if she did, she would travel the whole wizarding world, search every ancient tome out there before letting a muggle book touch her expensive and expertly manicured fingertips. "of course i'm right." the serpent proudly agreed as she put away the mirror that had been in her hand and turned to face the blonde. "not often, but if it means finding you an acceptable book to read that will be completely enthralling, for you i'll search every shelf."

"I think she would too." And even if Sprout didn't, both her and Neville were good enough students that they wouldn't get into too much trouble if they got caught. As she watched the bulb jump up and down, she leaned back, contemplating with her eyebrows furrowed. "If I remember correctly, it's Flipendo, right?" One thing that Astoria would forever give herself props on was her passion for Herbology; one day, she would make a successful career out of it. If she looked far into Neville's future, she could see him becoming a Professor - he was so patient and kind, someone that students could trust.
The question stopped him for a moment. Would Sprout approve? "I think she would want you to advance your learning, so yes." The bulb may make a mess with the greenhouse, but that's why Neville was here. It was a young bulb, so it could be immobilized if needed. He laughed as Astoria opened the box, expecting her to do so. There were few as passionate about herbology as Astoria, and he would never have thought they would become such good friends. When he found out a Greengrass would be in herbology, Neville expected to see the typical sacred twenty-eight type, not the joyful and nice girl before him. He was so happy to be wrong about someone. "I love your excitement, but we don't want to face the anger of Sprout. How do you think we should catch it?" Neville questioned, wanting to see if the younger student knew the answer. The bulb hadn't knocked over anything but was picking up speed.

oh god, this was completely the wrong person that astoria opened her fat mouth to; she should have just stayed quiet and to herself, otherwise she wouldn't be in this uncomfortable conversation. hestia was one person that astoria attempted to avoid throughout her time at hogwarts, whether it was because she was intimidating or just plainly unpleasant. "i excel in most of my classes-" save for dada, "my sister and i have a connection that i don't think you'd understand." astoria's heart was beating fast, she wasn't sure what to say. "well, that would be rather distasteful."
if not for the pedigree the greengrass name came with, hestia likely would've departed the moment astoria opened her mouth and broke the younger witch's concentration. but as she sat and listened, she couldn't hide the disgust that claimed her features at the other's praise of muggle literature. "are you completely daft? do your parents know your read that filth? your sister? do they know you keep it in the house?" she made a sound mimic wretching. she had half a mind to seek out daphne and warn her of her sister's indiscretion and to alert their parents to the decided crime. "i would rather be burned alive."

the moment that astoria witnessed pansy's disgust and disappointment, the people pleaser inside of her was filled with embarrassment; it almost made her sick to her stomach. whoever astoria was with, besides daphne, was the person that everyone wanted her to be, but she would never admit that out loud. there were so many fun things in the muggle world that so many people didn't get to experience, however, right now, astoria would agree with pansy - not only to avoid an argument, but also for the word to not get back to her parents that their youngest daughter is a muggle lover. "i mean, i guess you're right to not resort to those. do you check out the library often? we should go later so you can point them out to me."
pansy was minding her own, taking a moment between class to freshen up her makeup, a mirror raised in front of her face in one hand. her best friend's sister, a sister of her own in a way, sitting next to her. the thing that the snake adored the most of the blonde was that she did not have to do most of the talking. sure, she loved the sound of her own voice but it was exhausting at time to keep the game of charades going. the dark haired witches face twisted into an expression of disgust as she listen to the other. "that's an astounding no, bunny. if you need good books, i will find you some, there is absolutely no need to resort to... those."

"do you like books... or reading?" astoria turned to the person who was sitting directly next to her, she wasn't going to let them answer as words continued to spew out, "specifically, muggle books are quite enchanting!" she rattled on with excitement, waving her hands around as she spoke. "i brought a few with me from home. they're really scarce in the library." she sighed heavily at the outrageous supply of muggle books in the library; astoria was such an unfortunate pureblood in these dire times! the library maybe had four, dependent on how observant she was. "would you like to borrow one? little women is really good."

astoria was getting bored of the daily: going to classes, doing homework, spending time with her friends, whatever else. when astoria got bored, she turned to one of her favourite people, ant otterburn. astoria entered the hufflepuff common room on a mission; her eyes scanned the regular hangouts for ant until she found him on the comfiest couch. she wasted no time in striding on over to him to sit comfortably on the spot next to him. "oh, did she? how positively dramatic - i love it. have you given anyone a cuddle lately, ant?"
closed: @astoriiagreeengrass location: hufflepuff common room
ant had come to learn quickly over the years that first years came with a certain entertainment factor. he supposed part of it was an age thing, another the new environment. whatever that truth was, he'd been sat in the middle of the common room, tucked away with a flask as his entertainment played on for the night. when the couch cushion shifted at his side, ant, only half-looked away from the scene in front of him to eye astoria as she joined him. "'pparently, loraly hit on poppy's boyfriend. gave 'im a cuddle afta the masquerade. big scandal."

The moment that the box was in front of Astoria, she was instantly intrigued. "Oh, am I?" Neville was such a gentle soul with the kindest eyes, Astoria cherished her Gryffindor friend so much. "Would Sprout approve?" She joked with a wide grin, her eyes growing with excitement. "I think I've read about them before, but I've never seen one in person!" Astoria pulled the box lid open, watching the bouncing bulb jump into the air.
where - greenhouse when - mid afternoon who - @astoriiagreeengrass
Neville was bouncing as he laid the box on the table in front of Astoria. "You are going to love this," he says excitedly. There's a slight rumble as the box seems to move. "This is actually something you won't learn till your fourth year, but it's one of my favorites." There's a huge grin on Neville's face as he pushes it towards Astoria. "It's called the bouncing bulb."

introduction.
. ✧ . * . ⌜ elle fanning, twenty-one, cis woman, she/her / feather by sabrina carpenter + a crisp autumn morning, warm butterbeer on a cold day, the smell of rain ⌟ hey, have you met ASTORIA GREENGRASS yet? the PUREBLOOD is a THIRD YEAR at hogwarts and are a HUFFLEPUFF. makes sense given they tend to be a bit OPTIMISTIC and NAIVE. it seems the death of the boy who lived has placed them on the DARK side of the looming war. let’s just hope they make it out alive.
i. basics.
✧ full name: astoria augustine greengrass. ✧ birthday: february 24. ✧ age: twenty-one. ✧ gender: ciswoman. (she/her.) ✧ blood status: pureblood. ✧ sexuality: bicurious.
ii. appearance.
✧ height: 5'8. ✧ distinguishable features: noticeable freckles across her nose and upper cheeks. ✧ eye colour: blue. ✧ faceclaim: elle fanning.
iii. personality.
✧ patronus: hummingbird (cannot make one as of yet). ✧ big three: pisces sun, aquarius moon, libra rising.✧ ✧ positive traits: benevolent, loyal, passionate, vivacious. ✧ negative traits: fanciful, fickle, passive, overly sensitive.
iv. brief biography.
✧ astoria was the last born greengrass child to atticus and ophelia, making her the baby of the family. as atticus and ophelia both worked demanding jobs at the ministry of magic, the responsibility to raise astoria and daphne fell onto the house elves and the nanny's that the parents hired. when the greengrass parents were home, they were teaching their daughters how to either be perfect purebloods, which astoria took extremely serious. astoria had one job only: be the perfect pureblood woman, and her parents would be immensly proud of her.
✧ astoria's childhood was sheltered and lonely due to her parent's refusal of interacting with anyone lesser than them. as a child, astoria enjoyed talking to every person and animal that she encountered; taking astoria out in public anywhere was a multiple hour affair, which many adults in her life dreaded, so she was often left at home where she was often bored and under stimulated. fortunately for astoria, she had her sister to keep her company and astoria knew that daphne's favourite thing was listening to her sister's incessant talking.
✧ atticus and ophelia had always considered their youngest daughter a fragile girl that could not take the wizarding world at face value and expected their eldest daughter to keep astoria protected from the horrors of their world. because astoria has been extremely out of the loop of the wizarding world, she is considered to be naive and ignorant.
✧ the moment that astoria received her letter at eighteen, she could not stop talking about it to anyone who would listen. truthfully, she was ready to get out of the greenhouse manor and meet new people who were a little different than her, even if they weren't purebloods - her parents and the kept around nannies warned astoria about the lesser beings in hogwarts, but astoria only pretended to listen and nod encouragingly.
✧ when astoria was sorted into hufflepuff, she was mildly disappointed. she was delusional enough to think that she had the qualities of slytherin, and that the hat would see her potential in the house of the snake - unfortunately, she was a badger and was forced to sit with her hufflepuff housemates while her cheeks burned red with embarrassment... a perfect pureblood didn't get sorted into the weak hufflepuff.
✧ astoria's disappointed tune changed the moment that she had started herbology, where she realized that she had a natural green thumb. plants was something that astoria was instantly good at; she enjoyed how plants seemed complicated on the outside, but once used to them, they were straightforward.
✧ duelling was never a strong magical skill for astoria, as she scored a low grade in DADA in her first year. her parents, disappointed that their daughter seemed to care less about her duelling abilities, forced her to sign up for the duelling club in the start of her second year. during astoria's first session in the duelling club, her arse was handed to her and when the session ended, she was outside in tears. a man in her daphne's year, draco malfoy, awkwardly consoles her and promises to help her train in duelling.
✧ the moment that everything came out about harry potter and his death, astoria was terrified. she expressed her fear to her parents in hopes of some clarity and a sense of closeness to her parents, and the two convinced/manipulated her that the dark side was the only side that made sense in the long run, especially for somebody like astoria.
v. wanted connections.
✧ people who side to the light side that make astoria second guess being on the dark side. ( 1 / 4 )
✧ someone that is trying to openly convince her to come to the light side. ( 1 / 1 )
✧ someone (or people) that she tutors in herbology. ( 0 / ? )
✧ someone that she has a crush (female or male) on. ( 2 / 2 )
✧ someone her parents want her to pursue. ( 0 / 1 )
✧ pureblood best childhood friend. ( 0 / 1 )
✧ hogwarts best friend, halfblood or muggleborn. ( 0 / 1 )
✧ first kiss, either gender. ( 0 / 1 )
vi. random facts.
✧ has a male tuxedo cat named licorice.
✧ keeps her hair in a fishtail braid every day.
✧ her favourite holiday is christmas.
✧ has been on a broom once, and then never again.
