NaPoWriMo - Day 27
Never Enough
If only I could have four arms
Then I would wish for eight
If only I could split into two
Then I would ask for a third
If only I could move faster
Then I would try to teleport
If only I could have an extra hour
Then I would need an extra day
If only I could pause time
Then I would want to rewind it
If only I had enough
Then I would need to find more

NaPoWriMo - Day 26
The Wicked Witch
Take a deep breath. Its time to brace
For whatever storm cloud awaits
Behind your sickly smile
hiding venomous fangs
Today will you be kind and calm?
Or will pretence of importance
Win out again? Ready
For us to fall in line
Pretend we're your lambs to shepherd
For you, teamwork looks like orders
Given without a word
Expecting us to follow
Sacrifice peers for your ego
Minimise every molehill
And pretend they're not
Mountains forged from our flesh
You don't see how bright the sky is now
How much easier it is to breathe
No poison to choke on in the air
No more praying for the day you leave

NaPoWriMo - Day 25
Still
You are never still
Don't believe the voices
That say you're stuck in place
trapped by puppet strings
Frozen in monotony
Because you are never still
Feel time tick in your lungs
Each breath brings the beat
That sets you moving
Through the rust and cobwebs
Yes you are never still
Every moment you stand in place
You still hurtle through space
Electricity flowing into
Every step, every breath,
Every blink
So you are never still
Even when you feel trapped
In cobwebs and wires
There's still time moving in your chest
Ready for you to move

NaPoWriMo - Day 24
The First Step
Sometimes you don’t see it coming
Don't realise the step you took
Until you realised along the way
That you jumped paths
Into something new
Bright potential spilling out ahead
And you cant even tell
Which step on this path was the first
Sometimes it looms
The first step
Off the cliff side into the unknown
Daring to send you plummeting
While you pray for a chance to fly
Either way you face
Something truly terrifying
One step. To change your whole world

NaPoWriMo - Day 23
Nocturnal
There are some who are built for early morn
To greet the new dawn as an old friend
Blinding sunlight they happily adorn
Enjoying plentiful days without end
Nighttime to them is the call to rest
And the world sleeps with the sun kissed blessed
But twilight is the time I come alive
Mind fuelled by moonlight, no matter the stakes
No stopping my imagination thrive
Fatigue from the day gone when my mind wakes
The world wakes and sleeps by the light of the sun
But the starlight signals my day's begun

NaPoWriMo Day 22
Lost Lullaby
Take me back.
Back to when your laughter
Still lived in this house
Your siren song a ringing bell
That echoed in every hall.
Back to when I could marvel
At your joyful angel face so bright
Look at the precious innocence
That shone in your sunshine smile
Back to when every heartache
Vanished with a hug and lullaby
Mother’s love could heal all wounds
While holding you soothed all mine
Back to before your light was gone
Silent halls and empty arms
Take me back. Take me back
So I can take my baby back once more.

NaPoWriMo - Day 21
Ode to an Asskick on a Sunday Morning
When the sun lights the chosen battleground
That is when the comrades in arms arrive
Ready to bring banter, let friendships thrive
In this test of arms renowned
Bring blood pounding in time with every blow
Weapons clash and clatter until lungs burn
Until each strike slows and weakens in turn
While strength and skill both grow
Only stop when the sun’s zenith appears
Mark the moment to rest with head held high
Break bread, regale those gathered with good cheer
While acquaintances become new allies

NaPoWriMo - Day 20
A trio of haikus
The hurricane lands
A storm forever spinning
Ready to destroy
Who should take the blame?
When storms and oceans collide
Wreaking destruction?
Which god holds the most
Responsibility when
Sea and sky battle?

NaPoWriMo - Day 19
Sugar and Wine
How sweet you used to be, love.
All sugar and light
Bright and innocent and pure.
Too sweet for my palate
But I couldn't refuse another taste
Another touch, another kiss
Risking cavities for one more bite.
Now look how they have burned you.
Sugar smoking into treacle,
Until there’s layers of bitter scents
Mixed amongst that sweetness I adore.
Pluck the grapes and press
Hide them away in darkness to ferment
And the wine will be deep and rich
And unrecognisable
From the fresh, sweet, perfectly ripe
Innocent grape
The flavour you bring now is heavy
Sticking to my tongue
Until you’re all I can taste
Biting bitterness and stinging sweet
Mixing down, down, down
Among layers of smoke and pain and need.
I will drown in you as you sour
And thank you for the meal
Yes. This bitter sweet flavour
suits you much better

NaPoWriMo - Day 18
Multiverse
Time is no linear line. It’s a web
Stretching out from a core never perceived
Into an eternity of potential.
Every choice splits into new strands
That grows new worlds in less than an instant.
Every life lived a thousand times and once
Never knowing what worlds might exist.
But if you could look beyond reality
Into the web to find your nearest strand
You would find a funhouse reflection
Of your face, on a person much like you
Unrecognisable. Unique. Alive.

NaPoWriMo - Day 17
British Spring
What wonderful weather
Whistles past the window
Without rhyme or reason.
Wind turns to sunny rays
Turns to hail, to thunder
In less than a wink.
All the seasons pass by
With only an hour lost
And the rest of the day left
To repeat the cycle.

NaPoWriMo - Day 16
Pride
Is it time to celebrate? Is it time to be proud
For rainbow paint and flags as capes
Pastel blue and pink emblazoned
on shirts and sheets and posters
Laughs and cheers and songs
echoing through the crowds
When we march, will it be with joy?
With love and pride and hope
To drown out the naysayers, the haters
By saying us existing banishes their shadows
So we can shine without restraint
Or will we be dressed for something darker
No capes in fear they might choke us
Tattoos covered and paint stowed away
In case the march becomes a chase
When we march, will it be pride or defiance
That echoes in every shaking step
And sets our voices trembling?
When they see our faces
What will that day of pride become?
When its time, what will we become?

NaPoWriMo - Day 15
(And with this I'm caught up on posting for my blogs. Also I'm running out of ideas so this one started from a meta place)
Halfway there
The midpoint is the hardest part
Worn down by the gruelling grind
That finish line too far away
To give its spark of motivation.
Here it’s only dark and dirt and sweat
Digging through mud for a nugget of gold
To treat and weave between calloused hands
Into something beautiful.
Limbs shiver from the cold
Brain fogged with fatigue
It would be so easy to stop.
But that’s happened before.
And you regret it every time.
Regret the treasures you planned but never built
The time you spend digging with no spoils
The dreams you cast out only to starve.
It’s the midpoint.
There’s no sign of the finish line.
But you dig down deep into the earth
Down to your shoulder, feeling blind
For that next little nugget of gold.
And this time. You will find it.

NaPoWriMo - Day 14
Your Worst Enemy
Air burns in your chest
You can’t do this
Your limbs losing strength
It’s a waste of time
Head too heavy to look up
It’s a waste of energy
Too afraid to meet their eyes
You’ll never succeed
Each step is so painful
Not when you’re this useless
Dragging reluctant feet and heavy arms
They are so much better than you
The next step feels impossible
You can’t hope to compare
But you take it anyway
You can’t hope to compete
Raise arms that try to turn to jelly
You will make a fool of yourself
Lift your head that wants to crouch and cower
They’re going to judge you
You know that you will lose
They’ll know the truth about you now
But failure is only temporary
Just give up
So try again

NaPoWriMo - Day 13
Sherwood
There is nothing wild here anymore. No unruly underbrush beyond nettles and bluebells, kept away from wide paths made safe for buggies and bikes. Dive into the trees, stray from the road and still, every few steps there is a well trodden trail to overlap with another walker. Nature is alive and well and green and cultivated. A clearing here. A signpost to civilisation there. Artificial wilderness, made pretty for the masses to tramp over and ogle all the way to the crown jewel of the forest. In a throne of pillars bearing the weight of branches too old, too heavy, too worn by hands touching and feet treading.
But in the heart, where the trails are thin
You can see the trees speak to each other
Years of challenges and truces
Over sun and wind and space
Stretching out in branches that never touch.
Higher and higher, making bridges
For birds to rest and sing
And squirrels to skip over.
Winds whisper and whip through the trunks
Into a roar that echoes through the woods.
You could believe that creatures roam here
Those that hide from our touch wander
To hunt and herd and fight and live.
In the heart, away from our world,
The wild gathers and grows
And sings its symphony.

NaPoWriMo - Day 12
The Dungeon's City
Ghostly city carved of stone
Narrow brickwork alleys
Stretching from wall to wall
Within the monstrous chasm
Silent but for the squatters
Sneaking across cobblestones
To scout and hunt and raid
Avoiding icy spectres
Bound to life in limbo
Praying for a final end
For the torment to stop
For the Mad Mage to rest.
But no. No first comes fire
Scarlet scales growl and glimmer
Glowing eyes scan for something
Hunting. Hunting. Hunting.
For a legacy long gone.

NaPoWriMo - Day 11
Another
Another call
Another step forward back to step one
Another plaster over broken bones
Still trying to bear weight
Another day with traitorous thoughts
Threatening my every breath
Waiting to be told how to live with them
Never rid of them, just exist with them
Another day of praying this time will work
That I won't need to be worse
before they help me get better
Another waiting list, waiting, waiting,
Waiting to be fixed
To be told I'm not broken
To be told I'm unfixable
To be told I'm fine
To be told it's all in my head
