Kind of wild that Robert Jordan wrote about a society of people that coped with an incredibly traumatic past by having the layperson so disconnected from the memories of their ancestors that they'd forgotten who they were while they were led by a select few who were burdened with horrible, but perspective giving truth at roughly the same time that Lois Lowry was writing about a society that coped with the difficult parts of human nature by repressing the things that made them human in order to avoid experiencing difficult memories and emotions with the exception of a select few leaders who were burdened with horrible, but perspective giving truth.

Absolutely no idea what could have been going on in the late 80's and early 90's to drive two individuals who spent a significant portion of their lives living in militarized environments and surrounded by war to tell stories about how lack of historical knowledge and empathy can tear apart a society while breeding violence and cruelty.

In such perfect synchronicity? Must have been something in the water. Anyway, I'm sure it's not poignant now.

Oh my gosh. I just found this website that walks you though creating a believable society. It breaks each facet down into individual questions and makes it so simple! It seems really helpful for worldbuilding!

I'd say it's from a desire to stay connected to her roots. Each Aes Sedai still retains parts of where they were from, from the way they speak to the way they dress. It's more a part of their cultural identity than an "eternal teenager" thing imho.

Siuane Sanche came to the Tower at 15, took her oaths at 22, became Amyrlin at 33 and is now... roughly my age. Maybe a little older.

And she's still using fishing metaphors for everything.

This is like if I exclusively talked in Beatles references. Is the point *supposed* to be that all these women have arrested development because of being in the tower, cut off from society? Are they meant to be written as basically eternal teenagers even if they're actually old enough to know how to behave?

Why are all Aes Sedai so very bad at being Aes Sedai, in the same way my accent has been changed by living outside of my homestate for more than 8 years, the Aes Sedai should pretty much have all lost their regional accents and begun to have a distinct accent of their own. But they don't.

Does the Oath Rod freeze them? Is there something going on, or is this just entirely bad writing?
