Knitting versus crochet is only separated through quality of weave, crochet is almost always mesh-based (and containing holes) whereas knitted pieces can be— depending upon yarn size and needle point number— completely flush with the nearest knot and can form, usually, an actual fabric. Therefore knitting is more useful generically, as it can be mesh-based and mimicking as crochet can look, wherein crochet cannot mimic and can only be itself.
