🎞️ thoughts
finally got around to watching Priscilla. being a huge Coppola fan, this was one of my most anticipated features of last year, but i never got around to it because i was waiting to see it in cinemas - it still hasn't premiered in Portugal but i just couldn't wait any longer. after the Blonde fiasco, i was hesitant to dive into another famous woman biopic but since Priscilla herself was involved in production, i had high expectations - and GOD, were they met. this movie had a delicacy and a sensibility that showed immense respect to the source material. there were so many breathtaking scenes, but i’m mainly in love with Cailee's performance. she became Priscilla in a way that i don't see many actors do with their characters - her look when Lisa-Marie ran into the nanny's arms left me ON THE FLOOR. Sofia also did an amazing job with directing. my favorite subtleties were the Channel 5 perfume parallel, Priscilla doing her makeup while in labor, and also she gradually stopping dyeing her hair black when Elvis started growing more and more distant. it’s astonishing how much she could tell us about the characters through the little things. it’s not yet a five-star for me, but i can see it becoming one after a rewatch. i think i was too mesmerized with everything to let it fully sink in. i felt myself trying to pay attention to every single detail, and that might have been detrimental to my overall enjoyment. can't wait to rewatch it in theaters so i can finally decide if this is a five-star. one of the things that left me on the edge between a 4.5 and a 5 was the ending. i think it told the story it had to tell, but the last 20 minutes felt rushed. maybe the real events were rushed but it translated as a pacing issue.

You're losing me to a life of my own. I have to go. If I stay, I'll never leave.

past lives (2023)
🎞️ watched 13.01.24 🎞️ rating 4.5/5 ☆

It's true that if you leave you lose things, but you also gain things, too.
🎞️ thoughts
we all have our "what if?" moments; we doubt every single one of our choices; and reflect on how we could have done something different. even if we're content, we can't stop thinking about a million happy endings that we are missing out on by living through this one. past lives play with the concept of losing what you never had - what you could have had. the bed sequence is one i see myself going back to in the future. it's beautifully shot, in a way that portrays intimacy and distance simultaneously, and the dialogue is one of the best writing i've seen in a while.
You know you only talk in Korean when you talk in your sleep? You never sleep talk in English. You only dream in Korean. You dream in a language I can't understand. It's like there's this whole place inside you I can't go.
i found this feature moving in so many ways. i too reflect if i'm making the right choices, if i'm losing something greater, if there's always going to be a distance between myself and the people i love - there are so many places inside us, too many for even ourselves to truly understand the self.

What if this is a past life as well, and we are already something else to each other in our next life? Who do you think we are then?

finished herland… i understand the importance of this story, and it has some great ideas/concepts, but it’s severely outdated. i need to collect my thoughts to write a full review but i think it’s a 2.5! wish i had the physical (instead of the audiobook) so i could underline some quotes

leave the world behind (2023)
🎞️ watched 01.01.24 🎞️ rating 2.5/5 ☆

There is no going back to normal.
🎞️ thoughts
leave the world behind was an interesting one. it relies heavily on the fear of the unknown and does a good job of building tension, but it overall fails to deliver on any of it - which i understand wasn’t the point of the movie, but it made it frustrating anyway. i enjoyed the discussions around trust, and if humans can or cannot rely on each other for cooperation in a crisis. besides that, everything about the “end of the world” scenario was generic. contrary to popular opinion, i wasn't a fan of the performances, especially Julia Roberts'. i think her role as director made her take more risks with the acting, which isn't necessarily a bad thing but in this case, transcribed as forced and overly dramatic in comparison to the tone of the movie - in one word: pretentious! its strongest suit is the camera work: leave the world behind presents plenty of creative angles that push you in and out of the scenery and make you feel as lost as the characters.

I think I’m done waiting.
said the little girl before running away to watch friends (so valid!).

west side story (2021)

oh, the power of a poorly casted character... i'm going to be 100% frank, my least favorite thing was having to painfully watch Ansel Elgort trying to portray Tony. honestly, i don't think the story works well as a movie; not everything can be translated into different media and west side story shines as a musical stage production, and goes shallow when played on the screen. on another note, Rachel Zegler is incredible in everything she does, and i was mesmerized by her performance as María! i'm a die-hard romeo+juliet fan so any retelling catches my interest and even though this wasn't a favorite, it was still enjoyable.
How many can I kill, Chino? How many? And still have one bullet left for me?

while you were sleeping (1995)
🎞️ watched 23.12.23 🎞️ rating 3.5/5 ☆

🎞️ thoughts
surprisingly, i had never seen this one before. tbh, i didn't even know it was a christmas movie, just picked it out because i knew it was a classic '90s rom-com and that was what I was in the mood for. overall, there's not much where i can comment. it wasn't surprising but neither did it disappoint, it did exactly what i was expecting and that was great. the plot is completely unrealistic but the actors do a good job in making you not care about that. the highlight of the movie was, without a doubt, sandra bullock's performance. she plays the only (sorry male lead!) multidimensional character and manages to be funny without being too awkward or quirky. she was a delight to see on screen and i'm looking forward to checking out the other more unserious roles she played in her youth since i've mainly just watched her more recent, more intense projects.
