{what could have been} || athena/severus au
...
Not long after their first night together, Severus turned his back on the Death Eaters and his search for power. Thanking his lucky stars that he hadn’t already pledged himself wholly and taken the Dark Mark, Severus severed the ties to pureblood society that he’d so carefully made. That craving for power, that hole inside him, had been filled with Athena and all of the love and kindness she had to share. Her words were true when she said that she would never leave him, and even when he had told her what he’d done, what he had planned to do, Athena stroked his cheek and told him it was okay. Her comforting presence was all he’d needed, and with the promise of strong protection wards put up around her apartment, the deed was done. His ties were severed, and they moved forward into life together.
...
It hadn’t taken long for Severus to move into her apartment completely. It started slowly, he never really left after their first night together other than to go to work, and gradually he brought things back from his sleeping space at Hogwarts. First it was his potions ingredients and journals, some of which already resided in her apartment anyway. Then some of his books appeared and they put up some new shelves to house them all. They’d never officially decided that he was moving in, but neither of them wanted to be apart from the other any longer than they needed to. A month or so after his things had started to appear, Athena put her foot down, saying that if they were going to do this they should do it properly and they set aside a Saturday to properly move the rest of his belongings in. Her apartment was almost full to bursting with her own belongings now mixed with his, along with all of the magical creatures that still happily resided with them. Raven had taken to Severus well after he’d healed her, and she liked to lay and watch while he brewed potions. They found an easy companionship, so much so that when Severus built his potions work space he ensured that there was a little cubby hole that Raven could lie in to watch him.
Nothing had ever felt more natural than coming home to Severus Snape and their pets.
...
They’d been together for a year, each day a new adventure. Evenings were spent eating snacks, and honestly, Athena didn’t know how they both weren’t fat already. Weekends were spent spurring each other on into new levels of knowledge - Severus was still teaching her how to brew potions and she was getting better each day. In her spare time she was slowly putting together some rough notes on a book about magical creatures. It was a slow task, but one which was deeply rewarding. For now though they’d gone away for the weekend, a few days in Belgium. They’d stayed in Brussels, and on the day of their one year anniversary they visited the Hallerbos forest. Walking among the bluebells, Athena pointed out each small magical creature that poked their head out with excitement, and Severus had to remind her at points that there were muggles around and she couldn’t just yell about occamys and fairies without people thinking she was mad. She just couldn’t help herself.
The stars were bright that night, shining and gleaming so clearly. They lay together in a hammock, hands entwined as Athena tried to point out constellations with her free hand. She’d never been the best at finding actual constellations, but she was good at making up her own. In true Athena Fawley style a few bowtruckles had hitched a ride in her hair, and they were lazily running over her stomach as the pair lay peacefully, basking in the quiet of the night. What she didn’t know was that Severus had asked her favourite bowtruckle, the one that had basically made a permanent residence amongst her curls, for help in an important matter. Lost in the stars, Athena barely even noticed the way Severus’ hands trembled as he asked her to sit up. However a few seconds later, her own hands began to tremble as she noticed that Kermit was holding a ring out, and when she looked back up at Severus with a look of shock, all she saw in his eyes was love.
“I often thank every higher power, each day, that you asked me to befriend you that day in the bistro…that you brought me into your home, allowed me to enter your life. Before, my heart was hardened, and closed off from everyone and the world. But, the friendship you created, struck me to my very core. You made me feel things I never thought I could; reminded me of parts of myself I had long forgotten. You chipped your way through the ice until you warmed my heart completely in your hands. In short, I came alive when I met you. Now, I have come to love you with every fibre of my being. My heart, body, and soul are yours forever more, if you’ll have me. Athena, will you marry me?”
How could she say anything but yes?
...
Athena heard a knock at her door, a slight tremble in her hands as she did opened it. She knew what Fabian thought of Severus - who he thought he was, and Athena wanted to set the record straight. She knew that her cousin might have reservations, but she really wanted his blessing on the relationship. Her mother and father tried hard to stay out of wizarding politics but Athena had an inkling after the forbidden forest that Fabian was more involved than he tried to let on. Severus had told her everything, of course. What he’d done, what he was going to do. But that was all behind them now.
She had two strong cups of tea ready when he arrived, and her left hand was hidden in a jacket pocket. At her request, they were waiting until Athena managed to speak to Fabian before announcing it to others. Only their parents knew up until now, and a part of Athena sought Fabian’s blessing, knowing she wouldn’t truly be happy until things were set right. A warm smile towards her cousin, Athena sat down to explain it all. Severus had been leaning towards the darkness, but she had guided him to the light. Any ties he had were severed, and they were moving on into life together free of all ties to the war on either side. They’d lived quite privately for the last year, trying to lie low while the war raged around them. They’d found their own peace of paradise, their own heaven on earth in each other’s arms. Fabian listened quietly as she spoke, but Athena couldn’t look at him. Not until she uncovered the ring on her finger and said “he’s family now.”
Fabian was staring at the ring on her finger, and Athena didn’t miss the way he visibly winced at her words. Her heart sank a little, fearing that Fabian would never accept him. “He’s not family! You are. But … look, I don’t trust him, but I can see he loves you. So if this is really what you want, I’ll be there for you. And… Severus.” Hearing his first name leave Fabian’s lips was confirmation enough for Athena. It was the first time he’d used Severus’ first name, and a smile tugged at her lips as she threw her arms around Fabian.
“Thank you, cousin.”
...
Once Athena had told Fabian, the couple could finally start telling other people. The first thing she wanted to do was to tell her best friend. Daisy had been gone for most of the first year she was with Severus, researching muggle life, and Athena missed girl time so much. They’d written to each other, but muggle post seemed to take an age to reach Daisy and so they hadn’t really spoken properly other than the few times Athena had been to visit. But now she had big news. She’d planned it all out - muggles had a tradition of bringing a gift when asking someone to be your bridesmaid, and so Athena had a small gift bag in tow. With her left hand hidden in her pocket, Athena apparated to Daisy’s home with a beaming smile. It didn’t take her long after saying hello that Athena took her hand out to show Daisy the ring, happy tears filling her eyes. “Daisy I love him so much...it’s like I came alive when he came into my life.”
Passing Daisy the gift bag which contained a dainty bracelet with Daisy’s initials and the words ‘maid of honour’, Athena looked up at her friend with hopeful eyes. “Would you....I’d love if you’d be my maid of honour.” There was a brief moment where Athena feared her friend might say no, but her reaction was enough to bring a wide smile to her lips.
"Of course Athena! I would love to!" Daisy squealed, pulling Athena in for a hug, "Of course, of course! But, Merlin there's so much to do, dress shopping, decorations, a bachelorette party. But anything you need, you know I'll be there for you! And I'll be coming home in a month, so we can do better planning then!"
...
Their wedding was an intimate affair, and it was everything Athena dreamed of as a small girl. Just their close friends and family were present, and that was enough. Severus’ mother came dressed in her best, excited to welcome her daughter-in-law into the family officially. Daisy was her maid of honour, dressed in a beautiful yellow dress which Athena had helped her pick out. She hadn’t wanted anyone else to stand with her as her bridesmaid, there was no one as close to her as Daisy. Athena wore her mother’s wedding dress which had been carefully preserved for her all these years. Her father walked her down the aisle, and Athena was certain that she’d seen a glint of tears in Severus’ eyes when he’d set eyes on her for the first time.
The wedding had changed everything. Severus was practically a new man now; born again from light and love, rather than darkness and pain. And, much like a snake, he had to shed the old self - all of the pity, anger, and so much more. He had to carry on the Prince name - for himself, and his family. But he also wanted the Fawley name permanently attached. After all, it was Athena Fawley that helped rebuild the man he had become. Severus wanted all to know - and their children to carry on a grand legacy with two powerful and meaningful names - not to be used against anyone, but to always lend a helping hand whenever need be; whenever asked for it. The two had agreed early on in their engagement that they would forge a new identity with their marriage - moving forward together in life as the Fawley-Prince family.
The world seemed to stop as they exchanged their vows, pledging to love and protect each other no matter what the world threw at them. It was as if they were the only ones in the room; he was all she would ever need, and vice versa. Athena cried with happiness as Severus slid her wedding ring onto her finger, and despite what the priest wanted she threw her arms around him and hugged him so tightly, unable to help herself. They whispered ‘I love yous’, sharing their first kiss as the Fawley-Princes with beaming smiles.
...
Encouraged by Severus she’d left her job at Eeylops shortly after they’d married, choosing to put her research on magical creatures and the writing of her book first. He now worked full time at Hogwarts, and she’d moved with him to a home not that far from Hogsmeade. It was a reasonably sized home, bought with the intent for it to be big enough to house children as well as all their things, but as per usual, the amount of magical creatures that joined them as they moved made the place feel much smaller. They had a study each, one full of notes on magical creatures and the other full of potions and new spells that he was creating. Athena was amazed at the way his mind worked, she’d never even considered the possibility of creating a new spell and yet here her husband was, with reams and reams of pages full of magic that he’d created. His mind, the way he was so passionate about magic and potions, spurred her on to find new methods to understand magical creatures, and the way that wizards could relate to them. Her notes on her book were growing day by day, and a rough first edit was starting to take form. Athena was constantly inspired by her husband’s passion for his work, and he was inspired by her passion for her field and together they began to write and write.
...
Athena had always yearned for children, for a family of her own to care for and cherish. Molly and Arthur had recently had their sixth child, another ginger baby full of smiles named Ronald and Athena was returning home from a visit to see her new relative. There was such a yearning within her, and as she opened the door to their home she was greeted with the scent of Severus cooking dinner. Wrapping her arms around her husband’s waist, she pressed a soft kiss to his cheek. “Evening Athena, how are the Weasleys?” He asked, much of his attention still focused on dinner. She turned his cheek so he was looking straight at her, and she captured his lips without a word. They kissed passionately for a moment before she drew back, murmuring against his lips: “I think we should try for a baby.”
Dinner was abandoned without second thought.
....
The first time Athena felt their child kick inside her they were lying outside their home atop a picnic blanket underneath the stars. Much of their lives were spent in the great outdoors these days; Athena’s mother had spent much of her time outdoors when pregnant with her and recommended she did the same, said it was good for the baby. On warm evenings she lay outside admiring the stars, and Severus joined her most evenings he wasn’t on duty at Hogwarts. Ever since they’d found out she was pregnant Severus had waited on her hand and foot, always happy to do anything for her and tonight it was simply a cup of tea while they admired the stars together. Then finally she felt him - their son, the life that kicked inside her. A small gasp escaped her lips as she guided Severus’ hands to her stomach and he kicked again. Such love filled her heart immediately, and she knew that she would do anything for the child that rested within her womb.
...
“Say goodbye to Daddy!”
Athena beamed as Sebastian raised a chubby hand, waving at Severus as he stood at the end of the garden path, preparing to walk to Hogwarts.
Sebastian Fawley-Prince was the first born of their children. He had the curliest hair you’ve ever seen on a baby, and the bowtruckles that loved to make their home amongst Athena’s hair soon happily began to do the same to her son. When he was young Athena would take him for play-dates with Arthur and Molly’s children and he adored Ginny Weasley, who was the same age as him. Athena had never spent much time with other wizards growing up, but wanted her children to spend as much time with their extended family as possible. Following Fred and George’s lead in particular he was a cheeky child, but it warmed Athena’s heart whenever she saw him loving his cousins so much. He had his father’s aptitude for potions and was soon helping Severus at the cauldron before he’d even started Hogwarts. He easily topped his classes when he got there - as if he could ever do anything other than excel at potions with Severus Snape as his father.
Artemis Fawley-Prince was named by Athena, wanting to at least have one child with a Greek name in keeping with her father’s love for the mythology. Athena and Severus spent their evenings with her as a young child reading her the myths of the goddess who shared her name, wanting their daughter to be as strong as Artemis. Named for the goddess of the wilderness, it seemed natural she would take on her mother’s love for magical creatures and herbology. Artemis could entertain herself for days in the wilderness near to their home, playing in the brook and seeking out any magical creature in sight. In the evenings she’d come home and help her mother bake all sorts of sweet treats and wholesome meals, having such a strong mother-daughter relationship. But Artemis was the apple of her father’s eye and had him wrapped around her little finger, knowing if mama said no daddy would say yes.
Theodore Fawley-Prince was the last of their children. His birth was difficult and for a few moments the healers at St Mungoes weren’t sure if mother or baby would make it, but then his cries filled the hospital room and Athena and Severus held their son close. Severus didn’t let either of them go for the longest time as they cradled each other and their son in the hospital room, all three of them exhausted. Theo’s smile could light the whole room up, and he was so kind and gentle to all he met when he was a young boy. As he grew a little older though he grew a rebellious streak, wanting to seek out a little power of his own. His father sat in down and showed him some darker magic carefully, believing that it was safer for his son to be shown by his father privately than for him to discover it encouraged by darker minded purebloods. He insisted that his son only used lighter magic, and after a brief foray into darkness with his father, Theodore pledged that he would only use light magic. Father and son agreed that if Severus ever caught him using dark magic anywhere other than the privacy of their home, they would make an unbreakable vow to ensure he couldn’t do it again.
Their children fit in so easily at Hogwarts. Severus tried to stay out of their way other than in potions lessons, knowing his children wouldn’t appreciate him hovering over their shoulder and instead the pair gave their children room to grow and develop. Sebastian found his home amongst the Gryffindors, Artemis fit into her mother’s old home of Hufflepuff and Theodore embodied Slytherin values through and through. It warmed Athena’s heart that her three children were all so unique and yet so similar at the same time, and she had so much love for their family.
...
All three children had strong magic, with their children mastering difficult spells at a young age. Athena knew that skill came largely from Severus rather than herself, The rule about children not performing magic outside Hogwarts went largely ignored in the Fawley-Prince household. Severus taught his children the magic he’d created, and helped them master some difficult spells such as the patronus charm. It came about one summer night, when Artemis mentioned that the Defence Against the Dark Arts professor had said just how difficult it might be. Athena and Severus showed their children their own patronuses - Athena’s small field mouse, and Severus’ doe. Artemis was desperate to try it herself, and with some coaching from Severus, a dolphin burst from the tip of her wand. Theodore wasn’t about to be shown up by his older sister, and he had the next go. His patronus soared in the sky, a Falcon that danced amongst the clouds. Sebastian’s patronus took the form of an Otter, darting around him playfully. The garden was full of five patronuses, dancing in the sunset.
Athena’s arms encircled her husband’s waist, and she pressed a kiss to his shoulder as they watched their children in amazement at their skill.
“How did we get so lucky?”
....
Not long after Theodore began to attend to Hogwarts, Athena found that her days were suddenly free once more. Without three children to care for each day, and a husband that was away at work all day, she could finally put all her energy back into writing her book on magical creatures. On a rare occasion, she would fill in for a lesson or two of Care of Magical Creatures at Hogwarts, but by and large her energy was solely focused on the book that she’d begun so many years ago. She dug out the rough first draft that had ended up buried amongst other work in her study, and sat down to read it once more. Two years later, and it was finally published.
‘What Magical Creatures Can Teach Us’ by Athena Fawley-Prince.
She didn’t think she’d ever been so proud of her own achievements in her whole life as when she saw it on sale in Flourish and Blotts right beside Newt Scamander’s work.
They had a launch party between their friends and family, and Severus pulled her aside half way through, pressing a gentle kiss to her temple. His support while she was writing had meant everything, and Severus had never doubted for a minute that his wife would end up a published author.
“I always knew you could do it.”
...
The darkness that Magor spoke of never came. Athena had decided as they moved into retirement that his words must have simply been lies, spoken out of a distrust of Fabian. If there was a word she would use to describe her life, it certainly wouldn’t be unfulfilled. They were old now - her children had their own families and had long since moved out of their Hogsmeade house, and Severus was retiring from Hogwarts soon. Presently it was the summer holidays, and that meant Severus was at home all the time once more. This was always Athena’s favourite time of year - she didn’t begrudge him his job, he was an excellent teacher, but secretly she did wish that she could spend more time with her husband.
The garden was peaceful as the couple sat on the grass, hands entwined. The silence allowed Athena to ponder her life. She had always striven to work for kindness and goodness, even after the war ended. Severus and their life together was proof that you never knew the power a smile could have. Kindness had brought her a husband, and a wonderful family that she loved with her whole heart. The Fawley-Princes. Her life had been full of happiness and love, a love that came so easily and had never dimmed. It burned as brightly as the sun danced across the horizon. Their love for each other was pure, authentic.
Perfect.
...
“I love you, Severus.”
“I love you too, Athena.”

thehalfbloodprince-always:
It’s too late, Severus heard Athena say, even with her voice as lost as it was. He shook his head. The words echoed throughout his mind, his own heart dropping into his stomach at the mere thought of it. No. It couldn’t be too late. It just couldn’t! His talents in potions and obsession with the dark arts couldn’t have been for nothing. “No.” Severus shook his head once more, gulping. His own throat strained from his own cries from the torture they endured.
Not now. Not like this. It was all he could think. For the first time in his life, someone had offered a friendship that had blossomed - filled with unconditional love. All for it to be torn away from him.
“Athena…” Severus said brokenly. Tears threatened to escape his eyes, his heart shattering into pieces the more she continued. He was in denial of it all. It was too soon for this to end. For their love to end. Never had he felt this way. Never had he loved someone like this; loved someone like her. His hands, stained with blood, cradled her face gently, “You have to stay awake,” he whispered, “you have to stay with me.”
Watching as the incantations healed all of her outer wounds, Severus wracked his mind to think of what would help internally. He had to save her. There was no way he could lose her now. Not after they had found their love - and had such a bright future to look forward to. Not when he was giving up everything to be on the side of good. It was too soon. Far too soon. And he cursed his old comrade; the centaurs, all those who knew and took part in this darkness that had consumed her. And it was all because of him…
“Please…don’t…” Severus’ breath was shaken, blinking as Athena rested her hand on his cheek. Throat closing tighter and tighter, he was choking on the cries that wanted to escape. Leaning into her touch, Severus looked at their intertwining fingers. “I can’t lose you, love.” he whispered, closing his eyes as he brought her hand to his lips, kissing it before pressing closer. Aching all over, he felt like part of him was dying with her, only able to sit idly by and watch - his vision blurred from the tears that had fallen from his eyes, sliding down his face as they kissed once more. His lips brushed against hers, lingering as though it would save her.
When she began searching his eyes, Severus gazed at her, trying to convey just how much he loved her. However his sorrow was much more prevalent. How could he have let this happen? How could he not have been strong enough? Expression pained, he shut his eyes tightly. If he agreed to this promise, it meant he was accepting that these were her last breaths. He couldn’t. Yet, his whole being trembled as he said, “I promise,” but shook his head; not wanting to accept it just yet.
Although as she tore away from him, Severus felt his an electricity down his spine, body growing cold, “Athena…Athena, you have to keep fighting,” he whispered, clutching her hand - just wanting it to be some cruel joke; a lie. Anything - as long as this wasn’t the end.
“I love you, Athena Fawley.” Severus Snape replied back whole-heartedly. His thumbs brushed the tears from her eyes, his forehead resting on hers. Athena’s body became still, feeling the heat leaving from her very being. Severus looked at her incredulously, her body lifeless. No. No it couldn’t - “Please don’t go…” he murmured against her lips as if it would keep her soul there with him, tears falling from his eyes as his body quivered from his cries.
“You’re all I have, Athena. All I love,” a broken sob escaped his lips, holding her carefully. Practically clinging to her as if his own breath would breathe life back into her. Weeping in her arms, and Athena in his, Severus held her close wishing on all of the cosmos - all of the energy in his damned world - to bring her back.

thehalfbloodprince-always:
Under the silver mask, Rodolphus smirked. He watched as the plume of darkness engulfed the young woman. It was a spell he had learned from other talented wizards in Romania, used to such darkness and dark creatures around them. He had no idea what the effects would be, this being the first time he’d used it on another, and was enthralled. His concentration on the Cruciatus Curse wavered, watching in fascination.
All of her pain, all of her screams, were music to his ears. A sweet melody - no - a triumphant anthem for his revenge. Revenge on Fabian. Revenge on Severus. Blood traitors. Now their debt was paid in the magical blood spilt from the one they loved.
A string of laughter came as Athena was lifted up from the ground. Soon, he knew, she would be dead. Once she hit the ground, Lestrange shook his head. It was unfortunate that she had been a Pureblood. But a traitor, all the same. About to finish off the other, Rodolphus heard a noise, confounded. How had the younger man manage to break from an Unforgivable Curse? Even if his concentration had only broke for a moment?
“Severus Snape,” he sneered, turning as the other pointed his wand at him once more.
There was a sharp chill throughout his body, stamping the fires away and piercing what felt like every nerve. The Cruciatus Curse; something Severus should have been used to by now. It was often new recruits were tested. Tortured until they soiled themselves or started to go mad. Still, no matter how many times he was put under the curse, the pain was unbearable. His passion, fuel to fight for good, however, did not cease even with it.
Once there was a brief moment when the pain subsided, Severus knew he had to take the chance. Gulping, he broke from the curse. But not in time. Not in enough time to hear the spell Lestrange had used- only to gaze in horror as the one he loved was fully immersed by darkness. Athena’s cries broke his heart, aching to help her. Tears rimmed his eyes as he stood, staggering. Rodolphus would pay, he told himself. Would pay for what he did to her.
Breathing heavily, Severus shouted the Unforgiveable Curse, “Crucio!” watching as Rodolphus was thrown back. The fire in his eyes was anew - burning brighter than ever. Concentrating on his hatred, Severus - wandlessly - cast the Incarcerous Spell, glaring as the Death Eater was bound and gagged, writhing on the floor. It wasn’t enough. Lifting his wand once more, Severus cast one of his original spells, “Levicorpus,” smirking as he was lifted from the ground, shouting out in frustration and pain. With Athena as badly hurt as she was, he knew his concentration would break and had to take him out so that he could help her; heal her. Anything to bring her back from that darkness that had consumed her.
Running to Athena, Severus paid no mind to his injuries, only falling right beside her. He called her name, weakened and terrified as his eyes scanned her warily. If only he had heard the spell Rodolphus had used. Then his attempts with reversal spells would not have been futile. Shaking, Severus brought out a bottle of dittany, pouring it over her wounds, trying to heal her that way.
“Hold on…hold on…” he repeated, tears trembling from his eyes, “Athena, breathe. I’ll take care of you; get you out of here. Just, hold on, love!” Severus cried out, holding her, but careful of her injuries, murmuring spells to heal her broken bones; even using the song-like incantation of Vulnera Sanentur.
It was too late.
If her heart wasn’t already mere minutes away from giving up on her tired body and taking her to a higher place, seeing Severus so desperately try to heal her would’ve torn it in two - a pain that could never be healed. “Sev....it’s too late,” she whispered, her vocal chords straining with the effort it took to speak.
She was tired. So tired.
The wounds on the outside of her body were beginning to heal - greenish smoke plumed upwards and her wounds no longer looked fresh and aching but instead days old. But there was too much internal damage - Athena had never heard of the spell that Rodolphus had used, the man that was now hanging in the air just as she had just moments ago, but she knew that without a proper reversal spell to the internal damage anything Severus could do was futile.
“Severus....please,” she breathed, tears slipping from her eyes so easily. “I just want to rest....I’m so tired,” she sighed, her chest heaving with the effort that it was taking her to speak those few words. With her bones now fixed, Athena summoned everything within her to push herself up onto her elbows so she could look at Severus properly.
How she wished that they had more time.
Together they could have accomplished great things and lived a life full of such love - battling through their difficulties together. Athena could have done so much more if only she’d had time. She’d already begun privately making plans to leave Eeylops and start researching magical creatures properly, finally living out her dream...a dream that would die with her. The ideas for her book would remain scruffy drafts on sheets of parchment nobody would ever read. And her hope of having a family just like Molly, little cousins for Fabian and Gideon to dote upon...futile.
Time was a cruel thief, snatching so much life away before it could even truly begin.
Lifting her hand to rest it on Severus cheek, she gently guided his face down towards hers and brushed her lips gingerly against his. “It won’t work...” she sighed, her hand slipping from his cheek to find his. Entwining their fingers for what she knew would be their last time, Athena searched his eyes sadly.
“Will you tell them for me? Tell them I loved them....and I’m sorry. I’m sorry I had to go early,” her voice cracked. She was sure Severus would know who she meant - Daisy, Tilden, Fabian, Gideon. Her parents. Her friends would be so upset, and her mother and father losing their only daughter.... “Promise me, Sev....promise me you’ll tell them. I love them so much. They need to know.”
Closing her eyes again, Athena’s breaths were growing further and further apart. “I’m sorry....sorry I can’t be there for you anymore. I love you,” Athena paused, more tears falling from her eyes. “I will always love you, Severus Snape.”
She was so tired.
The elbow she was using to prop herself up gave way and Athena lay against the floor again, her curly hair still seeming to frame her face perfectly. “I think I need to sleep now,” Athena sighed. From behind her eyelids the black plume of smoke she had been engulfed within just a short period earlier seemed to rush back - ready to claim its victim. At least her hand was still clasped within Severus’ - at least she wouldn’t leave this world alone.
“I love you.”
With that, Athena Fawley breathed her last.

thehalfbloodprince-always:
Rodolphus could only smirk as Athena’s stunning spell flew past him, wishing she could see the face of the one about to kill her. This was his revenge. Never mind blasting material items to millions of pieces, scattered across a broken office. No. Hurting those his enemies loved - it was like a favorite drink to him; always craving and never sated. This was for an old foe as well as the one in front of him, fumbling for his wand. Betrayal was not tolerated and even if there was a slim inking, death was certain. Now here he was, in front of Severs Snape and his blood traitor of a lover; the cousin of an old enemy. This day could not be any sweeter than obtaining this vengeance.
“Pure?” Rodolphus scoffed, shaking his head, “You’re a blood traitor. Just like him,” he nudged his head towards Severus - who had caught sight of his wand, “And your oaf of a cousin.”
Watching the beginnings of his torture on her brought a smile to his lips. Oh how her screams filled him with such joy - as if giving him air to breathe. His chuckle muffled by the mask, Rodolphus reached for her wand, keeping close to Athena to watch the masterpiece he had created. Indeed, Lestrange was sick and twisted; finding pleasure in others’ torture, making it a game. Taking her wand, he inspected it closely.
“I wonder what it would feel like to be tortured by your own wand…” Rodolphus mused, keeping his concentration on Athena so that the torture curse would work its way well through her - soon begging for death. However, Severus broke that concentration with a simple spell - one he hadn’t anticipated the other would use. “Imperio!” he heard the younger man shout.
Blinking, Rodolphus’ desire to torture came to a halt, his gaze incredulous as he turned around to see Severus, his wand pointing straight at him. Taking deep breaths, he felt the power of the Imperius Curse, set him in a calm, trance-like state. Severus stalked closer to him, Rodolphus feeling his own feet being taken far away from Athena - who was now most likely released from his torture curse. However, he still had her wand, gripping it tight.
“Your fight is with me.” Severus narrowed his black eyes.
And Rodolphus had a trick or two up his sleeve. After serving the Dark Lord for so many years, he had learned to protect himself. Perhaps if Severus had stayed, received the dark mark, their master would have taught him such a useful trick. Hands clutched in a relentlessly tight hold, Rodolphus fought the imperius curse over him, snapping Athena’s wand in two.
A sigh of relief came from the masked figured, cracking his neck.
“That it is…”
Severus’ eyes betrayed him, stunned as Rodolphus broke away from his spell. He had already witnessed in the one he loved writhing in pain, watching in horror. While it was only for a moment, as he scrambled to find his wand to protect her, Severus’ heart ached for her, knowing how painful it was. His own eyes tearing up a bit seeing Athena in such a state. He would do anything to take it away from her, even transfer it all to himself. All to see that she would be safe from harm. No matter the cost. Severus knew he had to be strong, push those images away. If they were to make it out of this alive; fight against Rodolphus, he had to. Yet, she didn’t have her wand. Shaken, he yelled to Athena, “Find Fabian and go, Athena! Please,” he begged, and set his eyes on Rodolphus; his target.
A fire ignited in his veins, his will strong with only one goal in mind: fight; survive; for Athena, himself, and the other innocent lives in this attack. Someone would die tonight - and he swore on his mother’s name it would not be him.
Both shouted powerful spells at the same moment - expluso as Rodolphus’ signature spell; and confringo for himself. Both were equally skilled in nonverbal magic. Both knew plenty about the dark arts, curses, jinxes; anything they could cast at one another, they did. Even if Severus knew more magic, Rodolphus had more experience and was a great deal stronger than him physically. He would have to use any and all power at his disposal. Blood, sweat, and dirt muddying Severus’ clothes clothes as his leg nearly gave out underneath him, fighting tooth and nail.
Eventually, both apparated - practically ripping one another apart. Yet, with the weak spot in his limb, Rodolphus took advantage of his strength - shoving Severus away with the force of their heads colliding with one another sending him back. Breathing heavily, Rodolphus laughed as he caught Severus’ staggering body, pulling him close as his other hand shoved Athena’s broken wand up into his ribs. His cry of pain sent shivers down his spine, twisting the new weapon before pocketing it away.
Severus took in heavy, shaky breaths, falling to the ground below him. Eyes rimmed with tears, Snape knew he wouldn’t go down easily. And Lestrange knew this as well. His wand pointed to the other, Rodolphus shook his head. Fighting a turncoat was a battle he was not about to lose - an knocked Severus’ protruding nose with his knee - hard. He clicked his tongue as the other laid sprawled out on the ground, pointing his wand at him again, “Crucio,” he muttered nearly out of breath. The younger man had him running for his money, that was certain. Although his cries of pain filling the air made it worth it, walking up to Athena once more.
“Tenebris Resurget,” and watched as darkness began to engulf Athena.
Blood traitor.
This was exactly the sort of horror that her parents had hoped to keep her from - raising Athena to value love and kindness rather than the luck of being born into a pure-blooded family. To hear this Death Eater spew such hatred based on the fact that Athena would always choose love, would always choose kindness truly stunned her. And his mention of her cousin - Athena could only assume he meant Fabian and not Gideon. Fabian who seemed to be in over his head, especially if he’d managed to irritate this man.
Athena could clearly feel the power behind his hatred, power that flowed through his wand and set her every nerve ending alive. Faintly aware of Rodolphus speaking, Athena writhed under his ministrations. She knew there was little hope in fighting it off, but even submission didn’t make this any less painful. There appeared to be no end to the pain - no release coming. Surely she would pass out soon, surely her body would decide it couldn’t cope and simply give up.
Then suddenly the pain was gone.
Breathing heavily, Athena closed her eyes. She’d been crying - she knew that much for her face was wet, and her throat ached from screaming so loudly. Resting her head back against the floor, all she wanted to do was curl up into a ball and will herself into sleep. Now was not the time to rest - now was the time to grab Severus and to run, run as far and as fast as her feet would carry her.
Mustering every ounce of strength she had left in her tired body, Athena pushed herself up onto her elbows to look at Severus and Rodolphus who was moving almost as if he were sleep-walking. Fingers reaching for her wand which was no longer there, Athena looked around wildly to find it. Now more than ever she needed it, even if her defensive efforts were feeble. Focusing her gaze on Rodolphus, she spotted it too late - and now it was in pieces in his hands. A small gasp escaped her lips, and a few more tears slipped from her eyes.
Any hope she had of escape was quickly slipping away. No apparation, her body too weak to move quickly - her only hope was Severus overcoming this wizard, or that some other skilled wizard would come upon them and help them. Athena wanted to shake her head as Severus begged her to run, wanted to say she wouldn’t leave him here to die alone. Words failed her as she stood, torn between what to do. She was no help here without her wand, but she had a feeling that if she turned and ran the Death Eater would send a spell at her back.
Fabian would know what to do. But Athena had no idea where she’d even be able to find her cousin.
All she could do was watch in horror as the two men clashed, magic flying with such force and power from both sides of the fight. She barely even knew which spell was coming from which man at this point, her mind was so foggy with the aftermath of the cruciatus, as she took a few steps backwards away from the fight. Hearing Severus cry out in pain though had her feet moving involuntarily towards him. She couldn’t leave him like this, couldn’t let him die all alone in the world. Not like this.
Horror filled her as Severus went down, a broken nose for certain and suffering under the same spell she had been under just moments before. Now she was alone before a man that so clearly planned to murder herself and Severus - all for the crime of being in love.
Alone, wandless, useless.
A plume of black smoke engulfed her. It was a spell that she had never heard of before, and it seemed to consume her immediately. She was lifted off her feet, her eyesight blackening entirely. Images flashed before her - glimpses of a life she might have lived. A book title, wedding bands, the small feet of a child - each image flashed so quickly before being snatched away. An unfulfilled life. It felt like her chest was compressing, her throat constricting. Her bones were breaking - Athena was sure several of her ribs had cracked due to the compression in her chest, and each bone that snapped elicited another piercing scream of pain from Athena’s already aching throat.
The darkness will take you all the same.
Did Magor know? Had he known how true his words might be, or had it simply been an allegory for the war itself? Had Magor foreseen this - that she would end in in a cloud of pure darkness, a darkness that felt so deeply evil that it made everything within Athena churn. Then - just as quickly as the darkness had arrived, it vanished. She had been ten feet in the air and she dropped to the floor, bones cracking as she landed.
Each laboured breath was painful, and Athena closed her eyes. Death was not far away - everything within her screamed for release from this never ending pain that shot across her body. “Sev,” Athena whispered brokenly, unsure whether he was still being tortured himself. Help me. There was so much of her life left to live, so many things left to accomplish - and yet Athena knew that she was nearing her end. Centaurs did not lie, could not lie, and in her heart Athena knew that this was the darkness he had spoken of. She could not survive this. If this spell did not finish her off, something else would.
Her heart was already slowing, and she was almost ready to let go - to let the darkness claim her forever, a release from this horror, this pain. She just needed to say goodbye.
“Sev...”

thehalfbloodprince-always:
The night had started out in such bliss. So much so, that Severus wondered what on Earth he did to deserve the happiness that had been thrust upon him as of late. Never had his life favored him like this, so it was only natural that his paranoia would set in; fearing that the joy he now felt would be torn away from him. It was why, while their relationship was public, he tried to keep Athena close and away from large-scale events as the one they were celebrating at. They were an odd, yet obvious couple, when they were together; akin to the sun and moon. And while his ties to the Death Eaters had become loosened, they were not completely severed. As such, Severus paid careful mind to everything they did with each other; together.
To think, only hours before hand they were cheering on a quidditch match of all things; something Severus had quite detested at one time. However, he was doing whatever he could to make Athena as happy as she made him. That meant heeding her words when he proposed that the Ministry would have the celebration properly secured. Of course, he had no reason to believe there would be any attack, having been out of touch with most of the ones he had been conspiring with only a few months ago. Although, as the screams started, a chill ran up Severus’ spine. It could only mean one thing with tensions as high as they were in their world.
Immediately, his hand met hers as Athena reached for him, soon wrapping his arms around the one he loved, knowing he had to protect her at any cost. He knew in his heart and soul what he had to do. Now it was time to prove himself; prove he was worth the love and happiness given to him; capable of redemption. The chaos easily clouded others’ minds, but getting them to safety was his priority. Severus pulled her closer, trying to process all of the surrounding danger, but also his love for her and just how much he wanted to keep her safe from harm.
“Don’t part from me…We’ll make it out of this. Keep as close as you can and don’t let go, Athena.” he said calmly to try and ease her worry. Guiding her through the crowd, the mass of bodies proved for it to be difficult, but made sure they didn’t part, “Remember if we separate for any reason, find your way home - and I will be there as soon as I can,” he explained out of breath, making sure to put up a shield with his wand whenever a spell came too close.
Yet, his wand was suddenly ripped from his grasp as the words, “Blood Traitor!” were screamed at him from a distance. Severus knew the voice well - even if muffled from a mask. Eyes widened, he looked in the direction from where the voice came, putting Athena instantly behind him to put a barrier in between him and the masked figure.
“I knew it,” Rodolphus had whispered to another comrade just as the attack began, his eyes on the new couple before him. Severus Snape and Athena Fawley. “Turncoat,” his voice was full of venom and looked to the other masked figure beside him, “Leave them to me.”
Ever since Rodolphus had first seen the pair together in Diagon Alley, Lestrange watched the other young man with a keen eye. What was he doing with her? Trying to get himself a shoe-in with Pureblood? Yet, upon further investigation, and after what had come to pass with the Unspeakable, Rodolphus grew suspicious from Severus’ relationship with Prewett’s cousin. It didn’t sit well with him, not in the slightest. Especially once their prodigy stopped attending meetings and seeing less and less of him. What was the Slytherin boy up to?
However, seeing them so…intimate made his blood burn underneath the skin. Chaos ensued with the attack, the older male followed the pair with a keen eye. Severus could hold his own well, as he proved among the other recruits; but he was no match for a Lestrange. No match for a loyal follower that would not sit idly by as their property turned their back on the cause. Never.
A scream came from the top of his lungs, taking away his wand and to get their attention. Rodolphus sneered as Severus’ wand was taken away from a simple spell, looking to Athena. He smirked underneath the mask, holding up his own wand as he came closer. Bodies rushed around them, crying out.
“Prewett’s cousin…Athena, is it?” A dark chuckle surpassed his lips, watching as Severus moved in front of her, “Oh Snape…” he laughed fully, “you’ll just die in each other’s arms.” Lifting his wand, Rodolphus shouted, “Expulso!” grinning as Severus narrowly dodged the curse with Athena in his arms, but the explosion causing enough damage beside them - leaving the young man’s leg injured. Severus cursed in pain, but retrieved his wand from merely saying “accio,” to which Rodolphus blinked in surprise at the other’s skill in wandless magic. Taking advantage of the small moment of having the upper hand, Rodolphus ran closer to Athena - who had separated from their fall. The unforgivable curse escaped his lips easily, “Crucio!”
Athena trusted Severus.
She had put her trust in him early on in their friendship, which blossomed into something far more intimate, a love that touched each and every aspect of her soul. Even when others had told her to be wary, he is not a man to be trusted they’d whispered, Athena had gone with her heart. Her heart had told her that Severus just needed to be shown kindness, and the development of their relationship had shown that to be true. The world needed more kindness, instead of shying away from people because of their outward appearance.
Athena swore by that philosophy. And now she was putting her trust in Severus that he would protect them, protect her, amongst those he had chosen to leave. The masked figures that shed so much terror, figures she had largely managed to avoid up until this point. Her breathing was shaky but she was trying to desperately not to descend into panic - if they were going to get out of here safely, panicking would not help them.
Is Daisy okay?
There were so many here that she loved so dearly - Daisy, Tilden, Fabian. Thank God she hadn’t seen Molly. But were the others okay? That question would haunt her when she got home. Fabian especially....Athena knew in her heart that Fabian would not leave an event like this, he would stand and fight.
Listening carefully to what Severus said, Athena nodded. Her grip on his hand tightened ever more. Don’t let go. They had discussed before hand what to do if they did separate - they would meet back at her apartment, her apartment which was now so heavily warded against most visitors. Their safe place. A place that would always be a sanctuary. That was the contingency plan - if they could not get to safety together, then they must go separately no matter how worried it would make them.
Her heart sunk as Severus’ wand flew from his hand. Her grip tightened on her own, and she felt cowardly hiding behind Severus. Firing a stunning spell that sailed past the masked figure’s head, Athena froze as he looked directly at her. It was like staring directly at the face of death - and immediately a rush of panic flooded her chest, her heart beating so hard she was sure it might burst from her rib-cage.
“There is a shadow that even the brightness I see in you cannot overtake. It follows you. I see that you do not seek it, do not take part in the darkness, nor even act with those who fight it, but it will take you all the same.”
That was what Magor had said all those weeks ago in the Forbidden Forest. Words that had haunted her every waking moment - no matter how she tried to spin it as being something else she couldn’t shake the horror that Magor had meant that the Death Eaters would claim her. And here was Death himself, stood before her.
And Death knew who she was.
Her whole body was trembling as Death addressed her. You’ll die in each others arms. A sob ripped from her lips involuntarily, and she cursed herself for being so weak. “I’m pure-blooded. I’m pure,” she feebly protested, her fingers gripping Severus so tightly that her knuckles had whitened. If only she were more skilled with magic. The power behind his expulso caused a scream to rip from deep within her as carnage reigned around them. A few inches to the left and she’d have been in pieces - and as it was Severus was injured.
The force of the blast had ripped them apart and in the carnage her wand had rolled away, closer to where Rodolphus stood and she now lay on the floor a few feet away from Severus. Pushing herself up onto her elbows, she stared up with wide eyes as Death stared down upon her.
Athena had never felt serious pain before. When she was younger and ran around in the brook with the animals that surrounded their home, the most pain she ever felt was scraped knees. Her arms were scarred with small scratches from owls landing on her too heavily, or other magical creature related injuries. None of that pain had ever made a significant impact upon her - merely scrapes and scratches that she had complained about for a little while and then moved on from. The cruciatus brought every single nerve ending in her body alive - her body writhed in pain, her throat aching from how loudly she screamed.
Her body was alight, fire consuming every part of her, daggers pushing into her skin. It felt like a thousand snakes were crowding her, their fangs clenching into her skin all at once. The celebration from earlier this evening felt a thousand years away - and Athena knew in her heart she’d never be the same after this. Nobody could feel this sort of pain and remain happy, remain trusting.
Her brain was screaming for a release from this agony - whether she might simply pass out, unaware of what is continuing to rage around her body or whether it was the release of death. Releasing her to a place where this pain could not follow. She felt a thousand miles away from the party, lost in her own pain. Was Severus even beside her any more? Or had Rodolphus killed him while he tortured Athena? Not knowing was painful, but not as painful as this curse.
Her chest was caving in, her body was tearing in half. There was no way she could survive this curse. Biting the inside of her cheek firmly to stop herself screaming, Athena scrunched her eyes up and begged someone, anyone that might be listening to her thoughts, to kill her.
Anything was better than this pain.
Kill me.

How had the night turned out like this?
The pair had been uncertain, perhaps even anxious at the idea of going to an event that was so public. It was only Athena’s begging that ensured they managed to get tickets. A small ball in Ottery St Catchpole attended by muggles and wizards alike was one thing, but a match only attended by wizards including those Severus was seeking to leave was an entirely different issue. He had told her at the ball, of course, that he was not afraid to be seen with her and their relationship wasn’t hidden per se, as they spent most of their lunch breaks together in Diagon Alley, hands clasped together. If you watched the unlikely pair for more than a few seconds, it was obvious that they were a couple that were so deeply in love. But the ties he had made required some discretion - discretion that was difficult to ensure when you’re not sure who you’re sitting near at a quidditch match.
It had taken Athena quite some time to convince Severus that they would be safe at the match, surrounded by Ministry security and a large amount of aurors - at least, she suspected that there would be a large amount of aurors. There was no way the ministry would allow an event of this scale to take place without adequate security. But eventually Athena had her way and they’d purchased two tickets, secure in the knowledge that there would be enough security. And Athena knew that if anyone tried anything, Severus would protect them. Of course he would - his magic was far more powerful than her own. It was good for them to get out, to try new things. Their relationship couldn’t stay enclosed within the walls of her apartment and the bistro in Diagon Alley, no matter how safe those spaces felt. No they were going to go more public - like a proper boyfriend and girlfriend might. And so the couple had set out to have a pleasant and safe evening at the quidditch, followed by a few drinks at the victory celebration before returning home.
The match had passed brilliantly. Athena didn’t closely follow the League, nor a specific team despite her father’s best efforts, but she did love watching the sport and her voice was hoarse from cheering on Puddlemere, the team she had decided before the match that she was going to support. It appeared that luck was on her side tonight as Puddlemere had gone on to win. Her papa owed her some galleons now - he’d taken a bet with her to say Kenmare would win. It seemed that the night couldn’t be much better really, and Athena and Severus had found a bar and settled in with a drink each. Maybe after a few more they would have danced the night away before returning to her apartment to collapse into bed, giggling because of how drunk they were.
And yet - here they were. The night had not gone the way of dancing and drinking. Instead, the night was quickly becoming Athena’s worst nightmare.
Buildings were burning, people were running in every direction and the night was full of screaming. Exactly what Athena had assured Severus would not happen was happening - a masked Death Eater attack. Athena had never been so close to the danger of the war before, and never had she felt quite so vulnerable. Her magic certainly wasn’t strong enough to fend off a skilled Death Eater. Her fingers sought for Severus’, clasping his hand tightly as she looked at him with concern in her eyes. Her other hand gripped at her wand - even if she wasn’t confident in her defensive abilities she would be a fool to be running around with no wand while Death Eaters were loose. There were too many people running, too many touching them in order for them to safely apparate away.
“We need to get somewhere a little quieter so we can apparate,” Athena’s voice was wobbly, full of concern as she looked at Severus. Another screaming woman banged into Athena, sending her stumbling closer to Severus. It was only her grip on his hand that kept her upright. “Sev...we need to go. Now.”

unspeakableprcwett:
Athena,
I quite understand your difficulties - my life is rather full, too. That’s no excuse for not making time for you, of course. You’re an indispensable part of my life. So please, don’t doubt my willingness to come to you for advice.
I, too, however, have spared some time for research into the ways of the centaurs - their understanding of time is vastly different from our own ways. Any prediction of a ‘future’ they give is as likely to refer to a millenium in the past as anything in the present. Let’s not think on it. We had a bit of a scare, and I blame myself but there’s no cause to indulge in ridiculous fears.
As for your other point of news:
Even aside from the inherent danger in such a relationship, I know precisely what it is to fall in love with the wrong person, the worst person … it is utter misery, and to see it happen to you would be unbearable in every sense of the word.
The situation is complicated, I see that. Please understand that I am not angry at you. I simply can’t be unreservedly happy for you - at least, not yet. I don’t know Snape … you, it seems, do - however I might feel about that - and I would be the first to say my judgement has erred many times. I only fear that people do not change, however much we wish them too. That, in fact, our wishing them otherwise might be what blinds us so terribly. But it is difficult to discuss this in a letter. How about I promise you a fair hearing when we met and we’ll leave it at that?
As for when that will be, will you be attending the British League Final this coming week? I am not certain I will be in attendance - but, should you not be too overwhelmed by revels the following day, I’m taking the children to Florean’s for an ice-cream (not quite carrot cake, but if you will accept the compromise, you are as kind and fair as Helga Hufflepuff herself). Molly has decided they are still too young to attend the game (Bill and Charlie have expressed their great disappointment by leading the gnomes into the house and setting them free, you can imagine how my sister reacted to this display of anarchy).
I’m hoping time with Uncle Fabian will cheer them up, but I may only be flattering myself. Time with Aunt Athena, however, is sure to succeed at the job.
Join us, won’t you?
I promise I will listen - but I also promise to have my say. Don’t hold it against me, I may only be a cousin of little importance but ever since your first year at Hogwarts I have considered you family, not by blood, but by love.
My deepest regards for you, dear,
F.P.
P.S. Charlie is sitting by my side, completing his Kwikspell Primer. He has instructed me to pass on his humble request for you to bring your biggest and most ferocious creature, preferably one with sharp claws and fangs. I pointed out that this might well alarm the other patrons of Fortescue’s, not being as valiant-hearted as the Weasley clan, but he counter claims that you have a way with all beings and can subdue even the mightiest beast. Failing that, Charlie believes he would be quite able to step in himself. However, he has kindly conceded that a creature we can cuddle might be a pleasantly acceptable substitute.
Fabian,
That’s the thing. I do not believe it is complicated. I love him, and he loves me. He is choosing me above all other things. He is kind to me, and gentle. Everything I could ever want from a partner in life. There are difficulties of course, friends he has made....but there is no complication in my choice. I choose him, no matter what difficulties might arise. A fair hearing is all I can ask for. I won’t be able to say everything, but I hope I can give you some clarity into our relationship.
I also hope you will respect that, at the end of the day, this is my choice.
I know you suffered with Bellatrix. I did not know you well by that point, but saw the pair of you around at Hogwarts. This is different, I can sense it. Severus truly loves me.
I will be attending the League Final with Severus. We managed to snag some last minute tickets, and I’ve made a bet with my papa. He thinks that Kenmare will win, but I’m certain Puddlemere will pull through. I shall be gracious and fair as is the Hufflepuff way and accept your compromise, though if you do happen to purchase me a carrot cake at some point I would be indescribably happy. I hope Molly managed to be rid of the gnomes without too much damage! I shall write to her with some degnoming ideas she may not know. Perhaps I could go to the Burrow one day I am off and help out.
I am sure time with Uncle Fabian will cheer them up, especially when there is also the promise of ice cream involved but I certainly shall join you. I shall ensure I do not drink too much at the party so that I can be fully present. I could never pass up the opportunity to spend time with the kiddos.
You are not a cousin of little importance, Fabian Prewett. I look up to you in all matters and will respect what you have to say, even if I disagree. You (and Gideon and Molly of course) are incredibly important to me.
All my love,
A.
P.S: Tell Charlie I shall bring my biggest and most ferocious creature that can fit in my bag. This is likely to be a cuddly creature as my bag is not very big. I’m sure my Puffskein would not object to being roughly manhandled by the Weasley clan, so perhaps that may be the best option. I shall take Charlie to see ferocious beasts one day soon with Molly’s permission.

Daisy couldn’t help the smile that spread across her face as Athena began pondering the future once again. It was so nice to have her best friend be as excited about the future as she was. “I’ll make sure my family supports the opposing team so our families can have a rivalry and an excuse to go to games together.” She giggled, sending a quick nod towards Athena, “I think the World Cup will be the last Wizarding event I attend before giving up magic for a year, so it better be a night to remember.”
She returned the hug with a small “Thanks,” while she scanned the crowd once again, her eyes falling on a head of messy curls a few feet away. Daisy pulled away from Athena with a smile, “I just saw Tilden, over there!” She pointed, “I’m gonna go catch up with him. Thanks for sitting with me!” Daisy gave her friend a quick peck on the cheek before rushing off, “We’re still on for lunch later this week? I’ll see you then, Athena!”

@unspeakableprcwett
Dearest cousin,
Once again I find myself apologising for not finding time to come and see you. There has been a huge change in my life recently, and we must find time soon to meet over coffee and a large slice of cake to talk properly even though I shall mention it here. You mentioned that your life has become complicated and of course I wish to hear all about it - you know you can always come to me for some unbiased advice, and of course unconditional love, I hope.
I have been pouring over your words in the last letter we shared. I think you must be correct in that the centaurs are not human and have other ways and understandings, and thus we are wrong. I do not believe they were lying, my research into magical creatures tells me centaurs do not lie, but there are other explanations.
I wished to wait until we saw each other in person, but I do not know when that might be. Please do not be too angry with me, cousin. It would break my heart if you would turn away from me because of what my heart wants.
Severus and I are moving forward
Severus and I are no longer friends for we are
Severus and I are together dating. You may have heard whisper of us attending a ball together in Ottery St Catchpole, I didn’t spot Molly there but she may have been. That is why I write to you now, I don’t want you to be left in the dark. That was our first real date. Fabian he....is not who you feared. Not any more. He means ever such a great deal to me, cousin. He chose me, he will always choose me. I know it in my heart.
And I choose him. I love him.
This is far easier to write than it would be to tell you in person. I hope you won’t be too terribly upset, and instead respect that this is what I want for my life.
Please let me know when would be a good time for us to meet. Hopefully soon. You do owe me a favour, and I want to cash in by claiming a slice of carrot cake bigger than my head.
Love,
A

With a shake of her head, Daisy returned her attention back to Athena. There was nothing to worry about, and she knew that. She attempted to keep a smile on her face, trying her best to remain calm while she waited for Tilden, listening to her friend speak of such a fond memory, “Oh how fun! I loved it when my father would put me on his shoulders as a child. It always made me feel special.” Daisy let out a small giggle as she resisted the urge to look back to the crowd. Nodding, she sighed a happy sigh, “I am really glad we had a chance to come, it’s a wonderful memory Tilden and I will be able to look back on. And the World Cup will be a wonderful memory the four of us can loo back on.”
“I think that’s the plan. Just a celebratory drink then heading home, Tilden likely has to be at the shop in the morning so we aren’t planning on being out for much longer.” She couldn’t stand not looking for any longer as her eyes wandered back through the crowd, “I’m sorry, Athena, I know I’m being rude. I just can’t help but to worry.”
“It’s brilliant isn’t it? Especially at a quidditch match....it makes you feel so much taller, so much closer to the action. I can’t wait to bring my own children to quidditch matches! We’ll go to the world cup every year its on, and have the best time. I’ll have to pick a team to support properly, of course, before that happens. And then I can take them to local games too,” Athena smiled. She couldn’t wait to start her own family, especially seeing the love that her cousin Molly had for each and every one of her children. “Of course! We’ll definitely have to sort out something for the world cup, it’ll be brilliant,” so many exciting events were coming up this year that Athena was so excited for. How brilliant that she could share such things with her best friend...and the man she had fallen head over heels for so quickly.
A man willing to leave behind everything he had been working towards - for her.
“I’m working in the morning too, so I don’t plan on being too late....but a few more drinks can’t hurt,” Athena raised her glass with a cheeky smile. “Don’t worry about it,” she reached out to squeeze her friend’s hand, before dropping her hand to give Daisy a tight hug. “I know its easy to worry but we have to trust that things will be okay....otherwise we’ll spend our whole lives wrapped up in worry.”

Athena’s words definitely helped put Daisy at ease, but she still couldn’t help but to worry. The love of her life pushing his way through a crowded bar to get drinks for them, unsure who or what may be lurking in there. She turned her full attention back to her friend, knowing how rude she was being by not giving Athena her full attention. She smiled, listening to Athena’s memories of Quidditch, “That sounds lovely, I wish I had been able to see a match before this one, but I just never had a chance. Honestly, I’m surprised I even came tonight, James had mentioned that this match was one I wouldn’t want to miss, and I mentioned to Tilden that it might be fun and he surprised me with tickets. Going to the World Cup together would be great! And great bonding time for Tilden and Severus as well.”
Daisy nodded, her eyes scanning the crowd again. Everyone seemed to be on top of each other, bumping elbows, cheers-ing their drinks, hugging and hollering. It really wasn’t something her or Tilden was used to and she was mostly just worried that he may have accidentally gotten trampled or something. She turned back to Athena, attempting to push any negative thoughts out of her mind, genuinely glad that her friend was having such a good time, “Honestly I had a wonderful time at the game, but this isn’t really my scene and I don’t have enough alcohol in me yet to be having fun. But I’m so happy you’re having fun! It’s infectious.”
Athena could see Daisy was a little distracted and just offered a small smile. Commenting on it probably wouldn’t make her feel any better, but at least Athena was present. Hopefully her being with Daisy, at least until Tilden got back might set her mind at ease and then she could go and find Severus again. Best find him before the wine got to her head too much. “Oh it was wonderful. Papa used to lift me onto his shoulders and when a team scored we’d jump up and down,” she smiled fondly. Perhaps she should ask her dad if he wanted to go to a game soon, she mused. “I bet you’re glad you did come! It really wasn’t one to miss. When tickets go on sale for the World Cup we should look at getting them...we can sort portkeys and whatnot reasonably easily.”
“Maybe once you’ve had a few drinks it might be best if you head off. Things will only get more rowdy once the crowd is more drunk...that’s normally the way things go isn’t it? It’s nice honestly....to get out and have fun! It seems like everyone is here.”
