I shared a really beautiful post about high femmes recently about how high femme has become a lot more about fashion and style, that high femme really means very feminine. There’s a lot of ambiguity around the label and I hope you know when I’m using it that for me especially it means a stone bottom and submissive as well as a very feminine femme. These don’t have to coexist for you - it can mean one or the other but my point is although it CAN mean a very feminine femme, just because you don’t hold yourself to that standard doesn’t make you any less in the label.
You can hold the label confidently and still do “non-feminine” things, I love makeup but I don’t wear it everyday. Why? Because it’s important to let your skin have a break - for me especially my eyes are very sensitive and the on and off of mascara makes them red and itchy. Not wearing makeup one day doesn’t mean I’m not a high femme for that day, sometimes the most feminine and nurturing thing you can do is take care of yourself. I fucking hate sneakers because I think I’d be much more comfortable in a pair of heels or if I REALLY had to I could do a nice pair of flats with a bow BUT when I exercise my body I know that sneakers are the best choice and although it’s not my top choice taking care of myself is the most important thing I can do.
Being a high femme is not something you take on and off. I’ll confidently call myself a high femme with greasy hair, stained hello kitty pajamas and a bad attitude because labels are simply something you use to describe yourself, not a strict set of rules for your behaviour and interaction with the world.
I love being a high femme and it’s so confusing when I see people excluding themselves from that label, almost a fear of not being enough, pretty enough, feminine enough etc. I can promise you your local high femme (wherever they are) is not constantly sitting around in a full beat. They are not always wearing stilettos high enough to break a neck.
There is a time where the lipstick smudges, the curls fall, the stockings rip, and the heels come off and when that time comes you are STILL a high femme.
