Common Poorwills are the only species of bird known to hibernate for extended periods of time, usually weeks or months. Instead of migrating south for the winter like most nightjars, they hibernate in rocks and reduce their body temperature to 5C/41F. This was rediscovered in the 1940s, but was originally known by Native Americans, since the Hopi name for them is “hölchko” or “the sleeping one”.
