It’s been a long time since you’ve stepped foot in this nation, but the chill that settles in your bones from the falling snow is familiar and reminds you of days from long ago. 

Your old house looms before you. It isn’t as worn down as you thought it would be for being left empty for so long. The windows could use a good scrubbing, but all of the wooden floorboards of your porch are intact. Strangely enough, one of the boards on the steps leading up to your house is a shade lighter than the other ones. Maybe you’ve been lucky for once in your life, and the archons have kept away the worst effects of the harsh weather.

It just feels strange.

As you stand there, a heavy bag of belongings clutched in your hand, there’s a shift in the air. Not from the rustling of trees, nor the snow in the wind, but a change in the atmosphere that makes you turn around. And then–

A whisper of your name. 

You lose your grasp on your bag. It lands in the snow with a thump. 

“Ajax?” Your voice is equally soft, but the wind carries the name through the air to the man that stands before you. A man that is familiar yet different all at once. You can see traces of the boy he once was in the color of his hair (more ginger than the old bright red) and in the frame of his body (more muscular and scarred, yet tall and somewhat lanky nonetheless). 

His eyes though; they’ve changed the most. No longer as wide or as bright, they’re now a more muted blue with a hard edge to them, even through the wonder in his gaze as he looks you from head to toe. Life hasn’t been easy on him, and he’s had to adapt and become stronger so life didn’t devour him. 

You suspect he can read the same thing on your body as well.

Your heart aches.

Oh, how you’ve missed him.

He takes a small step forward, hesitant. Then a larger one, lengthening his stride as you too start to move toward him, picking up your feet through the thick snow until the two of you are nearly bounding toward each other, closing the distance until you slam into his chest and his arms wrap tightly around you—one at your shoulders, the other at your lower back, squeezing you to him as if he’s found a treasure he once thought he lost.

As you tuck your face into the side of his neck, and he breathes your name in heart wrenching relief into your ear, a feeling of rightness settles over you.

It feels like you’re finally home.
