Autism Acceptance
5 posts
I’ve been struggling with making friends and social expectations lately. Even though I know I’m Autistic, I’ve been having a hard time with truly accepting it. It may be internalized ableism or maybe it’s the people I’m surrounded with. I’m making this blog to try and help myself (and others) accept their Autism. The word Autism/Autistic will be capitalized as I really liked the idea of it showing that Autism is a part of my identity (idea from the book “Unmasking Autism,” by Devon Price.)

I just rewatched Wreck-it-Ralph and fell in love with Vanellope all over again. I’ve always found her so relatable. She’s one of the characters I wholeheartedly headcannon as Autistic because of how much of myself I see in her💜

This series is just some fun facts about my special interests (or just random stuff lol)
Fun Fact #1
The first spider described as a “tarantula” was not a tarantula at all. It was a wolf spider. And before we knew better, “tarantula” also described other large, unknown species of spider. All tarantulas are spiders in the family of Theraphosidae.

This is going to be a series of things I’ve learned and remind myself of every day since Iearned that I’m Autistic.
Lesson #1
It’s better to be alone than around those who put you down.
I know it’s so hard to believe for some of us, but it’s true. If your friends left you when you told them you’re Autistic or said that you’re “too much,” they’re not your friends. If you feel scared to see them- they’re not your friends. If they “tease” you in a way that makes you feel like shit- they’re not your friends. If you feel worse after seeing them—they. are. not. your. friends.
Here’s an example:
You- *talking about special interest or literally anything you’re interested in*
Them- who asked?
Them- shut up/stop talking
Them- no one cares
Them- you should go and talk to that instead *pointing at some inanimate object*
Them- is this the ONLY thing you talk about?
Now, some of those can be fine if you mutually know that it’s a joke— but if you don’t know and it makes you feel bad (and you’ve expressed it to them), and they won’t stop, they’re not your friends. Staying around them will not do you any good.
(This is not one (1) fits all information. It is my experience.)
