Rationale
This poster visually explores the concept of ‘kotahitanga’ and by referencing the Auckland Art Gallery’s vision of “being united in seeing, feeling, and experiencing the world through art” (Auckland Art Gallery Toi o Tāmaki, n.d., para. 4). The red, black and white colour palette symbolizes Māori influence. The red tone is sourced from the Māori flag, representing strength and connection. The text sits within a visible grid system, with woven like lines running through the red letterforms to visually reinforce unity and interconnectedness. This relates to the traditional concept of weaving in Māori culture, where individual strands come together to form a stronger whole. The text Toi O Tamaki honours the Maori heritage of the gallery and the text ‘We unite to create more’ was taken directly from the gallery values. Through these visual elements, this poster aims to portray the gallery as a site where cultures and ideas come together to create, inviting the viewers to reflect on the benefits of unity. Process Annotation 2.7
Throughout my design process in the last 6 weeks, I took a turn from what I had previously been doing. After receiving feedback, I had to reevaluate key aspects from my design like my word choice. I began searching for a word that better communicated the story that I wanted to tell. I experimented in InDesign to test visual hierarchy and layout combinations. Trialling and testing really helped as it gave me the chance to experiment with a range of ideas and narrow it down to my favourites.
I got stuck having lines as well as dots in my design. The dots felt too minimal, but the lines felt distracting. So I created variations, ranging from minimalist to maximalist, with a mix of both. In the end, I realised the lines communicated the idea of unity I was aiming for. When I was stuck, I asked for peer feedback. Their fresh eyes could pinpoint problems more clearly.
Ive learned that experimentation is key. I often get fixated on a certain choice and struggle beyond it, which limits my chance to refine and improve. A major breakthrough was letting go of the original typeface—it no longer served the purpose I needed it to. Moving forward, I want to improve my ability to broaden my scope. This is what transforms a good designer into a great one.

FINAL VIDEO!!
I am happy with how this has turned out. it really tested my patience and skill on after effects as i havent done anything like this before but im proud of myself for how it has come together.
it tells the story that I want it to tell and it looks good doing it.

after some feedback from caroline, this animation was the best at symbolizing my word 'kotahitanga' meaning 'unity'. i feel like i could slow down the animation a bit to give it some breathing room and also alter the black lines coming in. right now it has 3 clear phases,
background lines coming in
text coming in
black lines and bottom text coming in
I want to mesh these together more so they dont feel as disjointed. aakifa suggested the background lines fading out to leave just the text which i really liked the idea of as it symbolised my text, 'we unite to create more', as the lines unite to create the message of the text.

POSTER FINAL!!!!
thank god its done. i had to tweak the bottom right text a bit to get all the letters lined up perfectly as well as adjust the sizing but im sooo happy with how it turned out. im proud of myself for going out of my comfort zone and creating something that ive never created before. thank you to caroline and aakifa for being patient through my 29445847 variations and helping me weed out which is the best one.

another version with a varient background. i think i like the background appearing in 2 or more stages as all of the lines appearing is too fast.

Here are my 'final' designs before animating. Caroline gave some good feedback on what I can do in the future for other projects. I feel like I was holding on a lot to my original design and didnt stray far from it which worked well enough for this project, but i need to step out of my comfort zone next time.

I feel like I have done enough development and refining to properly communicate my process. I will add in my process annotation my thoughts and feelings on letting go of ideas and going wild.

experimenting with adding patterns to my design to liven things up a little and make them less plain. i dont love the grey background pattern as much since it takes away from the 'square' composition that im aiming for but i could maybe try a few things to make it work if my lecturers feel like there needs to be something more to my design. right. now im just using a design off the internet for inside the letters and it looks a little messy right now, but if i decide to go forward with it ill clean it up and draw my own pattern.

i have 4 options for what red I want to use. even though I tried other colours, red was the one that stuck out to me the most because it has ties to the art gallery and maori culture. I like the top left the post as the red I was originally using looks too washed out. it is the red used on the maori flag which is a good thing to be able to link my work back to.
TUMBLR TOTALLY KILLS THE COLOUR BTW IT LOOKS SO DIFFERENT ON INDESIGN. ill have to do some print tests as well now i suppose 😞

Ive narrowed my fonts down to my two favourite ones. the N on the 'chicago' font looks out of place so im leaning towards 'pressio' but I am weirdly attatched to 'chicago'. I have been using it since the beginning and the edginess of it is unique and eye catching. I will also be getting feedback on this since i cant decide for myself :p

2.6 Design Annotation

Motion Graphics Annotation
Karel Marten is a Dutch designer and co-founder of the family-run studio Martens and Martens. His exhibition “Karel Martens: Re-Production” for ‘IS A GALLERY’ in Shanghai featured a range of installations exploring time, form, and abstraction. His piece “Clock”, a multi-channel video installation is a short animation featuring colourful, experimental typography focused on numbers. An abstract take on classic segmented displays, this design draws inspiration from celestial bodies and traditional timekeeping systems. The design is fast, systematic and geometric and challenges traditional norms of functionality and aesthetics through the use of colour, form and motion. This work inspires my own designs as the simplicity of shapes can tell a story and the use of colour theory can aid a design in many ways.

2.5 Design Annotation
Animated Poster Annotation
instagram
In this series of animated posters by Cecelia Elrich, a graphic and motion designer based in Madrid, white text appears on simple coloured backgrounds with muted tones. Captioned “Like Swimming”, the animation features lines of text rising and falling, changing opacity to create the effect of ‘swimming’. This mimics the fluid motion of water and establishes a strong visual hierarchy, as each letter becomes clearly visible in quick succession, guiding the viewer's eye down the page. The series effectively communicates its concept by pairing smooth text animation with phrases like ‘Swimming in Colour’. This is relevant to my own work, as I aim for my text to move in a smooth, unified way that reflects the meaning of my chosen word, ‘Kotahitanga’.
