Note
I read that 99% of DID cases are linked to childhood trauma. But what about the other 1%? Is it just a really rare "oopsies" in development that isn't linked to trauma or are there other theories?
Where did you read that?
All cases of DID are the result of childhood trauma. The problem with some sources is that they artificially limit what is counted as childhood trauma. For example, some studies only acknowledge physical and sexual abuse and neglect as potential traumas. Even studies that acknowledge verbal and religious abuse may fail to acknowledge bullying, medical trauma, or war.According to the APA, 90% of cases of DID are the result of abuse or neglect, leaving things like war, terrorism, medical trauma, and human trafficking to account for the other 10%. It should be remembered as well that some newly diagnosed individuals may not yet be aware of the trauma that their alters experienced.Studies that fail to account for one or more of these factors may give a skewed understanding of what causes DID.
DID is a posttraumatic disorder. If an individual claims to have DID but did not experience childhood trauma, they’re mistaken about their diagnosis. Iatrogenic, sociocognitive, or imitative presentations of DID (DID-like presentations caused by professional influences, social and media influences, and confusing the origin of other disorders’ symptoms respectively) are not the same as genuine DID.
I hope that this helps,
-Katherine of Those Interrupted
