I’ve been thinking and it seems like the whole “lance hides his insecurities with jokes and false confidence” shtick is completely fanon made. Like nowhere in canon has lance pushed others away from finding out his ~true feelings~ nor has he joked to cover them up. Hes always expressed his emotions, positive or negative, to his teammates and sought comfort from them. In s1 he may have left that party on Arus for some alone time but it was a party like he was practically in the center of it. Lance may not hide his feelings but he doesnt belch them out there either bc i mean who wouldnt be uncomfortable having a whole bunch of people listening to their sorrows? He vents to anyone willing to listen as long as theyre in an intimate or one on one setting. That’s why when Coran followed him he didn’t hesitate to tell him what was bothering him. I mean he literally talked about his problems to a yupper, a strange alien he had met not 5 minutes beforehand. And when blue didnt accept him he told allura about how he probably didnt have any place on the team at all. Im not saying all this so people stop projecting onto lance bc its whatever honestly but canonly lance has never tried to hide his feelings away. Hes an open person through and through. He lets people in and in turn people let him in (read: Keith in s3) and i think his openness is smthg to be admired and not forgotten and idk to me its just another reason to love lance mcclain
