You stare up at The Compound Bar and hitch your bag higher on your shoulder. This was it, your new start.

You push the door open nervously and look for the familiar face of the man who you’d met the other day.

The bar is quiet in the early afternoon, not exactly open to patrons yet, but not strictly closed either. Its dim lighting gives it the feel of nighttime despite the afternoon sun outside and even though the place is obviously old, a little dingy and ragged, it has a certain charm to it.

Still, it’s not a place you’d ever dream about coming to unless you were desperate.

Which you were.

“Uhm, Hello?” You call out, standing at the dark wooden bar, trying to peek over to the back room, but you jump, frightened shitless when the person you’re looking for jumps up from behind the counter in front of you.

“Hello? Oh, it’s you.” You smile nervously at Clint Barton, who now leans on the bar casually, putting down a pair of pliers.

“Just fixing the stereo system. Shit’s been broken for too long. You settling in town alright?” The question throws you off, and you nod, adjusting your purse again.

“Y-yeah, just fine.”

It’s Tuesday, nothing unusual about the afternoon as he sits in the driver’s seat of his truck. He’s parked in the car rider line waiting for your son to finish his day at Kindergarten, the sound of the bigger kids playing outside drowning out the softly playing radio. That, however, was the very thing that struck him, made his head spin and his heart squeeze.

This was familiar.

It was his.

Almost.

He lets his head loll to the right, watching you read something on your phone, oblivious to the way he’s staring at you like you’ve hung the moon. The breeze blows in through the rolled down window, finally cooled by the kiss of fall. A frown, then a chuckle as you scroll, still oblivious to him as you tuck your hair behind your ear.

“Baby?”

“Hmm?” You keep scrolling, something catching your attention as you click a link.

“You happy?”

“I mean I could use a cheeseburger, but yeah.” 

He just wants you to look at him, he needs to see you. 

You jump when he starts kissing at your jaw, swatting him away as you shift towards him in your seat.

Catch up with chapter 7

No one knew about the kiss in the bathroom and you wanted to keep it that way. Number one, you didn’t want Wanda know you broke the promise to keep things professional with Steve. If it ever got out, you’re making Steve take most of the blame on that one. You avoided him in class, didn’t text or call him, and he pulled you into the bathroom. You in no way regret that last one, but nope, this was definitely Steve Rogers’ fault.

Steve had to try to hide a snicker on Tuesday. You wore your long black peacoat, paired with a white fluffy scarf tied around your neck. You made sure to walk into the room right before he did. He told you to dress like a nun and that was the best you could do. The two of you avoided each other as you normally did, but you were happy to grab a laugh from him. Hopefully he punished you for it later.

You finished your history paper on Friday and sent it in through the class website that night. Final exams for both courses were scheduled for the following Monday rather than during your normal class time on Tuesday. You took Monday off work figuring you wouldn’t be done before two that afternoon. Jules had offered to take you out for dinner either in celebration or to cheer you up, depending on how you felt both exams went. Grades wouldn’t be posted until Thursday night with graduation the following Sunday.

Summary: Bucky returns to his childhood home only to discover its inheritor struggling to return it to its former glory. Luckily for you, Bucky’s memory isn’t that bad.

The warm summer breeze blows through his dark hair, making his neck prickle as the strands dance across it. Bucky Barnes adjusts the cap on his head and squints at the row of houses. Nothing had changed, and yet, everything had changed.

Antennas and little radar dishes sit on the roofs of many of the homes, a stark difference from the Minimal Traditional style homes, most of them built more than a hundred years ago now.

Bucky takes a deep breath and crosses the street.

The home he’s looking for, the one most familiar to him, sits slightly toward the left-hand side of the street, and as far as he can see, is the least renovated or touched out of any of them. He climbs the four steps quickly and knocks three times before he has the chance to change his mind.

Thanks to his enhanced hearing, he knows someone is home. He can hear movement on the other side and as it comes nearer, his nerves draw closer to the surface until the sound of a lock clicks and the doors is opened.

For some reason, he isn’t expecting to see someone like you on the other side.

Young, beautiful… young.

He isn’t sure who he expected to find, but it wasn’t you.

Summary: Some extra scenes about Steve, Ben and Reader, and how Steve came to fall so in love with his little family.

Warnings: None? a little bit of angst over absentee father.

Steve decides within a single month of you introducing him to Ben, that he’s going to be the best damn father figure that boy will ever have. He’s fairly certain by that point that he’s in love with you, and if he could have it his way he’d have asked you to marry him already, but even he knows that’s the ‘honeymoon phase’ talking and he should probably wait more than four months in total

 Still, he knows things can happen sometimes in relationships, and he vows that no matter what happens between you and him, he’d pop back in from time to time (if you allowed it) to see Ben.

Luckily, he doesn’t have to worry about that for now though.

��Steve!” The four-year-old screeches from the top of the hallway as Steve lets himself into your apartment, grinning widely and crouching down to grab the missile of a child as he launches himself in Steve’s arms. He’d never get tired of this. Ben’s arms are tight around his neck and Steve stands, shifting the boy to one hip.

Ben, he realises, is wrapped only in a towel, his hair wet and dripping. As Steve looks up again he can see Jenny, a teenager who lived on your block who you’d enlisted to watch Ben for an hour until Steve could get out to your place, standing in the hall looking exasperated.
