Carrie for the win. As usual.
Dear Babysnooks, Writing a poem about rape culture and the way I have been street harassed does not make me “really vain.” Rape is not something I wish for. Street harassment has nothing to do with appearance. It has everything to do with power and taking it away from women.

Life Day Anniversary
Exactly 10 years ago at this time I was sitting on the 3rd floor men’s bathroom in Whitten Hall at Illinois State University, watching as one of my closest friends was being loaded onto a stretcher after a suicide attempt. The next few days and months are a blur of fear and confusion as he recovered physically from the attempt, and began the long process of healing mentally. To be honest, I often wasn’t sure if he would make it. I also wasn’t sure if I had done the right thing by contributing to keeping him alive. I don’t believe suicide is a sign of weakness, I think it’s what people do when they truly believe there is no light at the end of a tunnel.
Fortunately, I’m able to sit here 10 years later and rejoice that my friend is alive and well. A number of things contributed to him staying alive and getting better, and I’m so happy I’m able to call him a friend. He’s always been there for me, in a number of ways, and I look forward to many more years of friendship.

I wonder if killing yourself is the only thing you can control in your entire life, and that’s why it’s a sin. Because you’re beating God at his own game.

Here’s the last poem Katie Wirsing told at MBLGTACC 2014. I told her after the show that this poem perfectly described my life for the last year or so. It’s called “Hope Chest”

I am not the first person you loved. You are not the first person I looked at with a mouthful of forevers. We have both known loss like the sharp edges of a knife. We have both lived with lips more scar tissue than skin. Our love came unannounced in the middle of the night. Our love came when we’d given up on asking love to come. I think that has to be part of its miracle. This is how we heal. I will kiss you like forgiveness. You will hold me like I’m hope. Our arms will bandage and we will press promises between us like flowers in a book. I will write sonnets to the salt of sweat on your skin. I will write novels to the scar of your nose. I will write a dictionary of all the words I have used trying to describe the way it feels to have finally, finally found you. And I will not be afraid of your scars. I know sometimes it’s still hard to let me see you in all your cracked perfection, but please know: whether it’s the days you burn more brilliant than the sun or the nights you collapse into my lap your body broken into a thousand questions, you are the most beautiful thing I’ve ever seen. I will love you when you are a still day. I will love you when you are a hurricane.
