reminder that percy's rebellious nature. often linked to the lack of restraint he inherits from his father. could also derive from the abusive and toxic environments he grew up in. and him undermining the authoritative rule of the adults in his life was likely a defense mechanism. because it was the only thing he could control when every aspects of his life felt like someone was plotting his downfall. so.

percy doing better than annabeth in college is one my favorite developments in the rrverse. if we reflect on percy and annabeth's academic upbringing. annabeth living at camp allowed her to receive accommodations for her adhd and dyslexia and surround herself with like-minded campers who had the same limitations. whereas percy was ridiculed, belittled, and routinely humiliated because of his adhd and dyslexia. even more so, percy's friends and family leave him out of the loop on so many important issue (no chb orientation film, no information about the great prophecy) which perpetuates his subpar confidence and self-esteem in his skills as a student and a demigod. but going to college at NRU changes his mindset because he receives the accommodations he should have gotten years ago and fucking thrives to the point of getting higher grades than annabeth — a person he deems way smarter and more prepared than him in every way. the most important thing percy is learning now is that a supportive environment makes all the difference, and he is more capable than he initially thought.

I love early seasons supernatural aesthetics so much. The isolated highways, funky motel rooms, neon signs, shiny guns and shiny cars, leather jackets, old books, through a film camera lens in seasons one and two, makes for such a specific atmosphere. It transfers the isolation Sam and Dean experience so well, cramped into the seats of a 67’ Chevy impala, claustrophobically un-alone while individually lonely. The nasty, sometimes created with horrible special effects, monsters really do look monstrous, unsettling more than outright terrifying. With yellow eyes, in dirty clothes, glitching and pale. The whole colour palette is grey-ish and cold, you almost feel the contrasted darkness, the distrust, the nagging belief that something wicked may be hiding behind every corner, behind every corner of your own self as well. Idk. The blood looks dark, the sulfur looks sickeningly yellow, the skin looks unnaturally pale. It’s all so horror-coded, and gives such an atmosphere of instability in your own existence in the world, which aligns with the themes of the seasons. This atmosphere, to me, makes it a better horror show than if it had had better special effects and scarier monsters. Because the horrifying is in the daily existence, in how you are, rather than what you face.

The three smiles of Percy Jackson.

The first is the most common you see - The sarcastic, crooked, trouble maker smile. It’s lopsided and smirkish in all the wrong and right ways. His left eyebrow arches, his hair windswept and disheveled, and you suspect that this kid would set something on fire just because he can. It’s haughty and infuriating but exhilarating and roguish. It’s the thrill of sneaking out in the middle of night with hushed murmurs and bad intentions. It’s the smugness of doing something delightfully wrong and knowing you’re going to get away with it. It’s the smile you know you can’t trust but can’t resist.

The second is the less common, the genuine, and the still slightly crooked smile. It’s soft and it’s gentle, but it glows with a burning intensity. It’s the happiness of a lazy ocean and the comfort of a mother’s touch. It’s contentment in its purest form and warms you to the very core.

But the last is different, discerning, and happens far too often for anyone’s comfort. It’s crooked, the way all his smiles are, but far too wide and far too feral. It’s something that’s often tagged along with a hard, broken glint in his eyes and a harsh bark of laughter. It’s sadistic and it’s dark. It’s the raw power of a hurricane. It’s the cruelty of a predator toying with its prey. And it always happens while he’s killing a monster.
