More than multicultural faces, intuitive articles and photography- BACKAYARD Magazine is a social network. The title, a throwback to a Jamaican patois term meaning ‘one’s roots’ or where one comes from, reflects that BACKAYARD is the only diverse Jamaican reggae print publication.

This is a bit unusual as normally we post these at thebeginning of the process however this time we decided to try these right at the very end. This time a bit more of the focus is on our distribution networks as we aim to take our content around the world. Physically! So plenty thanks goes out to: @barrakashwood - Toronto, @iameyeandi - London (who also shot and wrote the cover feature), @JulianaHawawiniphoto - San Francisco (she shot the Cali Roots concert) and Backayard super fans Uli and Anita from Burgebrach in Germany who all helped to put BAY further on the map.
#BAY30 has concert images from @gadstone_, @JulianaHawawiniphoto, and @demarioooooooo. We have @blvkh3ro on the cover where @iameyeandi looks deep into what keeps this man on his particular mission, we also look into acts: @jamilafalak shot by @tuckerjayson18, @laalee_ranks shot by @gladstone_.
We also have features dedicated to Beat Street (Orange Street) @islandgoseek with a look into the career thus far of one @s.adjani as an auteur of his very own series Dreaming Whilst Black which was shot by @jikreuben. The words
and lens of @gadstone_ is represented heavily in the G.A.N.J.A and Climate Clock sections of this issue as well.
@MusicPhill handles the charts and @by_yoel, as is his standard, delivered with his layouts and colour grading so it should be an immersive experience for all who get their hands on one.
All and all it was a great experience putting this all together and we give thanks for the support Blessings always. @backayardlive

It has been a great time from March 2022 till now, at the time of writing. Just seeing people being on the road, being social and especially patronizing the late night events put on by the entertainment industry that helps to make Jamaica the entertainment mecca it is purported to be the world over. Live musical performances provide avenues where people, and in some cases whole communities, could generate income on the day of the event. International music festivals featuring reggae music and dancehall, attracts thousands of visitors from all over the world and people from all over Jamaica.
And thus we have quite a few concert and event images in #BAY29 from @breddawarren, @hinds_, and @houseofcaoss. We have @iamtanyastephens on the cover where we enquire about her feelings about her career and what level of madness it takes to put out her brand of music, we also look into fresh acts: @malie_music and @imeru_tafari and how they are navigating their space in the industry.
We also have features dedicated to the exploration of the land that we love through @beingjamaican and @islandgoseek with a significant contribution from the pen and lens of @gadstone_.
Also our friends at @islandmusicclub has some cool inserts in this publication so Enjoy!! Our team who brought it all together are: @tuckerjayson18, @musicphill, @reggaeology, @alymartine and @scottbraq - who provided us with our cover image. Ginigog did his thing with the layouts and colour grading so it should be an immersive experience for all who gets their hands on one.
All and all it was a great experience putting this all together and we give thanks for the support Blessings always.

Hundreds of jubilant revellers made their merry way to Brockwell Park on a sunny, warm Sunday afternoon, for the sophomore iteration of City Splash, part of Brockwell Live – a collective of independent festivals taking place in the park until June.
With the stranglehold that Covid restrictions previously placed on music events worldwide, now mercifully released, young and young at heart, thronged in their numbers to celebrate the glorious revival of live music in the heart of South London – Brixton. Beautiful copy of: Selassie is the Chapel, featuring Bob on lead vocals / guitar, Rita, Bunny and Peter with flawless, heavenly harmonies and percussion. First pressing of this deeply, spiritual acoustic was on white label back in 1968 and as far as I know, just a handful of copies were made. My own personal copy is on the Wail n Soul label which was formed by the Wailers in 1966-ish and located at 18a Greenwich Park Road, Kingston 5, Jamaica. Production and hauntingly beautiful binghi drumming is by Mortimer ‘Kummi’ Planno, one of the key figures in the early Rasta movement and one of Marley’s first managers. Planno, a revered elder in the Nyabinghi Mansion (on 5th Street, Trenchtown) must also be credited as the first person to garner a record contract for the Wailers, after introducing them to American record producer Danny Sims at a Grounation ceremony at Planno’s yard in Trenchtown. The late Danny Sims (2012), wily businessman, controversial publisher and multiple label owner, signed the Wailers around 5 years before Island Records. That same year, they would sign their first non- exclusive long term contract with Cissi Music, one of JAD labels associated music publishing companies. Incidentally, JAD was co-owned by Johnny Nash (the ‘J’ in JAD) who is considered to be one of the first foreign musicians to record multiple reggae hits in Kingston, Jamaica. His rendering of: I Can See Clearly Now (1972) achieved the #1 spot on the US Billboard Hot 100 Chart, where it remained for four weeks and sold over 1 million copies. In Roger Steffens book: So Much Things To Say: The Oral History of Bob Marley, Sims is quoted as saying : “If it wasn’t for Johnny Nash, reggae would have never been a worldwide, international music.” That’s quite a bold opinion, so his statement is open to debate. At the end of the day, if it wasn’t for Jamaica - REGGAE would not exist! Something else that’s quite interesting is that the JAD contract was drawn up by the lawyer father of much loved Jamaican Radio Broadcaster, the late Neville Willoughby (2006). Arthur Jenkins and Danny Sims are the A & D of the acronym. Fast forward to 2011 and: Selassie is the Chapel (this time, sung by Stephen and featuring big bro Ziggy) resurfaces on Stephen Marley’s second studio album: Revelation Pt.1 - The Root of Life. The album went on to win the Grammy Award for Best Reggae Album in 2012 and like Nash, 40 years prior, shot to #1 on US Billboard’s Reggae Album’s Chart. The journey of this song, it’s origins and the complexity of the history interwoven by the threads that bring the fabric together are simply fascinating. Part folklore, part fact. But isn’t that what history really is after all? A perspective, a memory, a curated memory? We choose the viewpoint that suits us comfortably, one that fits right. Yet, regardless of perspective, a fact that is indisputable is this: Reggae Music and the Wailers transformed the musical landscape in less than a decade after its documented birth. And this is why ‘Triumphantly we must all sing and sing and sing...”
