Off The Grid and Off The Rails
So I looked up that horrid homesteader guy whose Insta Ryan Guzman liked & followed.
I found an Express.co.uk article that completely elides any mention of his ALT-RT politics & belief system.
And I noticed that, in his videos, he’s careful about code words designed to appeal broadly without revealing there’s hate behind them.
I can’t speak for Ryan Guzman, but I do know that a shitload of fans voted or have family who voted for Trump or Brexit, etc. And a lot of ppl believe they did do out of ignorance, not malice.
If you don’t pay lots of attention to deconstructions of RW rhetoric, it’s easy to miss the way these ideas are seeded and sold by appealing to commonly held values like freedom, nature, back to basics, nostalgia, getting kids out doors, homesteading, sustenance farming, healthy & green living, homeopathy, naturopathy, etc etc.

Yeah, regarding your post...ppl love to say acab and then fully commit to retributive justice when it comes down to actually sitting in the discomfort of community work. The right is a funnel and takes people as they are while the left demands people make no mistakes and punish them if they do. Vitriol will only make him dig his heels in more and fall into the arms of the people who aren't telling him to khs. Why does anyone think that the right is growing in numbers? It's how this works. The only way out is through calm, caring, open-hearted discussions. I will say, though, it's only gonna really come when/if ppl in his life who know him put in the effort. So maybe won't happen ever.
But for everyone screaming at him and pointing fingers, I hope they approach things more carefully if they start witnessing their own loved ones falling into the same rabbit hole. Otherwise we will lose every single time.
I don't know why ppl think it's so obvious to avoid the pipeline. There's a reason it's been so successful and there's a reason the left keeps tearing itself apart.
Yeah, agreed. And while nobody owes him anything, I think if you care about these issues you educate him. Just like you educate people in your real life. It’s even easier online. Educating others is everyone’s responsibility who actually wants a change.
I understand some might actually be too hurt to do that, and that’s valid. But that’s a minority.

if anyone wants to do some reading to further their understanding of the alt-right pipeline and specifically how social media/online spaces are used to influence people, may i suggest:
-https://feminist.org/news/the-alt-right-pipeline-and-the-rise-of-trump-how-digital-radicalization-found-its-political-voice/ <- examines how podcasts like joe rogan’s can act as a gateway to extreme alt-right views, as well as offering solutions for how to stop/help people that are susceptible or already on the wrong path
-https://harvardpolitics.com/alt-right-pipeline <- anecdote from an author about how seemingly harmless YouTube content sucked him into the pipeline
-http://archive.today/3oHHW <- an article in The Atlantic examining the subculture of “crunch/crunchy” which ties into the current proliferation of purity culture in the US. points out how fringe talking points on both ends of the political spectrum are dangerous and how they operate similarly to draw in susceptible people

I think I big part of the fandom need to take a step back and reflect on how they have reacted to this Ryan Guzman controversy. Because this is not it.
Wise reactions are few and too far between. Most of it ranges from disgusting (hoping his s*icide attemp would have succeeded), to bullying (posting hate under his art, bullying other fans) to just completely useless (just announcing you don’t support him anymore and saying he is transphobic under his ig comments).
What exactly is it gonna achieve that fans post under his ig posts saying how disappointed they are or are calling him transphobic when they do not explain how he was being transphobic. Posting that reel does not mean he (or anyone else liking that video) is transphobic. It was clever propaganda, it’s not helpful to assume he understood the whole meaning (I’d argue many fans missed it as well, as the reaction was delayed). And even if he did, educating is still the only way to change things. But most importantly, a lot of people reading those comments don’t get the context, and just get confused. If you don’t want to educate him and others, then why are you posting? If you care about trans rights, then surely you must want to change things? Otherwise what you are just doing is pure performance, claiming moral superiority without any action to make things better. It means nothing. If that makes you feel better, then I guess that’s the validation for it, but it’s important to understand it’s still meaningless in the big picture. We should try to be better.
Just a disclaimer to end this, what he posted was wrong, no one needs to like him, support him, or watch 911. People can still like him, support him and watch 911.

genuinely so proud and thankful for the posts going around trying to make a change and be kind to the trans community. doing better is how we see real change.
also, thinking that uneducated people can and will spontaneously learn critical thinking skills, expecting them to educate themselves and reacting with violence when they don't is a deeply privileged way of thinking. because propaganda works. we are not immune to centuries of it.

Ryan has shown his racism five years ago during the BLM movements, shared blatant anti-vax ideology several times during COVID (presumably got vaxed to not lose his job), has followed and liked several alt-right Instagram accounts over the years, has been openly misogynistic on an alt-right TradWife podcast just last December (where he also decided to be a rape apologist), has happily admitted in an interview that he views every man in the world except his son as competition, and, just after the S8 finale aired, bragged about turning the 8x17 kitchen scene aggressive and physical without disclosing it to Oliver or the crew first. Also, the interview where he admits he’s a prima donna nd purposely ruins scenes by phoning it in if he isn't the center of attention.
Ryan has, in fact, shown his ass time and time and time again the last few years, and Buddie stans have made excuses, blamed his ex wife, his upbringing, all kinds of things that are no excuse at almost forty years old. He’s a horrible, terrible person, and if you defend and support him, or worse, blame Oliver or Aisha for his behavior, so are you.
Do you hear yourself? I wasn’t first even gonna answer, but here we go.
Lets start from the bottom. What you are saying is absolutely bs. Never has Oliver or Aisha been blamed for his behavior, what are you even on about? In fact, Aisha never gets called on similar things that Ryan get’s hate for.
He never bragged about turning the kitchen scene aggressive. First of all, it wasn’t aggressive, secondly, it was the director who said it needed more and even proposed more ’aggressive’ response than what Ryan went with. ’Phoning’ scenes was wrong, but it was an extremely human story about self-doubt and what it can bring out of people - he learned from it and changed his ways. That only tells good things about him and his ability to change. Also nothing wrong with viewing others as competition. I’m sure many competitive people do that. Also it’s just a common phrase he said.
You calling him a primadonna tells a lot about you and exposes you as a hater. People like you are the reason people defend him so much - because you hate on him all the time. Times when he actually deserves to be called out got lost in the noise and that’s not good.
Like now, yeah, he deserves to be called out on that like/share. But the reaction is ott. The video had other Ryan-coded stuff so I doubt he even realised the problematic parts, and he should realise and people should educate him, not hate on him.
You can’t keep bringing the racist comments back all the time. He messed up, was educated, said sorry and hasn’t repeated his mistakes.
He has never been a rape apologist, nor misogynist. Yeah, he clearly has some oldfashioned/conservative views (probably come from religion), but as long as he doesn’t push them on anyone else, that’s not even problematic. Anti-wax people don’t take the vax to keep their jobs, they die on that hill, like Rockmond did.

Do people forget that during covid all people working 911 needed to get vaccinated, those who where anti-vax and didn’t do it, were literally fired.

may I ask how you came up with your username?
It’s an old one. It was something Robert said to Aaron (Emmerdale) years ago I just related into and just been too lazy to change it. Nothing too deep behind it.
