Why I hate Kyosei but don't really blame Meiko
My problem isn't just how Kyosei revolves around Meiko, but mostly how the digidestined revolve towards her. They're just way too sweet to her! I'm not saying that she's a hatable character who only deserves hate, but she can't toughen up if everyone is trying to make her keep some kind of innocence. Yes, she's been through a lot but more in a passive than an active way. If it had been any other character, almost everyone would have been like "Get a grip and fight!". I know Meiko isn't as strong as them since she hasn't been through what they have, but even as kids they used to behave that way. Back then, everyone learned how to fight the hard way and Meiko has to take the same path. Which is also something I hate and don't really understand is how everyone is so much nicer to Meiko than to anyone else. Like, when Meiko is being afraid and whiny everyone thinks it's cute and sad, but when it's Mimi does it it's annoying and when Joe does it it's unberable! Joe has sure often been whiny and a coward, but he has always been there when he was really needed and has even sacrificed himself many times for his friends in 01. While Meiko, she just came by, put everyone in danger (I understand that she was afraid of saying that Meicoomon was the cause of the infection but she could have at least try to keep her away from the other digimons) and has spent more time apologizing and complaining than trying to fix her mistakes. Not to mention that I'm talking about Joe as a child and Meiko as a teenager! I've always had a problem (and when I say "always" I mean "since I was 5") with the other one's attitude towards Joe even if I could understand some reactions, but comparing it with Meiko's treatment just fills me with a crippling anger! I also don't get how the digidestined are always ready to sacrifice everything and everyone for someone they've known for less than a year, without second thoughts. Maybe I just don't have the same comradery spirit asthem, but if they were at least ready to do it with some fear and reluctance it could have make more sense. Some people have posted stuffs about Meiko's character development but I don't really see it. Sure, she got more brave in this movie but still not enough to make an actual difference. Maybe they're saving that for the last movie, in this case I would be proud of her. I actually don't hate Meiko's character, but how the writers used it. She would have been a much more interesting character if everyone would have treated her like an equal instead of some fragile thing they're afraid to break, or if everyone would have come to hate her and how it would have make her fight her way toward redemption or just anything else! Instead, she's just the archetype of the whiny useless girl that everyone likes for no reason and I just can't stand her, nor the other characters, thay way. What I've always (always still meaning since I was 5) liked about Digimon is how the main characters are so much more different than what the ones can see in other typical movies or shows, and the dynamics that all of those different personnalities create. But in Kyosei, they showed us something I have seen on and on on TV (or in the movies or on the internet) to the point of not standing it anymore. Seeing this is Digimon is utterly disappointing and a huge blow in my childhood! Although Digimon Adventure and Tri don't have the same writer (nor director nor producer btw) so Tri can still be seen as an animated fanfiction, which it is to me now. I just can't see it as canon anymore. I was ready to accept tragic things like the reboot, but I just can't forgive lazy writing.

Honestly why why try to label them it’s up in the air:

Although what comforted me in Kyosei is that even if Taichi started a romance with Meiko, when Meiko and Yamato got in danger together Taichi still only called Yamato’s name

Meiko story has been going too long. I don’t hate Meiko, at first. But then seeing this gone too far, I just couldn’t stand any longer. It’s kinda self insert fanfic instead of a famous anime we knew for years. Maybe Toei should rename this become The Meiko Show.
I’ve never really liked Meiko as a character, personally (I feel like she veers too dangerously close to the Mary Sue category), but this wouldn’t be a problem. I mean, I’ve never particularly liked Daisuke and Miyako, either, and I found Mimi a bit too brattish at the beginning of adventure 01 (but then I liked her character growth, and now I love her), but I don’t have too like every single character.
I feel like Meiko’s case is different, however, because Toei is trying to make everything about her, wasting opportunities to make other characters shine. Which wouldn’t even be that bad, hadn’t Tri been marketed with such a big hype around nostalgia and how we would get to see again our favourite characters on screen.
Instead, what happened is that the characters we care about ended up being completel sidelined in favour of this new one. She had already completely hijacked what was supposed to be Sora’s movie, and this time it was even worse. I mean, seeing what had happened in the previous movie I didn’t have much hope that Hikari woud actually have much focus, but it was still awful. And it wasn’t only that, focusing so much on Meiko prevented the writers from actually developing other scenes that could have been very impactful otherwise. For example, half of the movie was spent on Meiko whining, and in the end Taichi’s ‘death’ (of course he’s not dead people, come on…) and Ophanimon FM felt rushed, in my opinion, and they kind of fell flat. I mean, it could be the shock, but nobody seemed to show any great reaction aside from Hikari, and Daigo wasn’t even mentioned…
I think that Meiko isn’t only an annoying character, she’s basically ruining everything, in my opinion.

But I wanted to hear Takeru’s scary story...
I mean, I was looking forward the scary story scene! I was expecting everyone (or at least three characters) to tell gradually (not sure it’s the right word) scary stories but all we got was Joe making himself looking like a loser again and Meiko stealing Takeru’s spotlight with some dumb “one night someone followed me” story!

And at the beginning of the movie my biggest fear was to see Taichi and Meiko getting together
I was so innocent an hour ago…

Me watching digimon adventure as a child: there's no romance in this; close interactions only happen between two people of the same gender.
Me watching digimon adventure as a young adult: OMG that show is so gay!
