Father's Day, 2025

The early morning sky was choked with clouds and dumped a steady column of rain onto the little park. The sky crowded with lightning, as if the sun could barely find its way over the horizon. The lightning had long since stopped, but the rain continued. Green on green, this June morning, the trees looking fresh and wet, the outline of them smudged by the halo of rain caught in the leaves.

Patrick watched the storm douse the park from behind a curtain of run-off, pouring from the roof of the little picnic pavilion. The rain fell straight to the ground, filaments hanging between Patrick and his view of the gazebo at the center of the park. He was sat on a picnic table, legs swinging under him, and sipped a coffee from a paper cup. In the gazebo, a string quartet played—or rather, Patrick wasn’t sure if it could be called a ‘string quartet,’ he wasn’t sure what that meant. The piece they played felt mountainous, trills reaching above the rain, a driving pulse in the lower instruments like thick drops fallen from wet leaves.

Patrick set his coffee down, careful not to knock over the other steaming paper cup that sat beside it. Of course nobody had come today, he was amazed the musicians were even here, much less playing. A few of the committed morning walkers circled the perimeter of the park in expensive, vibrant rain jackets. Patrick watched them skipping awkwardly over the deepest puddles as a violinist plucked at his instrument. The walkers, from what Patrick could tell, each wore headphones. Not listening to the music, then. Patrick began to wonder if the musicians were there at all.

Of course nobody had come this morning. Patrick stared down at his two coffee cups for a moment, seeing the slate sky reflected in the depths of the black liquid. He sipped his own cup and stood. He reached through the curtain of rain and set the untouched coffee on the ground. The surface of the liquid immediately erupted as the heavy rain found a new vessel to fill. Already brimming with coffee, it didn’t take long for the paper cup to overrun. The musicians played on, and the rain continued to fall.

Of course nobody had come this morning. Of course.

A bunch of people in my department were writing impassioned letters to local leaders to advocate for change. Walking down the hall I heard: "Yeah, I just asked ChatGPT to write me a letter. I didn't read what it spat out because it was so long, but I told it to make the letter more emotional, then sent it without reading it." And I'm just gonna go jump into a woodchipper real quick.

January 31st

When I finished my chores, the song I'd been listening to through folding the laundry was still playing, and I sat in my favorite reading chair to let the last minute or so play.

Outside my window, on the brick stoop, the black cat lay sniffing the morning air. The cat paws at the window to get my attention, then says "It's the 31st of January. What have you done with your new year?"

And I look around at my tidy house and my made bed, my clean shower and well-stocked fridge. "I haven't done very much." My song has stopped playing by this time, and the urgency of being alive is pushing down on me so hard, I have to put the headphones away (through, truthfully, I could have stayed and listened another hour and been happier.) "Well, I have been coming to sit here day by day for five years, I've seen a lot." the cat says. "You have shelves of books--organized and neglected--which you haven't read, or haven't read again. There is so much new music all the time. There are friends you could be making." "I know," I say, because he is waiting for an answer. I can't say more than that, though. "All that is true. But I want to create with my life."

"So do that."

"I am trying. I try every day."

"But it is the 31st of January," the cat says, stretching leisurely in the sun. "That should mean something to you." "Well it doesn't." I lied. But I tried to will it to be the truth.

7. Preferred Class

Vanguard all the way! It's so not my usual play style, but at the time I started playing ME1, I was basically taking up video games as a hobby to try new things so I could get out of suicidal depression. So the choice of Vanguard was the same way: 'Might as well play as the front-line bruiser if I'm ready to off myself'. Trying new things.

Anyway, I love Vanguard. So hard in ME1 and ME2, to be so abundantly rewarded in ME3. Mmm.

22. Hammerhead: Yay or nay?

Nay. Was very excited about it because I loved the Mako sections, but now I only associate the hammerhead with my most despised parts of ME2.

77. What are you worried about for Mass Effect 4?

So I really REALLY don't want them to make a Mass Effect 4. I do not see any way of revisiting Shepard's story (or possibly even the story of the Milky Way) in a way that doesn't cheapen the trilogy and the endings--however you feel about them. So my biggest worry is that they will canonize one ending and then it'll feel awful.

91. Would you watch a live action Mass Effect movie?

I think I wouldn't be able to stay away, but I wouldn't be too enthusiastic about it, I guess? LOL. It's so tied to its format and medium that I just don't see a way of adapting the story that doesn't feel weird.

23. Favorite Mission from Mass Effect 3

The whole Citadel DLC, honestly! The time I spent playing that the first time is among my fondest video game memories. Outside of DLC, I think my favorite mission is probably the final Rannoch mission? Hard to say.

56. Who Has the Best Character Arc

Ummm, I'm gonna say Mordin Solus? He certainly has the flashiest transformation, so maybe I'm just dazzled by that. OH WAIT NO, I'm gonna say Tali. She develops a lot in ways that feel natural. You have a lot invested in her from the beginning and you really get to see her develop and thrive. I guess she gets her homeworld back, which is also a pretty flashy moment. But eh!

76. What are you hoping for Mass Effect 4?

That it is cancelled or retooled into an Andromeda sequel. I am vehemently opposed to revisiting Shepard's story.

I headcanon that Shepard is on the spectrum. I dunno, it just never occurred to me that he wasn't. Hard to say the difference between 'my Shepard' and my idea about headcanons for ALL Shepards in general. I headcanon that Shepard is actually really boring to be around? Like... countless scenes of wonder have befallen Shepard, and yet I headcanon that Shepard just... sucks at conveying stories, noting what details are interesting, and generally in thinking Shepardself as a source of entertainment.
