JOUR707 - Comfort Zone Shoot - Bai Buliruarua

I was considering going down to the Viaduct to shoot some strangers but decided to cover the welcoming of one of the new talatala’s (Pastors). I am highly uncomfortable shooting cultural custom and ceremony as I always feel like I am being disrespectful if I step on the mats or get in the way of somebody's view. I would much rather just sit in the back and observe than get right up to the front and take pictures as the proceedings take place. This was extremely stressful and took a lot for me to be to actually do.

These are our mothers from Church. They had just completed their Mothers Day service. Directing the ladies was fun as a lot of them were shy but not so shy that they wouldn’t jump in front of the camera. These were taken on an iPhone 8 as I didn’t have my camera with me.

JOUR707 - Night Shoot - Bai Buliruarua

We had a reunion down near Wellington in this random and I thought it would be a good opportunity to shoot the night shoots as I knew the proceedings would take place during the night. 

The set up was also really interesting as well, they set it up the same way that the volau (meeting place) is set up in Fiji, which I thought would make for a cool visual. I definitely struggled with this and there are a ton of photos that are fully not in focus, too dark, not exposed enough and other stuff. I did enjoy taking these photos. 

These were taken with my DSLR which could have gone really wrong considering I wasn’t too comfortable with it but I think they turned out quite well.

I hadn’t looked at these in a while so I didn’t realise they were this bad. I shot these on my iPhone SE so the quality not the greatest.

I shot these on my DSLR at Ngatos house. I tried to get as many angles and shot sizes as possible. I’m not the most comfortable with this camera but I was quite happy with these.
