The difference had to be in the power he held. As a part of the organisation, no as someone who doesn’t consider himself a part anymore but associates himself with them, Judar was the bad one. Hakuryuu must have seen him as someone dark, as someone who shared the same dark powers as his mother and he wasn’t wrong. If were able to see them, his rukh, they’re as black as they could be. The prince had chosen the light when he traveled to Sindria and came back with a djinn he didn’t bring out for him. And yet… he was starting to fall, to welcome the darkness in his heart and Judar was there to lend him a hand.
While the princess seemed to lose all ties to her beloved brother, the magi only began to understand the younger more and more. After seeing what his own past and what this so-called mother had done to his own family he understood that they both shared the same kind of hatred. And his was willing to support the poor, unfortunate prince on his way into the darkness. Not that Hakuei had to know, not now, despite her worrying so much about him.
“Yeah, heard that from Kouha and Koumei already. He’s done a great job.” Although, he would have loved to see how he did that, how twisted and full of hatred his expression must have been; he kept quiet about this, knowing that this not what the princess wanted to hear from him. The magi shrugged, then proceeded to shake his head.
“He doesn’t. I offered him to be his magi but he pushed my hand away. You know, like he always does. Still refusing to make use of what’s right in front of him. The time with the stupid king didn’t do him any good.”
Hakuei wished she hadn’t felt it but in her heart she knew she was losing Hakuryuu... the light and hope in his eyes was replaced with something darker and determined to go down a path of blood. He was slipping away from her to a place she didn’t know she could follow, the hatred in his eyes left for no debate, all her reason he had ignored when he’d selfishly asked her to join him at his side despite all the pain that would come of it.
She knew she wasn’t always right, and like Kouen, sometimes she doubted herself while they pursued this path to world conquest because more often than not the price was high and blood had to be spilled, a hypocrite in and of herself at times despite the end being righteous and worthy in her eyes. Hakuryuu had killed without mercy in the plains, not only breaking their spirits, but their swords and bodies. With every strike and with his actions after, rushing them home for the Emperor’s funeral, he had his mind set on the capital, not the conquest.
Now she saw why.
“Ah, forgive me.... I thought there was a chance he’d changed his mind,” She apologized, feeling as if that strong change in him would lead to something.... him reaching out to another person because the first princess had been unable to tell him what he wanted and promise her support. Normally she would in a heartbeat, but not for this, not when she knew what he intended.
For Judar though... most of his candidates were aware of his nature and that was one bent on chaos no matter the harm that would come with it. He enjoyed the invasion and bloodshed, and Hakuei had no doubt that if given the chance, the magi of the Kou Empire would at least hear him out and be happy for it. She wasn’t so blind as to notice that he had some changes of his own. It was dangerous and she knew she probably shouldn’t be saying this... she didn’t know how intertwined Judar’s alliances were with her mother, knowing she had been the one to bring him home with her to Kou all those years ago when he was a young child but still she needed to try to know the truth or at least perhaps a slip in character for the oracle.
“But you’re saying you would join him if he asked.... how far would you go for his cause, if he let you in, Lord Magi?”

Paimon props her elbow on her knee, her chin in her palm and watches Hakuei intently. She’s so spirited, so quick to defend and desperate to understand. Maybe if she had seen everything Aladdin had shown them instead of getting the recaps from that Kouen of hers she’d understand better.
“Did we? Hmm, I wonder.” she hums thoughtfully, pursing her lips. “It’s the role of a leader to take responsibility of their people. We djinn, we the seventy-two species of Alma Toran failed that role. When our people were ravaged by Elder David and his magicians, we were saved by Lord Solomon and his resistance. And afterwards, we didn’t take responsibility for what had happened. Many of us were scared. So we hid behind the humans, let them fight in our stead. We pushed Solomon to become King and he pushed further to become god, all for our sake. And when he was gone, we fell to ruin. We failed to stand on our own, forgot ourselves and our own power. And that’s what tore the world apart, long before the magicians did.” Paimon smiles sourly, more serious than she’s ever appeared.
“My years? How ancient I must seem when I certainly don’t feel it~ I hope I don’t look it either.” she tries to joke again but it falls a bit flat. Especially when she’s felt every hundred years she’s been alive. “Well, that was our decision; to live like this. If we were unable to save our world, we could at least help to nurture yours. And someone had to stay behind, if only to remember those we had lost. We were to ensure the tragedy of Alma Toran never happens again. True, there are some days, some years when this choice hurts, when I long to rejoin my people, where their souls ride the wind. But I have never regretted it. And besides, I got to meet you, after all and have seen many wonderful things through your eyes.”
Paimon sits up straight then. She unfolds her legs, lets her feet touch the ground. “But I suppose our meeting wasn’t entirely truthful. At least not my introduction, glorious as it was. So let me remedy that.”
Paimon closes her eyes and the wind swirls around her briefly. She changes forms one last time. The last remaining vestiges of her djinn form disappear; the exaggerated features, the colors, the outfit. Everything falls from her and is replaced by an older image, one she remembers well. She stands before Hakuei, long black hair topped with a golden headpiece, adorned with red jewels, matched by her broad necklace and arm and ankle bands. She wears a golden bodice, a flowing skirt, decorated at the belt with feathers and charms. And holds a feathered staff, identical in all but color to one Hakuei’s equip wields.
By the end of it, she smiles.
“I am Paimon, ninth djinn created by Solomon, the avatar of maniacal love and chaos, daughter of Rambha, and Matriarch of the Apsara tribe. Ask me anything, and you will be answered.”
Hakuei sucks in a deep breath, obviously aware of that fact... that it was up to the leaders to guide and protect their people, organize themselves in a way that would benefit them. However, her time at the Northern Plains made it abundantly clear that sometimes misfortunes happen and a people can grow weaker and weaker even from the strongest nation in the world. In some ways the people of Tenzen were like Paimon’s tribe and the others... withered away by constant attack before they were brought under protection of a stronger ally: Kou or in their case, the magicians.
The comparison ate at her and made it so that she couldn’t accept such words of guilt and blame. “Your people had been lead to believe before that point that humans were superior... even if King Solomon pushed for equality, that never comes as quickly as we would like, and the mental scars of feeling inferior would remain. If indeed you meant it when you said that it’s our leaders job to take care of their people, then surly it falls to the King as well? Of course he too couldn’t be to blame for the traitors actions.”
Still the serious way Paimon spoke was unlike anything Hakuei had ever heard from her before, normally so spirited and light-hearted, teasing her and making her feel at ease. Though she sought to give her djinn peace of mind, at the end of the day she knew she would always lack the same understanding since she wasn’t there, nor had she even attended the summit. She was blind to the tragedies of the past.
The brilliance of her djinn does not escape her, taking her breath away the moment she transformed into her former self, something she’d only ever been allowed short glimpses of over the span of the years they’d been together. Despite knowing she had never been a human, she looks more like it now than ever, majestic in splendor shining with a rich culture and history that was lost to time, with the being in front of her being it’s last memory.
Even though Paimon spoke kindly of her as she always had, making her feel worthy of the gift she’d been given, the dungeon she’d conquered, the new perspective on her was jarring. She felt great shame in being unable to relate but the idea of something beyond the single-handed purpose Paimon had now, an entire life and tribe gone now leaving only her... and her solemn duty was to choose someone like Hakuei and grant her power to change the world in the general’s own favor.
“I’m not sure I feel worthy of the power of the Apsara tribe.... your people... Surly the magi’s guidance would have been enough rather than your eternal existence watching life grow and fade in a never-ending cycle. It feels far too cruel, Paimon, your existence to try to repent of your sins. Especially when all this time we’ve been seeing the rise of too many metal vessels as irregularities that are bringing chaos to the world... I’ve been fighting to stop that without even knowing how djinn came to be,”

“Mhn. It’s very different, but I think different can be a good thing, don’t you?” It felt like the world was new in a way, and it made it exciting. Not that he didn’t like how it was before, but.. there were so many problems. So many things that separated people. Well, he could think about that later. For now, he would enjoy the time he had with the woman in front of him.
The pat on his head was appreciated, earning a smile from the younger boy; he was grateful for the affection. Since he’d grown, people seemed to give him more space than he really cared for. Their reluctance to be affectionate made him a bit sad. Just because he got bigger, that didn’t mean he hated being close to people!
“I don’t think I’ll get that big, but I guess it’s something I can aim for, right? I want to be able to lift a boulder like Mor does.” Not that it would happen, not with such little strength. He may as well be a noodle compared to her.
“You don’t have to thank me for that, Miss Hakuei, you deserve to live your life the way you want to; what happened wasn’t your choice, it wasn’t fair.” Aladdin corrects her gently, shaking his head. “You don’t owe me anything.”
“It can be very good, of course.” She nodded, of course fond of the traditions back home but with a goal like Hakuei’s, she wasn’t naive enough to hope the world would always stay the same and her country wasn’t any exception to that change. It felt good after all the conflict to finally come together for something, but then again she was told the world was peaceful for those two years she was gone... but to her the harmony was fresh.
Hakuei shook her head, admitting the strength of the fanalis were far superior to anything the rest of them could do, therefore their help was the most immeasurable in all of this. “Perhaps not, but I’m certain you’ll continue to grow into a fine young man. With all the work there is to do around here, we’ll all become stronger.”
The last thing he spoke of made her heart heavy, eager to finally speak to him and say her peace yet he rejected it in the sort of humble manner she halfway expected from the young man.
“Some people don’t always have that choice Aladdin, that’s why it’s important we have good people like you to help and insure the safety of those around them.” She insisted, resting a hand on top of his shoulder with a sincere look, “Take my thanks not as a reward, but as encouragement for your future endeavors. My wholehearted gratitude is something I want you to have because it’s the only thing I can give for the only person who was capable of stopping my mother.”

Now if Hóngyán had come to one of his little sisters with such a massive and quite brutish prize, they would have surly shuttered and been alarmed, being such delicate and refined princesses who fit the stereotype of a dainty noble lady. However, Báiyīng was far from that type ever since she had taken up the sword and now always searched for more practical means even if she was admittedly surprised to see it and he most likely interpreted that as distaste.
The first princess quickly corrected her mistake, waving off his initial impression and giving him a meaningful smile.
“No, I love it.... the winds of the north can sometimes be unbearable so I was looking for something to keep me warm while away from home. How very generous of you, Lord Hóngyán,” She beamed, picking up the pelt using both arms and holding it close to her with ease while the soft fur brushed against her neck.

@yanbawang GOT ME THINKIN ABOUT HAKUEI, KOUEN, AND aLL THAT GREAT POLITICAL STUFF SO nOW I’M GONNA POST ABOUT IT TO CLEAR UP HAKUEI’S PERSPECTIVE, EVEN THOUGH I AM NOT AN EXCELLENT HISTORY PERSON LIKE THEY ARE, I’M A MANGA EXPERT AND IF IT’S IN THERE I CAN ALMOST ALWAYS FIND AND TALK ABOUT IT, AYE.
Let’s not forget Hakuei’s goals are in line with Kou taking over the world.
Hakuei’s vision of the future is more or less matching with Kouen’s except wanting to do it less by military strength and more with negotiation and sharing a vision of the future. It’s idealistic to always expect people to accept new leadership of course, but she always tries to handle it that way first because she believes in people. She recognizes the chaos of more and more king’s vessels that result in war.
She will ultimately make war if need be but in her view it’s all for the sake of eventually ending war all together. And you might ask… why does she feel this way? She says the reason twice throughout canon.
From her father’s experience is where she draws this wisdom, that’s why she tries to negotiate because her father was ‘severe’ when taking over Tenka and she believes that’s why they assassinated him. Maybe if her father had taken her method and tried to lead with an ideal first instead of a battle, he would be alive today.
Kouen feels mostly the same from when he talks about it:
(First of all ‘i don’t know if my intentions are right’ YOU GOTTA BE A REAL HUMBLE PERSON TO SAY THAT AS THE ANTICIPATED NEXT EMPEROR OF ONE OF THE GREAT WORLD POWERHOUSES)
Kouen literally just talked to Hakuei and Hakuryuu about that the day before Hakuryuu reveals privately to his sister that he wants to start a civil war and take back the country…. What baffles me about that is Hakuryuu heard what Kouen had to say and I guess had cotton stuffed in his ears or didn’t notice nor care that Hakuei agreed wholeheartedly with him in going for something bigger than Kou. Why the hell he expected her to pack her bags and bail on that is beyond me…
It might have a smidge bit of sexism that he did it, expecting her just to be led like she hasn’t lived as a general for the past year or however long… you can kinda see that in the way he’s like ‘I’ll protect you’ all the time
So you have to understand… by accepting Hakuryuu’s idea at the time, she would have been betraying her own ideals and years of her finding her own path and way to live. Hakuei didn’t betray Hakuryuu because to go along with his plan she would have had to say and believe that everything she thought was right, her whole way of living, and everything she’s done up until this point was wrong and pointless.
EVEN STILL, SHE DIDN’T OUTRIGHT REJECT HIM BECAUSE SHE CARES FOR HIM THAT MUCH.
They just had two completely different views on what was right, exact opposites. Hakuryuu believed, “Hatred will never be erased, the only thing you can do is erase the ones you hate,” while Hakuei believed in setting your differences aside for the good of a united future like when her brothers died she stood back and bowed down to new leadership of Kou for the greater good, believing others could do the same. Her view is more naïve while Hakuryuu’s is more pessimistic, probably needing some kind of middle ground between them if they were to get anywhere. (thus Kouen… in a sense…)
I kind of jumped around but the point of this post is to give insight to how Hakuei feels and why she couldn’t join Hakuryuu at that time. How could she have been expected to when he never gave her any insight to what he was feeling all this time under the guise of ‘protecting her’? Why would Hakuei turn her back on Kouen who had the exact same picture of the future to achieve as she did in comparison to taking her brothers hand and declaring war on him… the war she constantly claims to want to put an end to, the wars she believed killed her father back then to have history repeat itself?
A house against itself cannot stand is her mentality. If her own family couldn’t put aside their differences then how could they expect the world to do the same? Yes maybe she’s giving her mother way too much credit if that is what she believes but what Hakuryuu wanted was to just join Hakuei’s side and make everyone else in Kou their enemy, including Kouen and all his siblings who didn’t do anything wrong. Kouen shows that same sort of humility and self reflection after the timeskip when he admits he would hand the throne over to Koumei once the world was united because he was better suited at military advancements.
So this is sort of why Hakuei gets along so well with Kouen, why her joining Hakuryuu would not have happened, and generally her mindset on the world.

There was little she’d be able to hide, connected as they were. Paimon had seen the depths of Hakuei’s heart, watching her fighting in her dungeon. It’s what made Paimon choose her. And after that, she’d spent every moment watching Hakuei grow from challenger to conqueror to chosen king. Hakuei’s fighting spirit, her determination and pride, her compassion and mercy; Paimon loved it all. So when she saw Hakuei looking troubled, she had to come.
Paimon skirted around the side of her, trailing one hand on her waist before releasing her. She came to float in front of Hakuei, folding her legs in the air. When she visited Hakuei, she altered her size to one better suited for talking, standing at the same height she’d been long before. And normally, she kept up the blue features of her djinn equip and everything that came with it. But sometimes when she was alone with Hakuei, she let even that fall away. And in this moment, she did as well. She appeared before her just as she had in Alma Toran; black hair and violet eyes. Since she’s only an apparition in this world, it was easy enough to change.
“So that’s what your’re thinking after~” Paimon hums, hovering in front of her. “Ah well, you needn’t be so heavy-hearted about it all. Even if you had asked, there is little I would have told you. It’s the law of the djinn that we were not to speak of the past to the new world; something we all agreed upon together. We thought a fresh start, free of our sins would be best for the new world. But it seems our mistakes haunt you still.” She purses her lips before shrugging it off.
“But I suppose now that Aladdin has shared the truth with you all, our pact of silence is meaningless. So if your heart is full of questions, ask and be answered. If it’s you, I’ll tell even my darkest secrets~” she laughs a little at the end.
Though she always appreciated Paimon’s optimism and light-hearted tone, in this case it just concerned her all the more. She was thankful at least that she didn’t bear the responsibility of acquiring about the truth about the past, honestly never directly inquiring but understanding when Paimon tensed on such topics and gave her a smile before shifting the direction of the conversation. That had always guided Hakuei away from the subject, but now she was right: there was no more hiding.
“What sins do you speak of? Your people fought to protect the world... you did everything you could with your power.” The princess insisted, eyes locking with the purple ones of her djinn. “You didn’t succeed, but to take that blame upon yourself... all of you... I cannot understand that.”
Hakuei was clearly questioning all of it but to hear talk of sins and past mistakes didn’t make any sense to her. Perhaps she didn’t know everything since she merely had a brief from Lord Kouen and the others there at the summit but nothing they said indicated any fault of the races of Alma Torran and instead implicated the magicians in treachery.
“I would never force you to reveal anything... your years and pain outnumbers my troubles to a severe degree,” She sighed, knowing Paimon was trying to make a joke but the tragedy of that world was still fresh in her mind, “The choosing of King’s... coming to such a strange purpose after a normal existence and being content with that: it’s what I fail to truly grasp. Your connection to this world, and how you’ve managed to accept it.”

Ah, look who’s there! Judar’s lips curled into a smile as he turned to face the princess - the sister of his very own soon to be king candidate. This didn’t suit her at all, this worried expression clashed with the kindness in her voice. Though, the Magi wasn’t one to comment on this when he was about to lie to her. What were they talking about? Many things. The kind of things a sister wasn’t supposed to know. And yet he wondered how she would react if he were to tell her nothing but the truth.
“I congratulated him. He got himself Zagan, isn’t that great?” Judar chuckled, showing her faked happy expression. After all, the prince had conquered a dungeon without his help, a dungeon which wasn’t raised by him.
“Hakuryuu is strong. I wish I could have raised that dungeon for him but he always refused to accept my help. Had me a little disappointed but at least he got a great djinn, huh? You should be proud of him!”
“Is that so...” She murmured, head tilting down as she solemnly pondered their Magi’s words. It wasn’t as if Hakuei was unaware of his and Hakuryuu’s relationships: since they were young Judar had always approached her little brother and in recent years he’d constantly pestered him over getting a dungeon to which he always refused. That reasoning was beyond her as well since he would never explain why he rejected that power... yet acquired it now.
Unfortunately, she was starting to understand why after Hakuryuu revealed what he knew about their mother. Therefore, he and Judar speaking now concerned her more than it ever had, hinting at some kind of secret that the two might be keeping from her or an agreement they shared. Hakuei only worried for that because she could barely even recognize her little brother anymore with such hatred in his eyes, and feared him doing something drastic once again without her as he had with the dungeon conquering.
“I am proud of him. He subjugated the the resistance factions of the Tenzan Plains with brutal ferocity and speed using it’s power. Zagan is strong... and Hakuryuu has changed.” She almost wished she didn’t know the reason why but now that she did, she had to try to understand him and Judar could be the key to that.
“Please don’t take me for a fool. Is he putting his trust in you?”

Aladdin’s arms wrapped around her tightly, and with a strength he didn’t have as a young boy; his head gently resting on hers until they parted their embrace. And when they did so, he set his hands on his hips, and smiled proudly.
“It’s odd to see how the world can change, isn’t it? I know it must be hard on you, there’s so much you have to learn, and accept. But I’ll be here, so if you need anything, just let me know, okay?”
A hand places itself against his chest.
“Me? I’ve been doing quite nicely as of late, though it has been pretty busy. But what do you think, Miss Hakuei? I grew a bunch, are you surprised? Do I look super handsome now?” Like a little peacock, Aladdin poses for her, as if he were trying to impress her with how much he’d matured.
“It’s amazingly different, quite like a world from a fantasy book now,” That was an understatement if there had ever been one. Everyone had obviously been shocked by the bizarre geographical difference and destruction not to mention the sudden shift from a fully developed world back to sharing food and aid with every corner of the world but for Hakuei it had changed even more.
On one hand, her dream of uniting the world had come true in a way but only for now until the rebuilding process was complete. However, she was certain that since they had all fought together for the survival of their homes, they would be capable of reaching an understanding; not to mention her concern over too many metal vessels now eliminated as an issue.
She chuckles wholeheartedly, placing a hand on his head and patting it fondly quite like an adoring older sister despite the now closed height gap.
“Yes yes of course, from all that heavy lifting you’ve gotten so muscular and big, one day you’ll be as strong and tall as Ugo was,” She beamed, never quite losing the impression that the djinn had left on her as one of the few times her life was saved. Ironically, both by Aladdin’s hands.
“I wanted to thank you as well for what you did for me. Hakuryuu told me that it was you who brought me back. You’ve grown so splendidly and once again I owe you my life,”

If one was to ask about the demeanor of the first princess, everyone who knew of her would easily claim she was even-tempered and frequented a smile, hardly letting her emotions get the best of her unless when it was absolutely necessary. When she felt that slipping, she would always take a moment in private to gather herself, rarely allowing anyone to take a glimpse of her doubt or discouragement before she could talk herself into positivity once again.
Because of this habit, there was one being who had the ability to see this side of her most of all because she was always at her side: her djinn who had been with her since the start of her rise in the ranks and responsibilities, to bid farewell to the folly’s of youth and instead embracing her family’s dream. At first it was embarrassing that Paimon could always see this side of her but she’d been unable to help be grateful for the fondness she held for her king and subject of her choosing.
The djinn, in typical fashion, embraced her like it was the most natural thing in the world; like a gentle breeze surrounding her that was comforting in times of peace and the strongest weapon when she had to draw her sword. She was thankful for their relationship being this way as other kings vessels didn’t seem to share that sentiment from what she understood.
“I can’t help it after hearing what Lord Kouen and the others saw at the summit. The former world... your former world...” Hakuei let out a small sigh and turned back, sky blue eyes catching hers, “I wish I had been able to see for myself, and I do feel guilt for never asking you. Maybe we all could have known these things and how the metal vessels came to be sooner.”

She had to admit that she felt a bit strange since her awakening because it had come at a dire time. While everyone else had grown and changed, for her it was as if she fell asleep one day and woke up two years later. It was hard for her to process, not even that long ago being filled in by the state of things but it was impossible for her to not recognize Aladdin with those wide blue eyes and cheerful grin.
The outstretched arms made a smile spread on her face, lighting it up in relief like being able to release a breath she didn’t even know she’d been holding. The gesture felt so normal which was something she wasn’t used to with everyone around her rather awkward about everything that had happened to her and after a while it made even someone as easygoing as Hakuei uncomfortable having to ask so many questions or the worst of it which was them not knowing about her possession.
Though it was hardly customary to hug as a greeting in her country and bypassed her formal training, she didn’t hesitate to reach out to him like he was her own little brother, giving him a tight squeeze and a pat on the back.
“I've been well, thank you. How have you fared? I’ve heard you’ve been very busy with the new world customs... it’s no wonder I haven’t seen you since the battle.”

#OOC#maybe i just hit a hot spot during my revival of the blog but...#it looks like that's fizzled out#i'm glad the sinbad's keepin it real but i feel like they're so popular i shouldn't expect them to like shoulder every interaction i wanna d#o#i just wish i could make a multimuse functional but no lie: once you have one activity slows down big time#unless you have some close friends to rp with#wHICH I DONT CAUSE MY GF HATES MULTIMUSES#sorry for the rant#i wanted to be active here again but it looks like that's just not going to happen without any... yk; active blogs#just too hard#thanks for your patience if you do continue to follow me i will be back

Ohtaka’s Backstage vol.301:
“Hakuei is a military commander, and so her entire body is covered in scars (or was).
This week, the Kou Company mini arc is reaching its climax, don’t miss it!
Moreover, the new Magi volume will be out a little early than usual and it’s going to be on the 12th (Tuesday). The Serendine artwork from last week’s backstage is going to be the special paper. There’s also a limited edition that comes with three badges.”
