Grimme Award Special for Mina-Giselle Rüffer for her outstanding performance as „Nora“ in DRUCK – Season 5
Reasons given by the jury
"DRUCK" is one of the most remarkable youth TV phenomena of recent years and continuously ensures high narrative quality as well as frenetic popularity from the young target group. In its fifth season, the format starts with a new generation of young people. The focus is on Nora Machwitz, about whom the entire season revolves. In order to master this challenge convincingly, a special acting performance is required; pure immersion in the group is not possible in view of the numerous intense solo scenes.
With Mina-Giselle Rüffer, “DRUCK” has found the perfect line-up. She fully exploits the potential of her complex role. One moment young and fragile, the next grown up and serene again, she shows an enormous versatility. What defines the specific requirement for the role is the clinical picture of dissociation and depersonalization. At the beginning of the season, there are short scenes that could indicate symptoms of depression or post-traumatic stress disorder. The further the story goes the clearer it becomes that Nora suffers from the pathological state of self-alienation, which is associated with emotional numbness and the feeling of permanent “standing beside yourself”.
As elusive as this psychological disorder may be in real life, the hurdle to make it tangible for third parties with the means of acting is all the more difficult. Rüffer succeeds in doing this by bringing a permeability into her portrayal that is very intuitive and not only lets the series audience get close, but also lets them feel into it. This makes it possible to understand how it must feel when she says she is in a sort of glass ball, all life around her is played out far away, she experiences close contacts as if from a distance. The worry of being considered crazy by others and therefore not being able to confide in even close friends is part of Rüffer's intense game. Last but not least, it offers those affected and their relatives a serious catalyst for conveying understanding.
It would of course be too short-sighted to reduce her performance over the entire season to the dissociations of the character. In the interplay with her boyfriend and sisters, a strong awareness of timing and rhythm becomes clear in several scenes, which not all actors in the series show to the same degree. With the sensations of a teenager that appears authentic, Rüffer provides high identification potential for the "DRUCK" target group.
