i’m surprised i haven’t seen more people consider javi being the one who knows the hardings.

javi has the most knowledge of (and respect for) the dorothy tech out of the twisters cast; hell, he even names the stormPAR units after wizard of oz characters. and he has the most interest in carrying on the hardings’ work of demystifying tornadoes. the fact that he even got his hands on dorothy makes it possible that he’s at least acquainted with the hardings.

like. consider bright-eyed college kid javi going out to the harding residence, nervous because these two are really protective of dorothy and he needs to impress them. only to find that their idea of a test of character is a stormchase in a truck that smells like armpit and a round of porch beers. and then the hardings are ride-or-die for this random kid from miami forever. they probably celebrated when javi called em to say he broke ties with riggs, because they were worried javi was selling his soul after his friends were killed. i need it okay.

i’m not mad at all about the kiss being cut, tbh. the standout thing to me about tyler & kate is that attraction isn't what pushes them together, it's respect. the attraction was there from the start -- but they spend the runtime going from thinking of each other as the lost causes of their trade to recognizing each other as knowledgeable, dedicated peers, and it makes the interest in each other all the stronger. and i feel like them rushing off to chase another storm says way more about where they're headed than a kiss would.

the scene where Kate and Tyler just so happen to be talking about exactly the same “we don’t know how a tornado forms” concept in separate cars, and the scene is cutting between them as they basically finish each others’ sentences—

I read an article about how there was a backlash to “Twisters” cutting out the kiss scene between Tyler and Kate. While I get the backlash, especially since it was extremely obvious the movie was going for romance with those characters, I feel like the backlash is a sign that the movie was a success. I mean, this just shows that people are invested in the story and characters. If I was the studio, I’d feel at ease hearing about a backlash since that means there’s an incentive to make a Twister 3.

have we considered the hilarity of kate becoming a Livestream Cryptid Gf™ yet. Like I think she’d be on occasional Tornado Wrangler videos & cameo on streams & such, but mostly if there’s an update she’s excited to share.

can't stop thinking about kate, eyes clenched shut and holding on for dear life as a tornado passed through, with tyler's arms wrapped around her and the reassurances from the child's mother echoing i got you i got you i got you. not only was she caught in a tornado twice but the circumstances were so fucking similar to the incident that killed her dreams and her friends, it's insane. kate, eyes shut and desperation growing as she waited and waited and waited for tyler to be ripped away from her like jeb was.

One of my favorite parts of “Twisters” is the misdirect with Tyler Owens’ character. Because at the start of the movie, he’s introduced as a douchebag YouTuber whose videos are vlogs in which he and his crew get into dangerous situations. But then when our protagonist Kate gets to know him, we learn that Tyler is actually:

1) a really sweet, humble dude who is looking out for all his friends

2) the smartest dumb guy you’ll ever meet. He has a degree in meteorology, but he does dumb things like drive into a tornado.

3) jumps into danger because he “feels” it / he’s attracted to the danger / wants to see if he can handle the danger

So in a weird way, he’s introduced as Cowboy Logan Paul, only for it to be revealed he’s more like Cowboy Markiplier. And let me just say, as soon as I compared him to Mark in the theater, I couldn’t unsee it lol.

My family saw Twisters last night and my youngest sister felt very strongly about the Tornado Wranglers YouTube channel and I woke up to this letterboxd review from her

twisters headcanon that as Kate is in New York wrapping up her life to come back home to Oklahoma, a dangerous storm cell is forming near Sapulpa and she texts Tyler her unease about it with her mom being there alone.

Tyler tells her not to worry and then about five hours later, texts her a selfie of himself with his legs kicked up on her dining room table and Kathy in view serving him some BBQ with a grin on her face.

Kate, shocked: did you drive from Little Rock?

Tyler, nonplussed: you didn't want her to be alone and I wanted to check on my most prized possession: she's using my t-shirt as a rag to wipe the windows with by the way.

I really adore the casually prioritized importance of friendships in the new Twisters movie. Like obviously there were sparks of romance that i thoroughly enjoyed but the point is that that was never the point. The way that Javi and Kate took care of each other and looked out for each other even when they were fighting. The way the whole tornado wranglers crew acted like family and welcomed Kate right in. The way Tyler was genuinely interested in getting to know Kate and working together with her. There was no big fight between Javi and Tyler over Kate or anybody else. Kate spent the whole movie processing a lot of trauma and was able to be supported by the friends surrounding her instead of having all of her interactions stopped up with an intense budding romance. I just really love it when friendship and people are the most important things.
