A Baldur's Gate portrait inspired by the style of the Disco Elysium portraits. She looks away from the light, maybe because she is taught to do so, maybe because she feels like she does not deserve it. Talking to her is difficult, most of her memory is blank, as if she misses parts of herself.

"the problem with what cazador has done is that he did it to me"--trying to articulate why i like this quote so much. bc really, when you get into it, this is astarion saying that there was nothing inherently wrong with what cazador did to him.

the thing about astarion is that he rejects ideas of right-and-wrong and "deserving" bc if he accepted those ideas, as someone who's had to adopt cazador's worldview to survive, everything becomes extremely bleak. he's weak and powerless so he deserves unending torture. it's right for cazador to torture him because he's powerful and he can. that is unbearable.

so instead he rejects the premise altogether and has self-interest as his only (conscious) guiding principle. it doesn't matter what I deserve, because I take what I want anyways! I don't care about right-and-wrong, I only care about what I want! I am the only person who matters in this world and that itself is my moral code.

which is, of course, terrible. and he needs to learn that cazador... is actually a bad person. what was done to him was objectively wrong, and cazador actually truly did not have a right to torture him just because he could. and it would be wrong to do it to anyone else, no matter how weak they may be. there can be, in fact, a middle ground between no-holds-barred selfishness and complete debasement; there is a space for him within a more compassionate worldview.
